1. TO PRINT THIS FILE
=====================

Determine the port your printer is connected to (LPT1: will be
used for this example). Then type:

COPY README.TXT LPT1:

and press <<Enter>>. This file will be printed on your printer
(the README file is copied to your installation directory by the
INSTALL program).

NOTE: This procedure will not work with a PostScript printer. One
solution is to bring README.TXT into your word processor which
has the PostScript printer driver and print it from there.

2. GENERAL NOTES
================

2.1 Target Service Agent Updates
--------------------------------
Contact Palindrome for the information regarding the availability of new
TSAs as well as updates to existing TSAs.

2.2 Journals
------------
When displaying the system journal, non-volume resources (such as
the NetWare Bindery and NetWare Directory Services) display a
size of 0.

2.3 Name Space
--------------
If you select a case-sensitive name space to track a volume in
(such as NFS), Network Archivist will not allow you to change it
to a name space that does not support case-sensitivity (such as
DOS). Changing name spaces in this manner may cause duplicate
directory and file entries in the File History Database. If you
must change from a case-sensitive name space, contact Palindrome
Technical Support.

2.4 Maximum Concurrent Connections
----------------------------------
Palindrome recommends that you do not limit concurrent
connections for your Auto Login user when defining the user.
This setting is found in SYSCON in the User Information menu
under Account Restrictions. The number of Maximum Connections
must be at least two for proper operation.

2.5 Restoring the Bindery (and NDS) from the Command Line
---------------------------------------------------------
If you need to restore the bindery from the command line (instead
of using the menus) you can use the following syntax:

[LOAD] PNAREST /RO SERVER/BINDERY \*.*

(note that you must include a space between BINDERY and the file
specification)

To restore NetWare Directory Services, use the following syntax:

[LOAD] PNAREST /RO "SERVER/FULL DIRECTORY BACKUP" \*.*

(note that quotation marks are required around the
server\resource specification because there are spaces in the
resource name)

2.6 Upgrades from a 45-Day Live Trial version
---------------------------------------------
Network Archivist Evaluation software allows you to protect
multiple servers and includes AutoLoader Software. When upgrading
to a live version of Network Archivist from an Evaluation copy,
your software is reset to the single server version and
AutoLoader support is disabled. Multi Server Software and
AutoLoader Software must be purchased separately.

2.7 ABOVE16 versus PALSDRV ABOVE16MEG
--------------------------------------
PALSDRV ABOVE16MEG is NOT a substitute for any ABOVE16 switches that you
may load with your host adapter's device driver.

2.8 IBM SCSI Host Adapter Support
---------------------------------
Network Archivist supports IBM SCSI PS2 host adapters. If using this
adapter, you must load the device driver (PS2SCSIA.DSK) and ASPI manager
(IBMASPI.NLM). These files (and IBMENTRY.NLM) are copied to your installation
directory during installation of the software.

        > PS2SCSIA.DSK
SCSI device driver for NetWare 3.x and 4.x. This file replaces
PS2OPT.DSK or PS2SCSI.DSK (using ASPI). This file should be loaded
        first.

        > IBMASPI.NLM
ASPI manager for NetWare 3.x and 4.x. This file should be loaded
        after PS2SCSIA.DSK.

        > IBMENTRY.NLM (optional)
This file should be loaded if you have a SCSI host adapter
from a different vendor that uses the exported ASPI_Entry point.
This file then replaces IBMASPI.NLM which exports a different entry
        point function.

PS2SCSIA.DSK and IBMASPI.NLM can be added to your AUTOEXEC.NCF file
so they load automatically when the server boots.

In addition, the following NetWare patches are required when using the IBM
SCSI host adapter. Contact Novell for information on obtaining these patches.

            NetWare 4.x

2.9 QI-2 Errors During File Manager Install
-------------------------------------------
During installation of File Manager, if you receive QI-2 errors, check for the
following possible causes:

        >Inaccessible System Control Database (AS*.PAC) files
When you install Network Archivist, the System Control Database is
created in the installation directory (default=\PNA). Be sure prior
to installing File Manager that the Auto Login user (and/or the
current logged in user has a search mapping to this directory.

        >Map Root Command
Do not use the Map Root command. If your Network Archivist
installation directory is part of a map root search mapping
change it to a standard search mapping.

        >More than 100 Servers
If you have more than 100 servers on your network, obtain a patch
from Palindrome Technical Support to enable you to install File
        Manager on the network.

3. HARDWARE
===========

3.1 8200 Tape Drives
--------------------
Due to its older technology, standard 8200 tape drives lack
positioning commands available in newer tape drives and therefore
Palindrome recommends the 8200SX or newer tape drives for use
with 3.1 - NLM. If using the standard 8200 tape drive, you will
notice performance impact especially when recovering from error
conditions.

