IMPORTANT NOTICE
================-

If you are updating to R13c4 from an earlier version of AutoCAD
Release 13, these instructions supersede those found in your original
AutoCAD Installation Guides. This file also augments the AutoCAD
Installation Guide for DOS and the AutoCAD Installation Guide for
Windows (publication #00105-011400-5000, dated November 9, 1994).
Please refer to the instructions below for details on the new
installation process.

SETUP.EXE (for Windows) and INSTALL.EXE (for DOS) are now executed
from either the CD-ROM or the Setup Disk(s) (for the diskette
version).

IMPORTANT: The Windows setup program requires that you have at least
3.5 MB of free disk space in the Windows TEMP directory. This is used
to store temporary files during installation.

This new process supports the following procedures:

1.  NEW INSTALLATION
    Requires Personalization Disk provided with new AutoCAD
    shipments.

2   REINSTALLATION
    You are now able to reinstall AutoCAD R13 to the c4 level without
    changing your serial number, reregistering, or using the patch
    process. This procedure requires the original Installation Disk
    (for c0 through c3 version) or the Personalization Disk (for c3)
    supplied with an earlier version of AutoCAD Release 13.
    If you are unable to locate your original Personalization Disk,
    please contact your AutoCAD dealer.

3.  UPDATE
    This is a NEW feature added to the AutoCAD installation process
    allowing you to quickly update an existing installation from any
    previous R13 version (from R13c0 through R13c3b) to the current
    incremental update (R13c4) level.

Additional information
----------------------
+ For users performing an UPDATE from R13c0 or c1. The default for
    the COMMON files directory for the R13c4 release is \com (it was
    \common). If you choose the update option and do not adjust this
    default to \common you will end up with 2 COMMON file
    directories. You can go ahead and delete the \common directory
    and all of its sub-directories, they are no longer needed after
    running an UPDATE to R13c4.

+ For Win32s installations. If any network administrators are
    creating network versions of the Win32s diskettes from the floppy
    media set, the disks must be placed in directories called "disk1"
    for the first disk and "disk2" for the second disk. This is where
    the Microsoft Win32s installation program will look for them.

+ For users performing an UPDATE from any previous versions of
    AutoCAD R13. All files within the AutoCAD installation
    directories must NOT have their read-only attribute set. The
    Setup program must be allowed to overwrite any existing files.
    You can adjust a file by using the ATTRIB -R <filename> command
    to remove the read-only attribute.

R13C4 COMPATIBILITY INFORMATION
===============================-

Because of new technologies used in AutoCAD Release 13c4, there are a
number of compatibility issues of which customers should be aware:

Applications
-------------
Please be aware that NOT ALL existing AutoCAD Release 13 based
applications work with AutoCAD Release 13c4. Because of new
technologies in this release, products that use the AutoCAD ARX
development environment will need to be updated in order to work with
R13c4. This affects Autodesk products, as well as independently
developed applications.

Before installing this update, please refer to the following
compatibility information to determine whether your application is
affected.

AutoVision R2 -- Requires updating to R2c4; this update is included on
the AutoCAD R13c4 media.

Designer 1.2 -- Requires upgrading to Designer 2.0 or Mechanical
Desktop; contact your Authorized AutoCAD Dealer.

AutoSurf 2.1 -- Requires upgrading to AutoSurf 3.0 or Mechanical
Desktop; contact your Authorized AutoCAD Dealer.

IGES Translation R13 -- Requires updating to R13.1; contact your
Authorized AutoCAD Dealer.

WorkCenter 1.1 -- Compatible except that AutoCAD/WorkCenter file open
redirection is unavailable. This feature will be updated. Contact
your Authorized WorkCenter Dealer.

Independent Applications -- Incompatible if application utilizes ARX
functionality; contact your application developer or reseller.
Autodesk publishes compatibility listings provided by developers on
its web site at www.autodesk.com.

Win32s
-------
Version 1.25a of the Microsoft Win32s subsystem is required for
running R13c4 under Windows 3.1x. This version is included on the full
media set and will be posted to the electronic forums.

Read Before Installation
========================-

Vshare
------
The Windows Setup program will not operate correctly unless the
Windows Vshare program (VSHARE.386) is enabled before installation. To
install Vshare under Windows, add the following entry to the [386Enh]
section of the Windows SYSTEM.INI file. For example:

      device=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VSHARE.386

The directory path in this entry should point to the location of the
VSHARE.386 file. Windows must be restarted for this to take effect.

Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and 32 bit Disk/File Access
-------------------------------------------------------
The Windows Setup program will not operate correctly with 32 bit Disk
Access and/or 32 bit File Access enabled. You must disable both of
these options. You can verify or change these options by doing the
following:

1. Run the Control Panel program (typically found in the Main
    program group).
2. Double click on the 386 Enhanced icon.
3. Choose Virtual Memory, then choose Change
4. The check boxes labeled "32 Bit Disk Access" and "32 Bit File
    Access" should be either grayed out or de-selected (no X in the
    box).
5. Select OK. You will be prompted to Restart Windows, any changes
    you make will not take effect until you do so.

Windows 95 and Stacker
----------------------

Autodesk has had reports of problems when SETUP.EXE is used to install
AutoCAD Release 13c4 on a system using both Windows 95 and Stacker.
Autodesk recommends that Stacker not be used.

New Installation/Reinstallation
===============================-
Current installation instructions for Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and
Windows NT are provided in the "Chapter 1 -- Additions to the
Documentation" section of the documentation supplement entitled
AutoCAD Release 13 New Features and Documentation Enhancements. This
document is provided electronically in the R13C4NEW.HLP Help file.
(The R13C4NEW.TXT file is for DOS and does not contain the Windows
installation information.)

In the "Installation Guide Additions" section in chapter 1 of the
documentation supplement, follow the instructions described in the
following subsections.

Windows 3.1 Installation - Read these sections:
+   Chapter 1 - Before Installing AutoCAD
+   Chapter 1 - Single User Installation
+ Chapter 1 - The AutoCAD Network Lock

Windows 95 Installation - Read these sections:
+   Chapter 1 - Single User Installation
+ Chapter 1 - The AutoCAD Network Lock

Windows NT Installation - Read these sections:
+   Chapter 1 - Single User Installation
+ Chapter 1 - The AutoCAD Network Lock
+ Chapter 1 - Installing the Sentinel Driver for Windows NT

Update Installation
===================-
The following steps describe how to update a current installation of
AutoCAD Release 13 for Windows.

1. Insert the CD or the setup disk in the appropriate drive.

2. From the File menu, choose Run, designate the CDROM or floppy
    drive, and enter the path name and SETUP. For example D:\SETUP
    To stop the setup program, choose Cancel. If you cancel the setup
    program after copying has begun, some files remain on the hard
    disk. Restarting the setup program writes over the files left by
    the cancelled installation. If you specify a different directory
    during the second installation, however, you must delete the
    files remaining from the first attempt.

3. When prompted to install or update, enter UPDATE.

4. Enter path to the location of the ACAD.EXE file. For example
    C:\R13\WIN.

5. During the Update process, you will have the option to backup
    your configurable files.
    See below for list of configurable files being backed up - If you
    choose Yes, these files will be copied into a directory called
    \<acadroot>\{DOS,WIN,COM}\backup.000. If you select No, these
    files will be overwritten by the updating software process.
    IMPORTANT NOTE - If a backup.000 directory already exists,
    AutoCAD's update procedure will create a new backup directory
    incremented by one (i.e.: backup.001).

6. The update process then follows the installation instructions
    beginning with Step 5 in the section entitled "Chapter 1--Single
    User Installation" of the R13C4NEW.HLP file.

6. The update process then follows the installation instructions
    beginning with Step 3 in the section entitled "Installing AutoCAD
    for a Single User" as found on Page 7 of the Installation Guide
    for DOS.

=====================================================================-
CONFIGURABLE FILES
==================-

The names of the files backed up by the update process are contained
in the file BACKUP.LST. You can edit this file to back up the files
you want. Initially, BACKUP.LST contains the following filenames:

ACAD.ADS       ACAD.AHP       ACAD.ASE       ACAD.CFG
ACAD.DWG       ACAD.HLP       ACAD.INI       ACAD.LSP
ACAD.MNC       ACAD.MNL       ACAD.MNR       ACAD.MNS
ACAD.MNU       ACAD.PAT       ACAD.PGP       ACAD.UNT
ACADISO.INI    ACADR13.LSP    ASI.INI        HPDRIVER.CFG
RENDER.MLI

=====================================================================-
RESTORING CONFIGURABLE FILES
============================-

You may wish to restore the backed up files to your AutoCAD directory.
If you are updating to R13c4 from the R13c3 level, you may overwrite
the customizable files by copying the back up files from the back up
directory into the appropriate AutoCAD directories. For customers
updating from earlier incremental levels (i.e.; R13c0 through R13c3)
to R13c4, Autodesk suggests that you take a few minutes to compare the
contents of each backed up file with the new R13c4 version. Use your
favorite text editor to then merge the appropriate data with the R13c4
version of the customizable file.
