1. INTRODUCTION
-----------------

EMBLA LITE is a mail reader/composer running under Windows
3.1/3.11/95/NT and uses the Internet standards MIME, SMTP and POP.

EMBLA LITE is a POP version of our main product EMBLA 1.1,
which was the first commercial product fully designed for
IMAP and MIME.

A PC, called client, must be connected to a computer, called a
mail server, which is equipped with a software for sending/
receiving standard Internet mail.

The main product EMBLA 1.1 requires a mail server equipped with
SMTP services to be able to send mail and IMAP services to be
able to receive mail. EMBLA LITE differs from EMBLA 1.1 that it
requires POP3 receiving mail services.

POP is a simple file transfer protocol, while IMAP is a client/
server protocol.

EMBLA LITE has the same user interface as EMBLA 1.1. Since the
IMAP service is more advanced than POP is, EMBLA LITE does not
support server based message store, which EMBLA 1.1 does.

5. HOW TO CONFIGURE EMBLA LITE
--------------------------

When you start EMBLA LITE for the first time, you have to configure the
program by answering the questions in the Configuration dialog. All your
answers/parameters, together with your preferences (an optional dialog),
will be saved in your Windows directory in a file called EMBLA.INI.

The parameters in EMBLA.INI can be divided in three categories:
   - user parameters: describing your private settings;
   - server parameters: describing your mail server/servers;
   - mail parameters: describing MIME Content Types.

You can change the user and server parameters at any time via Configuration
and Preferences dialogs. The mail parameters can only be changed by editing
the EMBLA.INI file. If you do not specify a value, EMBLA LITE sets default
values for you.

More about to how to configure EMBLA LITE you can find in the file "embla.hlp".
To read this file you can use the Windows program "winhelp.exe", which you
have in your windows directory.

How you can read the file "embla.hlp", without starting EMBLA LITE:

a) Insert the disk EMBLA LITE in drive a.

b) Select in Windows: File Manager -> drive a.

c) Select a file "embla.hlp" from the list and
   double click on it.

d) The file embla.hlp will be displayed by "winhelp.exe".
Select the topic "Getting started" and read it.

Alt. Run "winhelp.exe" with the file "embla.hlp".

6. PROTOCOL STACKS
-------------------

EMBLA LITE is a general purpose Windows Socket
client. This means that the application can be used together
with any TCP/IP network software supporting Windows Socket API V1.1.

EMBLA LITE has been tested with the following TCP/IP software:

  SunSoft PC-NFSpro
  SunSelect PC-NFS
Microsoft TCP/IP V1.0a for Windows for Workgroups 3.11

7. PRODUCT INFORMATION
--------------------------

7.1 EMBLA Lite 1.1c vs 1.1a
---------------------------

Bug Fixes common with EMBLA 1.1c (IMAP)
-------------------------------------

a) Icons in contentwindow was placed on top of each other (Win95).

b) Was consuming 100% CPU time (Win95, NT).

c) "Add Message" operation caused the Main window to be placed
   on top of Compose window.

d) Failed to save configuration (EMBLA.INI) when Windows directory
   was root directory.

e) Incoming "Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary" attachments was incorrectly
labelled as BASE64 and could therefore not be read.

f) If the file path contained an "-" character EMBLA sometimes failed to
   load the parameterfile.

Bug Fixes special to EMBLA Lite 1.1c (POP)
------------------------------------------

 - Bug: GPF when open folder with messages having no Date: header.
+ Fix: Adding safebelts missing in initial code version.

 - Bug: INBOX can be opened twice using double panels and selecting both
local (no server access) and server access (with login) INBOXes.
+ Fix: Since the mailbox folder subsystem have not been designed for this
situation, this is no longer allowed.

 - Bug: A security implication reported by JSB, where users are able to
change the acocunt identity (login id) in the server login dialog,
can result in download of incoming mail from several server
accounts into the same local inbox, causing potential confusion
        for the user.
+ Fix: Since changing account identities "on the fly" is not very useful
when using a store & forward protocol like POP, only the password
field is now editable. Other values can be changed using the
        configuration dialog.

8. Release notes (troubleshooting, known problems)
--------------------------------------------------

Winsock error (10091)at startup
-------------------------------
Ensure that no other winsock.dll file than the one supplied with the TCP/IP
stack you are using, exists in a directory specified on the DOS PATH
environment variable or in the Windows directory.

