Dear WordScan Plus 4.0 Customer,

Following is a list of tips and up to date information:

SCANNERS:

WordScan may allow scanning at resolutions above 600dpi, but it is not
recommended. For OCR purposes, 300 dpi should handle almost any document.

After a paper jam with the Hewlett-Packard ScanJet IIp, you must cycle
the power on the scanner and possibly reboot the system. If this is not
done then WordScan may fail to acknowledge the presence of this scanner.

WordScan Plus 4.0 supports the Kofax video interface with several of its
scanners. With the Kofax interface card, WordScan also requires that the
KIPP 2.03 or later version drivers be used as well.

WordScan erroneously allows a feeder to be selected with the UMAX UC-300
scanner even when a feeder is not present.

Caere observed one strange case where the Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 3p was not
acknowledged as being installed and ready for use within WordScan. After
removing all parameters from the end of the SMARTDRV.EXE line within
AUTOEXEC.BAT, the scanner began to function correctly.

WordScan Plus supports only letter-sized document scanning from the
flatbed of the Fujitsu 3093E scanner. Longer documents such as A4 and
US Legal, must be scanned using the scanner's feeder.

The Pentax IQ Scan scanner supported by WordScan requires that you use
the "/D1" and "/S" parameters with the PENTX-HP.SYS scanner driver to
emulate an HP ScanJet scanner. These parameter are placed in the CONFIG.SYS
file.

Hewlett-Packard's AutoZone feature available within AccuPage should not be
used in conjunction with WordScan's Deferred Processing and Auto-Orientation
features. The reason is that the zones are drawn first by AccuPage and then
the page is oriented, this sequence of events will lead to the zones being
drawn erroneously on the document.

When using AccuPage's AutoZoning feature, you may require more memory than
what you have available. Adding Windows Virtual memory to your
configuration is sufficient.

The AutoBrightness feature within WordScan produces varying degrees of image
improvement with different scanners. Test this feature thoroughly with your
scanner to understand what it does for your documents.

The UMAX UC-300 scanner is not able to scan within WordScan at resolutions
above 300dpi. You may be able to select higher resolutions in some cases,
but they will not function.

The manufacturer of the Complete PC scanners (Boca Systems) is no longer
providing technical support for the flatbed model and has established a
pay-for-support line for the PageScanner (sheet-fed model). If severe
problems arise with these scanners, Caere will not be able to provide the
level of support necessary to solve a problem which lies outside the scope
of WordScan.

TWAIN:

Caere Corporation advises using your supported scanner with its native
scanner driver rather than TWAIN. During our testing of the TWAIN scanner
interface standard, we have found many inconsistencies and believe that
the use of TWAIN may degrade the recognition results that you would
have otherwise received.

We suggest that all scanning with a TWAIN device be done at a resolution
of NO GREATER THAN 300dpi. If you wish to scan graphic images in either
gray-scale or color or if you wish to scan documents at high resolutions
you should use another application which is specially designed for
that task.

We have had specific problems scanning with TWAIN at resolutions above
300dpi with AVR and Envisions model 6100 scanners.

When using TWAIN with a Hewlett-Packard scanner and an ADF, you will
need the latest version of DeskScan II (version 2.1a or later) in order for
everything to operate correctly. Version 2.1a of DeskScan II is available
from the HP CompuServe forum or directly from HP.

The Help button appearing on the TWAIN dialog for Envisions scanners is
not available from within other applications. This was reported using
TWAIN version 1.02.

Scanning using TWAIN's "output scaling" feature will result in dramatically
increased scanning times. We do not suggest using it as a means for
enlarging a document to (hopefully) increase recognition accuracy.

OUTPUT:

TIFF image output from WordScan may not be compatible with your imaging
application. We suggest that you use PCX as an alternative since it is
usually more standard and it held more closely within specification than
TIFF output.

Image files routed to other users using cc:Mail with WordScan's email
feature may not be able to be viewed within cc:Mail. The file formats
produced by WordScan are not compatible with cc:Mail's viewing capability.

If cc:Mail is not available and you have enabled WordScan with the ability
output using email, you will receive an error message. Depending on which
email application you are using the error may be something like "Cannot
find VIM.DLL".

cc:Mail allows only the first page of a multiple document to be transferred
to a recipient. This appears to occur with documents created outside of
and within WordScan.

Do not use an ADF to print a double-sided document from WordScan. Otherwise,
the pages will be printed in the wrong order.

Caere suggests that you process less than 500 pages at any one time within
WordScan. There is no encoded page limit, but our experience shows that
moving this amount of data within a PC is not a fool-proof task. To be safe,
break your documents into smaller more manageable units.

FAX:

Procomm Plus for Windows must be running on the Windows desktop in order
for WordScan to access its received fax log.

Standard faxes will not process as well as Fine resolution faxes when
used for OCR purposes.

COMPATIBILITY WITH OTHER APPLICATIONS:

WordScan may not install when some virus detection applications are running.
These utilities should be closed before attempting to install.

If you wish to use a RAMDrive for the temporary files written by WordScan,
we suggest that you make sure to make it very large. If the RAMDrive is
not sufficiently large, then it is possible that not all portions of your
documents will be included in the output from WordScan.

WordScan's OCR Aware feature is designed for use with other text-based
Windows applications. While some other types applications may be able to
be "OCR-enabled", they may not actually support text input from WordScan.

WordScan is not able to place its OCR Aware functionality into Quattro Pro
version 6.0.

When using FrameMaker and OCR Aware, you must use the "Paste Special..."
command in order to paste text into your document.

USING OLE:

If you wish to use the OLE Drag & Drop feature available within WordScan to
accomplish OCR in one operation, make sure that you size both WordScan and
your target OLE application before initiating the drag and drop. Microsoft
states that you must arrange your application so that you can see both the
target document and the source before a drag and drop since position of the
source information is dependent on the location of the "drop".

WordPerfect 6.1 and Quattro Pro 6.0 does not allow OLE Drag and Drop
operations from WordScan Plus. Both applications require text input in a
form which WordScan is not able to provide.

MISCELLANEOUS:

Job files that have not been completed with WordScan 2.x are NOT compatible
with WordScan Plus 4.0. You will need to export and save them before
upgrading to 4.0.

WordScan is not able to display gray-scale images within its Previewer. The
resulting output file will be gray-scale, but it is displayed as black and
white.

Do not run the WordScan Setup application when WordScan is loaded and
running. After the initial setup of WordScan, this application can be used
to change scanners, email and/or fax usage parameters.

The OCR Aware utility from previous versions of WordScan may need to be
removed from the Windows environment, unless you chose to overwrite the
previous version when you installed WordScan Plus 4.0.

Using shell programs such as DashBoard or Norton Desktop can use more
resources and inhibit WordScan's functionality. If you receive "Out of
Memory" errors while using one of these shell applications, you may need to
disable it or add more memory to your configuration.

WordScan Plus 4.0 is not compatible with and will not act as an interface
for Caere M/Series products.

WordScan Plus 4.0 will not operate with Windows NT.

WordScan Plus 4.0 will not operate with OS/2 version 2.1 or earlier.

If WordScan Plus 4.0 cannot OCR documents within OS/2 Warp, you must install
Win32s version 1.15. These Win32s files are available from the Microsoft
Win32 forum within CompuServe.
