IMPORTANT NOTICES

1. The Remove-IT version 2 that is on this disk is
designed to run in Windows 3.1. Its Upgrade Assistant
will run in Windows 95, but only if you installed
and ran it first in Windows 3.1. This disk will not
install in Windows 95. If you no longer have Windows
3.1 on your system, use the Remove-IT for Windows 95
disks that came with this product to install Remove-IT
    in Windows 95.

2. If you are upgrading from Remove-IT 1, your Log-IT
installation records, Remove-IT backups and file
information table (REMOVEIT.CRT) are not compatible
with Remove-IT 2. See the User's Guide Addenda below
for information on using the Remove-IT 1 Converter
utility to convert these to Remove-IT 2 format.

3. If you have a 540 MB or larger IDE hard drive that has
been partitioned with Ontrack Computer Systems' Disk
Manager software, do not use the Remove-IT emergency
recovery diskette to boot your system. Doing so may
result in loss of data. For more information, please
read the "Problems with Drives" section in the
    TROUBLE.WRI file.

4. The file and application usage information in Watch-IT
may not be accurate under the following circumstances:

    - If less than 30 days have elapsed from the day
you installed Remove-IT and if you haven't
transferred existing file usage information from
      Remove-IT 1.

    - If you have not loaded the Smart Disk Custodian,
and let it complete 100% of its file scan. The
Disk Custodian icon at the bottom of your desktop
indicates if less than 100% of the files have
      been scanned.

    - If you do not load the Smart Disk Custodian when
      you run Windows.

For troubleshooting information, tips on using Remove-IT,
and how to contact Vertisoft Technical Support, please
view the TROUBLE.WRI file which is located on the
Remove-IT floppy Disk used to install Remove-IT. The
TROUBLE.WRI is a Windows Write file. Instructions for
viewing and printing this file can be found in Appendix B
of the User Guide.

                   USER'S GUIDE ADDENDA

General

1. This is a single-user version of Remove-IT. You may
install it on a network drive, but it is not licensed
for multi-user access with two exceptions. Its Smart
Fingerprint utility and its Install-IT utility may be
accessed by multiple users. To inquire about
multi-user products and licensing, call Vertisoft
    Systems at 803-295-2623.

2. In Find-IT or Watch-IT, if the number of files to be
displayed in the list box exceeds 8,000, a dialog box
with the message "Too Many Files" is displayed.
Windows cannot display more than 8,000 files in a list
box; however, it is safe to continue working. The
"extra" files will simply not be displayed in the list
box. Since it is extremely inconvenient to work with
such a great number of files at a time, we recommend
you use the Drives to Search and Files to Search
options to limit the set of files being analyzed.

Installation

1. During Setup, Remove-IT 2 will install a current
version of the file CTL3DV2.DLL in the Windows\System
directory. Any older versions of this file will be
renamed CTL3DV2.RT. The version that Remove-IT
installs is backward compatible with any applications
using the older or previous version of CTL3DV2.DLL. If
a message is displayed indicating that this file
cannot be copied or updated because active
applications are currently using CTL3DV2.DLL, you must
exit SETUP and disable these applications before
attempting to reinstall Remove-IT. Known examples are
Microsoft Office, Toolbar, and CyberMedia's First Aid
for Windows, but there are other applications that may
access this file. Please review the instructions that
have been included on a separate insert for a more
    detailed description of this issue.

Reinstall-IT

1. If you are using Reinstall-IT or the standalone
    Install-IT program (added by Transfer-IT to a
self-installing archive) to install an upgrade for an
existing application, the application's program icons
may be duplicated. This occurs in an Express Install
or if the Replace Files and Icons option is not set to
All Files and Icons. You can change the Replace Files
and Icons option to All Files and Icons, or you can
simply select the duplicate icons in the program group
and press the Delete key to remove them.

Recover-IT

1. Recover-IT will not work with floppy disks that have
been compressed using DoubleSpace, DriveSpace or
Stacker. If you attempt to use a floppy disk that has
a Compressed Volume File (CVF) on it (e.g.
    dblspace.000, drvspace.000, Stacvol.dsk), The result
will be the following error message: "Error on Disk
A:" This is due to the fact that a floppy disk with a
CVF cannot be formatted. You must first remove the CVF
file before these disks can be formatted under DOS or
Windows. Consult your disk compression program's
documentation for instructions on how to remove the
CVF and format floppy disks that have been compressed.

2. Recover-IT formats and supports the creation of
emergency recovery disks on both low and high density
disks. If you receive a "Track 0 Bad" error message
this may be due to one of two possible causes: You
have selected a format option for the wrong type of
disk, or the disk is defective. First, check the disk
type (high or low density) and then make sure that you
select the correct format option. If you are certain
that the selection and disk type are correct, then try
    another diskette.