CR/LF problems
--------------
Some other mail applications (e.g.,PC-Eudora) can cause problems with CR/LF
characters when communicating with EMBLA LITE.
  WORK AROUND:
In the file embla.ini under your Windows directory you should
enter the following line under the section [Text View Preferences]:
   InsertLineFeed=yes

View of SunMail fails second time
---------------------------------
With View you can examine a message. With View Part you can view the
different parts of a multi part message. If the multi part message is a
Sun Mail message, you can view the different parts correctly the first
time you enter the View Message dialog. If you want to view the
message a second time, you can not examine the different parts
correctly.
  WORK AROUND:
Refresh the folder or switch to another folder and back again.

Login dialog appears after each server operation
------------------------------------------------
Open EMBLA LITE configuration dialog. Change Receiving Mail Server
and Sending Mail Server to "servername.domainname".
For example:
Receiving Mail Server: ray
should be changed to
Receiving Mail Server: ray.pro.icl.se

If that does not help, try using the IP-address of the server within
square brackets. For example:
Receiving Mail Server: ray
should be changed to
Receiving Mail Server: [192.34.15.2]

Auto-Check of messages fails sometimes for large applications
-------------------------------------------------------------
When you start up large applications (e.g., MS Word 6.0),
Auto-Check can sometimes fail, because Windows Socket cannot allocate
enough DOS memory when DOS based TCP/IP stacks are used.

National characters in folder and address book names
----------------------------------------------------
Avoid using national characters that are not US-ASCII (e.g., )
in the names of the folders and address books which you create.

Do not use commas (,) in User Names
----------------------------------
Avoid commas in User Names. For example:
John Doe, Whatever Inc

Subject Sorting
----------------
Subject Sorting is not correct if you use national characters.
The sorting is done in the order the characters are represented
in the national character set that you have chosen.

Attach file from diskette
-------------------------
When you compose a message you can use Add File to attach a file
to your message. If you add a file from diskette (a:), EMBLA LITE
considers that all files used after this also are stored on
diskette.
  WORK AROUND:
You can solve this problem in at least two ways:
   1. Copy the file from diskette to hard disk before you attach it;
   2. Attach the file from diskette. Initiate a new Add File from
        hard disk, but interrupt it.

Attention with full hard disk
-----------------------------
When you copy/move a message to a local folder but you have not
enough space on your hard disk, the contents of the local folder
can be corrupted.
  WORK AROUND:
Start an editor (Notepad, Write) in Windows, open the corrupted
folder: it is a file from your Local Folder Directory (see
Configuration), which has the same name as the folder and an
extension .mtx. Delete the last message: it begins with a date.

EMBLA LITE does not start because of unsuitable BWCC.DLL
----------------------------------------------------
If an other Windows application already loaded the file BWCC.DLL,
EMBLA LITE will use that file. If the file has an older version than
EMBLA LITE requires, an error message will tell you from which
directory the file BWCC.DLL has been loaded.
 WORK AROUND:
The right BWCC.DLL is included in EMBLA LITE installation. Copy this
file to the load directory and restart Windows.

EMBLA LITE causes General Protection Fault when opening Address book
--------------------------------------------------------------------
or Compose dialog
-----------------
Normally EMBLA LITE detects if an unsuitable BWCC.DLL is in use.
If this check of some reason should fail this may result in
an General Protection Fault when opening an address book or the
Compose dialog.
WORK AROUND: see previous case "EMBLA LITE does not start ..."

Corrupt Mailbox
---------------
If your mailbox becomes corrupt, e.g. your PC has a power failure,
then EMBLA LITE will be unable to display the mailbox. (You may receive
a message advising that EMBLA LITE cannot parse a mail header). To
overcome this problem the mailbox must be edited to remove the corrupt
message. Using a text editor (e.g. notepad), open the relevant mailbox
message. Using a text editor (e.g. notepad), open the relevant mailbox
(e.g. C:\EMBLA\MAIL\INBOX.MTX), then remove the corrupted message at the
end of the file, including the delimiter line which starts with a date,
followed by a string of byte count and flags.
EMBLA LITE should now be able to load the mailbox.
