II.	USABILITY AND DESIGN CHANGES IN VERSION 4.0

A) Editing Charts and Formatting Chart Elements

In previous versions of ClarisWorks, chart elements such as axes labels
and legend text took their font, size, and style attributes from the
formatting of the cells being charted in the ClarisWorks spreadsheet.
If the formatting changed, so did the chart.

In version 4.0, you can format chart elements directly. For example,
to format legend text, click the legend to select it, and then use the
commands in the Format menu to apply font, size, and style attributes.

B) Working with Stationery and Assistants: Location on Disk

In previous versions of ClarisWorks, the ClarisWorks Assistants and
ClarisWorks Template folders were located in the Claris folder in the
Windows folder. When you created new documents, ClarisWorks looked in
those folders for the Assistants and Stationery choices displayed in
the New Document dialog box.

With ClarisWorks 4.0, the ClarisWorks Stationery, ClarisWorks
Assistants, ClarisWorks Libraries, and ClarisWorks Styles folders
are located in the ClarisWorks 4.0 folder, not in the Claris folder.
The ClarisWorks folder, by default, is placed inside the Claris Corp
folder within the Program Files folder.

When you create Stationery documents in version 4.0, or if you want
to use Stationery documents created in previous versions of
ClarisWorks, put them in the ClarisWorks Template folder in the
ClarisWorks 4.0 folder. Then you'll see the Stationery documents as
choices when you create new documents. Similarly, you may want to put
libraries you create in the ClarisWorks Libraries folder so that they
will be directly accessible when you use the Library command in the
File menu.

C) Working with Text Styles Created in ClarisWorks 3.0

In ClarisWorks 3.0, you could create reusable text styles with your
favorite settings for font, size, style, and text color. These text
styles were added to the Style menu and assigned a Control key equivalent.

ClarisWorks 4.0 supports many different reusable styles for text,
paragraphs, outlines, graphics, and tables. When you open
ClarisWorks 3.0 documents in ClarisWorks 4.0, all existing text styles
are added to the new Stylesheet palette.

To use these styles in your converted documents:

1) Choose Show Styles from the Window menu.
2) Select the text you want to format using an existing style.
3) In the Stylesheet palette, click the name of the style that you
want to apply to the selected text.

D) Working with Mail Merge

Because of file format changes in ClarisWorks 4.0, you need to update
the field variables in merge documents created in previous versions
of ClarisWorks.

Note:	Field variables (for example, <<address>>) are database
field names surrounded by the delimiter symbols << and >>. A merge
document is a ClarisWorks document, such as a form letter, that
contains field variables.

To update your merge document:

1) Open the merge document and then choose Mail Merge from the File menu.
2) In the Open Document dialog box, navigate to and select the
ClarisWorks database document that contains the fields you want
to merge, and then click Open.
3) In the merge document, select the first field variable. Be sure
   to include its surrounding delimiters.
4) In the Mail Merge palette, select a field from the Field Names list
   and click Insert Field.

Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each field in the merge document.
Save the merge document by choosing Save from the File menu.

III.	TECHNICAL NOTES AND TIPS

A) Using Documents Created in ClarisWorks 3.0

ClarisWorks 4.0 has a different file format than ClarisWorks 3.0.

When you open version 1.0 and 3.0 files in ClarisWorks 4.0, you will see
the message "This document was created by a previous version of
ClarisWorks. A copy will be opened and '[v4.0]' will be added to the
filename."

To replace your ClarisWorks 1.0 or 3.0 files with ClarisWorks 4.0
versions, choose Save or Save As from the File menu, remove [v4.0]
from the file name, and click Yes when ClarisWorks asks if you want to
replace the existing file. If you are converting a number of files to the
4.0 file format, you can turn off the warning and the [v4.0] filename
suffix by choosing Preferences from the Edit menu and selecting the
General icon from the scrolling list. Then deselect "Old Version Alert"
and "[v4.0] Suffix."

Important:	At this time, ClarisWorks 4.0v1 reads files from older
versions of the product but it does not save (write) them in a format
that older versions can read. Once you save a file in 4.0 format, older
versions of ClarisWorks can't open it. If you want to preserve the
original document, rename converted documents when you save changes.

B) Using ClarisWorks 3.0 and 4.0 on the Same PC

Some users may want to have both versions 3.0 and 4.0. (You might choose
to do this if others in your organization have older versions of
ClarisWorks.) Keep in mind that:

* ClarisWorks 4.0 is a Windows 95 application and will not run under
Windows 3.1. To use versions 3.0 and 4.0 on the same computer, you must
install both versions on a computer running Windows 95. The desktop
documents icons for documents created in older versions of ClarisWorks
may look the same as the desktop document icons of documents created in
  version 4.0.

* ClarisWorks 3.0 uses Assistants and Stationery stored in the Claris
folder in the Windows folder, while ClarisWorks version 4.0 uses the
Assistants and Stationery stored in the ClarisWorks 4.0 folder. See
"Working with Stationery and Assistants: Location on Disk" in Section II
  for details.

C) Sharing Files with ClarisWorks 4.0 for Macintosh

ClarisWorks 4.0 for Windows 95 has the same file format, user interface,
and features as ClarisWorks 4.0 for Macintosh. ClarisWorks 4.0 for
Windows 95 also opens files created in ClarisWorks for Macintosh
versions 2.0, 2.1, and 3.0 and converts the files to version 4.0 format.
You can create a ClarisWorks document on Windows 95 and edit it on a
Macintosh computer or vice versa. Consequently, if you work with both
Windows 95 and Macintosh versions of ClarisWorks, or if you collaborate
with colleagues who use ClarisWorks 4.0 for Macintosh, you can work without
translating files or learning a different program.