3.2 AutoLoader Support
----------------------
If you currently own AutoLoader Software, you must upgrade to
version 3.1 of the AutoLoader Software to use with Network
Archivist 3.1 - NLM. Call Palindrome's Sales Department to
receive your upgrade.

4. NETWARE - MISC
=======================
 >>Support
Network Archivist NLM 3.1 supports NetWare 4.01 servers. For more
information on backing up and restoring NetWare 4.01 servers, see
the 4XREADME.TXT file on diskette #1.

 >>Auto Login
If protecting volumes on 4.01 servers, do not use
"SUPERVISOR" as your Auto Login user name unless you create
the user on each of your 4.01 servers. NetWare 4.01 does not
provide a default user named "SUPERVISOR".

 >>SFT III
Network Archivist can protect remote SFT III servers. However, due to
a bug in a Novell SMDR, Network Archivist cannot be installed on a
SFT III server. Contact Palindrome to find out the availability of support
    for SFT III.

5. TARGET SERVICE AGENT
=======================
The following lists known bugs with NetWare Target Service
Agents. Novell is currently working on releasing new TSAs to
correct the problems.

5.1 DOS Workstation TSA
-----------------------
 >> No directory attributes are restored on DOS workstations.

 >> The DOS TSA (TSA_NLM.COM) trust mode option (/T) allows
supervisor-equivalent users access to the workstation.
NetWare 4.x servers, however, require the "ADMIN" user only
as the defined user before allowing access to the
     workstation.

 >> If viewing a volume of the workstation you are currently
running from (via PNAVOL), you may experience hang problems.
Because of a TSA problem, do not try to view volumes on the
workstation you are currently running on.

5.2 NetWare Directory Services TSA
----------------------------------
 >> NDS TSA backs up all data in the database but does not store
information on how it is partitioned. This information must
be recreated if restoring NDS from backup media.

 >> If a user object is deleted, references to this object are
also deleted in other objects. After restoring a deleted
object, the restored object no longer has rights to other
     objects.

5.3 NetWare 2.x TSA
-------------------
The NetWare 2.x Target Service Agent is not included on your TSA diskette.
Contact Palindrome for information on its availability.

5.4 OS2 TSA
-----------
The OS2 Target Service Agent, currently being tested, is not included on
your TSA diskette. Contact Palindrome for information on its availability.

6.4 Error Messages
------------------
The following error messages are not included in the
documentation:

APXLT-1 The control database has been successfully
               translated to version << >>.

APXLT-2 The control database has already been translated
to version << >>. Translation is not necessary.

If you want to finish the translation of
workstation volume records which are not fully
translated, use the Verify option under the
               Restore menu in PNA.

A Netware 4.x server has been detected in your
protected resource list. To fully protect this
server, you should add Netware Directory Services
               to your protected resource list.

IPC-40 Service Manager is unable to parse command line <<
               >>.

The Service Manager (PNASM.NLM) was unable to
parse the command line. Some possible reasons are:
               - Invalid executable name.
               - Insufficient memory in the server.
               - Too many command line arguments.

7. UTILITY PROGRAMS
===================
In your installation directory is a Palindrome utility program
for correcting File History Database errors. SNAPDEL.EXE can be
used to correct File History Database errors (specifically, CT-31
and CT-36). SNAPDEL.TXT, also on the diskette, describes how to

8.2 Storage Device Support
---------------------------
Multiple Device Support - includes support for multiple
sequential (tape) and/or random access devices within a single
installation. Devices can be on the same host adapter card or on
separate host adapter cards.

Random Access Device Support - complete support for industry
standard random access devices (e.g., Magneto Optical, Phase
Change Optical, etc.) for backup and/or archiving operations.
Includes support for stand-alone or jukebox devices.

Device Configuration - provides the ability to assign each device
a logical name and configure device usage (i.e., restore only).
Provides device prioritization for backup, archive, restore and
export operations in order to leverage the unique attributes and
benefits of each device type. This allows customers to slowly
migrate their installation to new hardware technology. For
example, a customer with a Archive Viper (DC 600) tape drive
could add a new Hewlett-Packard DAT drive to their installation,
configure the Viper as Read-Only and begin migrating their data
to the new technology while still retaining the ability to
restore data from the older technology.

Expanded Device Support - increased hardware independence through
the support of key industry standard storage devices and
host adapter cards.