Upgrade Assistant for Windows 95

1. The Upgrade Assistant is documented in a separate
User's Guide that is enclosed with Remove-IT 2.

2. When you run the Upgrade Assistant in Windows 3.1, it
will inventory your DOS system files after it
inventories your Windows system files. Then if you
install Windows 95 in a separate directory from
Windows 3.1 and run the Upgrade Assistant in Windows
95, it will offer to remove your old DOS system files.
Windows 95 installs a new version of DOS, so you can
remove your previous version of DOS and still run DOS
applications and Windows 3.1. Note: The Windows 95
Setup program only deletes a very few of the files
from your previous version of DOS. By removing the
remaining files with the Upgrade Assistant, you will
save yourself several megabytes of disk space.

3. After the Upgrade Assistant transfers your program
items and groups from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, event
sounds in the applications you transfer may not play.

                WHAT'S NEW IN REMOVE-IT 2

New! Network Support - lets you remove files and
applications, from those network drives and directories
where you have access privileges. Remove-IT's Smart
Fingerprint can stay behind to delete portions of removed
applications from other PCs on the network.

New! Installation Knowledge-Base - an encyclopedia of over
850 popular DOS and Windows application installations,
such as WordPerfect, dBASE, Lotus 1-2-3, etc.. The
Knowledge-Base lets Remove-IT provide the most accurate
and complete removal of previously installed applications
of any application removal utility.

New! Cleanup Coach - expertly guides you through cleaning
unneeded files off your hard drive.

New! Smart Disk Custodian - keeps your drive clean by
alerting you to new unneeded and unused applications and
files that can be removed.

New! Transfer-IT - quickly creates a compressed,
self-installing backup that you can use to easily transfer
your applications to your home PC, laptop, or other
licensed computers without disrupting their existing
configuration files. Remove-IT is not required on the
destination PCs to install the backup.

New! Store-IT - quickly creates a compressed active
archive of infrequently used applications on your hard
drive, but it leaves the program icon in your Windows
Program Manager or equivalent. To run the active archive,
simply click the program icon.

New! Upgrade Assistant for Windows 95

      - Pre-Installation Clean-Up - removes unneeded
items to make room for Windows 95 and reduce
the chance of an upgrade problem.

      - Windows 95 Configuration - if installing
Windows 95, but keeping Windows 3.1, the
        Upgrade Assistant automatically configures your
Windows 3.1 applications into Windows 95 so you
don't have to manually reinstall them. Or if
you use Norton Desktop, PC Tools, or Dashboard
and install Windows 95 over Windows 3.1, the
        Upgrade Assistant will automatically transfer
your Windows 3.1 program groups into Windows 95
so you don't have to recreate your program
        items and groups.

      - Post-Installation Clean-Up - removes Windows
3.1 and/or the leftover remains of previous
Windows installations. Also removes your old
version of MS-DOS (which the Windows 95 Setup
        program does not do thoroughly).

Enhanced! Clean-IT - now lets you delete and view unneeded
backup files, clip art, help files, screen savers, temp
files, sound files, movie files, and more in addition to
fonts, drivers, system support files, etc.

Enhanced! Find-IT - new sort options make it easier than
ever to identify unneeded files.

Enhanced! Log-IT - now lets you deselect and/or add to the
application items for the application you chose to remove.
You can also create a manual log record of changes you
make to your system.

Enhanced! Watch-IT - now monitors application usage so you
can see which infrequently used files and applications can
be deleted or archived.

Enhanced! Reinstall-IT - new options for changing the
destination drive, directory, and program group.

Enhanced! Recover-IT - now supports multi-configuration
boot files.

Enhanced! Report-IT - new Remove-IT Functions report lists
items found by Remove-IT, Clean-IT, Find-IT, and Watch-It.

Enhanced! File Viewer - in addition to being able to view
ASCII, Hex, and font files, Remove-IT's file viewer now
lets you view ZIP, PCX, BMP, TGA, and AVI files, and hear
WAV and MID files.

               OPERATING WITH WINDOWS 95

Remove-IT's Upgrade Assistant for Windows 95 is a Windows
95 compatible application. You should use this utility to
assist in upgrading from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. This
utility will only operate if you have not yet installed
Windows 95, or if you currently have both Windows 3.1 and
Windows 95 active (dual boot setup) on the same system. In
either case, you must first run the Upgrade Assistant in
Windows 3.1 before it will function in Windows 95. If you
do not run the Upgrade Assistant in Windows 3.1 prior to
installing Windows 95, and you install Windows 95 in the
same directory as your Windows 3.1 was installed, Upgrade
Assistant will not operate. Additionally, you cannot use
the Upgrade Assistant to transfer Windows 3.1 applications
between two different computers.

Remember that the Remove-IT version 2 on this disk will not
install in Windows 95. To install and use Remove-IT in
Windows 95, use the Remove-IT for Windows 95 disks in this
package.

Again thanks for choosing Remove-IT.