Due to differences between Windows 95 and Macintosh platforms, you must
use a file transfer program such as PC Exchange, AccessPC, or a similar
utility to transfer files via floppy disk. These utilities require that
your Macintosh have a high density drive (FDHD SuperDrive). Follow the
directions in the documentation of the file transfer utility program.
After copying the files to a PC-formatted disk, be sure to include the
.CWK extension.

After renaming your files, you can copy them to your PC's hard drive and
open them as you would any ClarisWorks document.

Fonts, margins, page breaks, and graphics may look different after they
are transferred from the Macintosh. You can minimize unintended font
changes by using TrueType fonts on both platforms. Helvetica on the
Macintosh converts well to Arial on Windows 95, and Times converts well
to Times New Roman. To restore the original page breaks, you may need to
change the margins and page breaks. QuickTime movies will be converted to
PICT images. Some macros created on the Macintosh may not run as expected
on Windows 95. In these cases, you'll need to recreate those macros.

D) Using OLE servers with ClarisWorks 4.0

ClarisWorks documents can contain objects, such as charts or video clips,
created by any Windows OLE server application. The new OLE tools palette
collects all the OLE features into one convenient place. To display the
OLE tools palette, choose Show OLE Palette from the Window menu. The
following list of servers have been tested with ClarisWorks and are
displayed by default in the OLE tools palette:

* Excel
* WordArt
* Media Player
* Equation Editor
* Visio
* ClipArt Gallery
* Paint

Although the above list of servers have been tested to work with
ClarisWorks, any OLE server that adheres closely to Microsoft's OLE 2.0
specifications should be able to work with ClarisWorks as well. If you
ever encounter unexpected results while using OLE, the problem may be a
server which doesn't fully adhere to Microsoft's OLE 2.0 specifications.
Try the operation again using a client other than ClarisWorks (such as
WordPad or Excel). If you still get unexpected results, you may contact
the manufacturer of the server application.

If you intend to print ClarisWorks documents containing OLE objects to
Postscript printers from a Macintosh, please ensure that you are using
ClarisWorks 4.0v2 for Macintosh or higher.

E) Printing

ClarisWorks 4.0 was tested with the printer drivers which ship with
Windows 95. If you encounter difficulties while printing, you may be using
a printer driver which does not function correctly with Windows 95.
Reinstall the printer using the driver that came with Windows 95. Set
this printer as the default printer driver.

If you encounter printing errors while printing Gradients to inkjet
printers, try the Faster Gradients option. Choose Preferences from the
Edit menu. In the Preferences dialog box, click the Graphics icon in the
scrolling list, then select Faster Gradients. If you have a color matching
problem, make sure you are using a Windows95 compatible video card and
printer drivers.

F) Generic / Text Only Printer Driver

Because ClarisWorks integrates text with graphic objects, it is not
compatible with the Generic / Text Only printer driver. If you attempt
to print using this driver, you will receive an error message saying
"Unable to start print job." To correct this problem, choose Print Setup
from the File menu and select another printer driver that is compatible
with your printer.

G) Printing Patterns

ClarisWorks supplies a palette of patterns that you can apply to graphic
objects. Because these patterns are 72 dots per inch, high resolution
printers do not print patterns as they appear on the screen. You might
want to select patterns that are less dense than others. Another
alternative is to copy your object, use the paint tool to draw out a paint
frame, paste the graphic object into the paint frame, and set the line
width of the paint frame to None. Objects within a paint frame do not
scale to the resolution of the printer, so the pattern will print as it
appears on the screen.

H) To enhance the performance of ClarisWorks 4.0

To enable ClarisWorks to run efficiently on your computer, virtual memory
should be set to the following default option in your control panel.
"Let windows manage my virtual memory settings (Recommended)".

I) Running under non-US Versions of Windows 95
When installing on international versions of Windows 95, the ClarisWorks
installer ignores characters that are upper ASCII characters. You may
rename folders with upper ASCII characters after installation of
ClarisWorks. We recommend using a localized version of ClarisWorks.

J) Editing Documents Created with the ClarisWorks Assistants

Some documents created using the ClarisWorks Assistants or provided as
Stationery files contain objects that are locked or grouped. (Locking
and grouping keeps text and graphics objects in position and prevents
accidental edits.)

To unlock and ungroup objects so you can move or edit them:

1) If the Arrow tool isn't selected, click it, and then select the object.
2) Choose Unlock or Ungroup from the Arrange menu. If an object is both
locked and grouped, first unlock it and then ungroup it.

To edit a text object, click the Text tool and then click the text you
want to edit.

K) Importing EPSF Images

When you import or insert an EPSF (Encapsulated Postscript File) image
into a ClarisWorks document, it is converted to a bitmap.

L) Changing your Communications Document Default

If you frequently use another communications package other than
Microsoft Windows95 Hyperterminal, ClarisWorks can launch the program
automatically. Choose Preferences from the Edit menu and click the
Communication icon (on the left) to display preferences for this category.
Click the Change To... button under HYPERTRM.EXE and select your
communications software program (an .exe file).