Media Copy Capability - supports the ability to copy data from
one piece of media to another for both similar media types and
dissimilar media types. This capability provides a mechanism for
enhancing disaster recovery capabilities by permitting a full
data set on site and off-site. This capability also supports the
migration from one media type to another by permitting, for
example, the ability to copy data from a DC 600 tape to an
optical disk.

Enhanced Robotic Changer Support - expands support to include
both tape autoloaders and optical jukeboxes. Also includes
support for bar-code readers, entry/exit port doors and multiple
drive loaders via the "Shared Robotics" support. Support also
includes the ability to handle a cleaning cartridge in the loader
without over-cleaning the drive.

8.3 Media Scheduling
---------------------
Grandfather/Father/Son or Tower of Hanoi - provides the ability
to select the appropriate rotation strategy for your environment.
GFS offers the benefit of simplicity and predictability while
Tower of Hanoi provides a more advanced schedule designed to vary
media usage for better reliability and ensure appropriate data
archiving and version protection.

Configurable Vault Rotation - allows the administrator to
configure the number of media sets that are permitted on site and
the number of days prior to vault rotation in which to be
notified.

Configurable Rotation Day(s) - allows for the configuration of
automatic media set rotation to a given day or multiple days
under Tower of Hanoi. Under GFS scheduling, there are parameters
to configure the occurrence of Weekly and Monthly media set
rotations.

Preserve Backups - provides the ability to configure the minimum
number of backup sessions to be retained (in days) by the system.
The maximum number is determined by the scheduling algorithm. In
addition, the GFS schedule provides a mechanism for automatically
preserving Weekly or Monthly backups.

Daily Media Change - used to indicate that a new piece of media
should be used each day (i.e., Monday-A1, Tuesday-A2, Wednesday-
A3, etc.).

Configurable Full Day(s) - allows for the configuration of
automatic full backups on a given day or multiple days. Tower of
Hanoi only; GFS automatically performs full backups daily.

Rotation Prediction - allows the user to display the next several
rotations by day and indicates the media requested for that
rotation.

8.4 Error Handling
-------------------
Error Display Window - new error window provides scrollable
window for detailed description of problem as well as recommended
actions.

Help on Error - allows users to specify an error number from
within the user interface and then display and scroll through the
information pertaining to that error message.

Resource Files - all source error message information is now
stored in separate resource files. The files can be updated
independently of the software to provide timely updates on error
handling information and internationalization.

Low-level Error Handling - the software now handles individual
database corruptions and ensures the remainder of the backup is
completed. An individual file history database corruption no
longer prevents the completion of the entire backup. If such a
corruption is encountered, the problem is logged.

Database Reliability - file history databases are now copied to a
central location during execution and the backup copy is updated.
This prevents database corruptions in the event that a system
error occurs across the network during the updating of the
database. Once the database is successfully updated, it is
copied back to the original location. This also provides a
performance improvement on database intensive operations since
the database is now accessed locally rather than remotely.

Unscheduled Rotations Logged - the software now logs when an
unscheduled rotation takes place in the error log.

8.5 User Interface
-------------------
Restore Menu - a separate restore menu has been added that
supports restore original, restore redirected, and restore flat
operations from within the menus.

Byte/File Counter - the byte and file counters now support values
larger than 1GB.

Network View - a new network oriented interface has been added
"on top of" the volume level interface in previous versions.
This new interface replaces the TNARECOV (and PBDRECOV) program
and provides additional volume-oriented capabilities. For
example, an entire server can be "tagged" to do a full checkpoint
operation.

File Finder - the File menu now includes a File Finder to
simplify the identification of files for backup or restore
operations.

8.6 Miscellaneous
------------------
System Control Database - the limitation on System Control
Database size that existed in previous versions of the software
has been eliminated.

Auto Format - the auto format parameter has been removed to avoid
accidental formatting of media. Media formatting can be done via
the menus or from the command line.

Single File Restore Performance - single file restores no longer
scan the entire volume when a single file is selected for
restore.

Enhanced Export/Import Flexibility - export and import operations
no longer require an existing Network Archivist File History
database to complete.

Configurable Migration Threshold - the migration threshold can
now be configured by the administrator. This value applies to
all volumes in the Protected Resource List.

Control Database/History Database Redirection -the RC and RH
restore operations now accept a destination path as well as a
server/volume for redirection.

Serialization - serial numbers are now provided on pre-printed
registration cards. A license also retains its original serial
number as it is upgraded in the future.

Elimination of Checkpoint Only Media Sets - all media sets will
be eligible for both save and checkpoint operations.

PALDIAG - a new utility to provide diagnostic capabilities for
analyzing an installation and specific media. Incorporates the
previous SCSISCAN and PALQTT utilities and enhances their
capabilities.
