1.1 -- The Change Directory Command

The Change Directory command allows you to switch the directory that's being displayed in the SmartView window. For example, if you're viewing C:\DOS and you want to check something in C:\WINDOWS, select the Change Directory command and choose the C:\WINDOWS directory. The files in C:\WINDOWS will be displayed in the SmartView window.

1.2 -- Windows vs. DOS Performance

In general, the Windows versions of FastMove! should be used whenever possible, as they provide better performance because they utilize your system's memory more efficiently, producing a faster transfer. Furthermore, when working with a Windows-DOS connection, it is recommended that Windows Local version be used with DOS Remote version. This configuration will avoid DOS memory problems.

1.3 -- User Interface Changes

Main Window

1. A SmartView Sort field on the left side of the Main Window displays which sort parameter -- Name, Type, Size, Date -- is selected under the Sort (by Name) Command in the Options menu.

2. A Hide Equal Signs checkbox on the right side of the Main Window removes all the files with equal signs from the SmartView Window. This way, you can more easily focus on the files that need to be updated on both the Local and Remote systems.

3. In the lower right of the Main Window, blue and yellow total-size arrows provide the cumulative amount of all the files that will be transferred for each respective color. For example, if the total next to the yellow arrow is 1.2M and the total next to the blue arrow is 820K, then, during a two-way synchronization, 1.2 megabytes worth of files would be transferred to the Remote PC and 820 kilobytes worth would be transferred to the Local PC (provided you did not use the Exchange Sides command to alter the default). Of course, the same principle works for one-way transfers. This way, you will know how much space the transfer will take on a given drive.

Transferring Files Confirmation

When you update an entire directory, you will receive a prompt that confirms the files you selected are indeed the ones you want to transfer. There is now an Include Subdirectories checkbox in the confirmation prompt that allows to either transfer or not transfer the subdirectories.

In the past, if you wanted to change whether or not to include subdirectories at the transfer files confirmation, you would have to cancel the transfer, go to the Preferences window under the Options menu, switch the Include Subdirectories checkbox, then redo the transfer. Now, you can make this change straight from the confirmation prompt.

If you are transferring files -- not an entire directory -- the Include Subdirectories checkbox will NOT appear in the transferring files confirmation prompt.

The default for this setting depends on what you have selected in the Include Subdirectories checkbox in the Preferences window.

Deleting a Directory Confirmation

When you use the Delete Directory command under both the Local (File) and Remote (File) menus, you will receive a warning asking if you sure you want to delete the directory you have selected. An Include Subdirectories checkbox has been added to this warning prompt.

There are two possible results depending on whether or not the Include Subdirectories checkbox is selected.

If the checkbox is selected, then clicking on the Yes button will delete the chosen directory along with all its subdirectories. Conversely, since you cannot delete a directory without deleting its subdirectories as well, if you do NOT have the checkbox selected, FastMove! will only delete the files that reside in the chosen directory.

The default for this setting depends on what you have selected in the Include Subdirectories checkbox in the Preferences window.

1.4 -- The Save Settings on Exit Command

The Save Settings on Exit command under the Options menu saves the following items: the configuration (in the event that you used the Exchange Sides command) of the Main Window; the two directories that are selected for the Local and Remote PCs; all the choices that are made in the Preferences window such as Include Subdirectories; any file filters in use; the sort parameter (Name, Type, Size, or Date); and whether or not the Hide Equal Signs option is selected.

This way, the configuration you have when you exit FastMove! is preserved for your next session. This command is selected by default.

1.5 -- The Reset Applet

One problem that may arise if the normal operation of FastMove! is disrupted -- for example, your system locks up -- is that when you try to re-enter FastMove!, you'll receive a message, "FastMove! is still running."

The reason for this message is that FastMove! moves the high bit on the parallel port. This way, FastMove! can take exclusive control of the parallel port for transferring. If your system locks up, when you re-enter FastMove!, the high bit on the parallel port is still adjusted (from the last session in FastMove!). In other words, because of the adjusted high bit, FastMove! still thinks that it's operating.

If this happens, use on the FastMove Reset applet to re-adjust the high bit to allow FastMove to open.

If you use the reset applet on the Local side, the FastMove session on the Remote PC will be closed. You will have to re-enter FastMove on the Remote PC.

To start the applet, go to the FastMove directory and type FMRESET, then press the [ENTER] key.

1.6 -- Detecting Boot Sector Viruses

There are three different kinds of boot sector viruses: those that reside in the boot sector, those that reside in the partition table (which is closely related to your file allocation table -- FAT), and those that have a portion that resides in both.

For those viruses that reside solely in the boot sector or partly in both the boot sector and partition table, FastMove! will detect the virus.

But for viruses that solely reside in the partition table, FastMove! may or may not be able to detect them, depending on whether or not they load into memory. If they do, then FastMove! will detect them. If they do not, then FastMove! will not detect them.

In any case, FastMove! will not transfer either of the three boot sector virus types to a floppy or another PC. The virus spreads when you boot up your system with an infected disk. If you are transferring files to/from a floppy disk or another PC, the virus will not be transported.

If a boot sector virus is detected, please call Trend Micro Devices at 310-936-1188 to obtain a copy of their complete virus removal product.

1.7 -- Backward Compatibility

FastMove! version 1.01 is not backward compatible with FastMove! version 1.00, meaning they cannot communicate with each other. In other words, if you had version 1.01 on your Local PC and version 1.00 on your Remote PC, the different versions would not be able to link. Therefore, if you want to upgrade to version 1.01 and have version 1.00 on either your Local or Remote PCs, you would have to delete any copies of version 1.00.
