*** Wintune 95 Beta 4 (09/14/95) ***

Thank you for testing Wintune 95. This file lists the
common problems you may have. Please read it before
posting questions. Thanks.

Changes made since Beta 3 are explained below.
Please unzip this into a new directory, not the same
one you used for Beta 3.

Wintune95 is meant only for the release version
(build 950) of Windows 95 and for Windows NT 3.51.
Windows 3.1 is not supported.

============
INSTALLATION
============
There isn't an installation utility yet, but it's
pretty simple to do manually. Unzip the files to
their own directory, then run WINTUN95.EXE. You can
drag the EXE file to your Start button or desktop
to create a shortcut and make it easy to launch.
To uninstall just delete the files.

Missing DLLs
------------
(This happens mostly with NT, rarely with Win95.)
If Wintune doesn't start and you get a message
you're missing MFCxxx.DLL, you should download
the file WTMFC.ZIP where you got this beta. If
you're running Win95, you can also get the DLLs
by just installing WordPad from the Win95 disks.

======================
PLEASE DO THIS *FIRST*
======================
1) Run WINTUN95.EXE
2) Click the "Analyze Now" button.
3) Select File/Export Current from the menu.
4) Use a file name of <YourEmailID>.WTX; CIS
   users just use your last name.
5) Upload this file to the WinMag forum on AOL or
   CIS, Wintune95 section. Or, you can email the
   file to dmethvin@aol.com.
6) *Now* you can experiment!

We're particularly interested in the following:

* CPU identification. If you have a NexGen 586
  or an IBM Blue Lightning chip, what does
  Wintune say your chip is?
* Repeatability: Are your results within 10% if
  you run the tests a second or third time?
* Database interference: Do your results change
  if you import the large WTX files?

=============
NEW IN BETA 4
=============

Once you've saved your initial results into
a WTX file, you might want to download and
import one of the WTX files we've posted.
They have the data returned by those fabulous
Beta3 testers. I thank them profusely.

Because of the volume of data, I don't advise
that you download ALL of the WTX files and
import them, it will cause Wintune to load
very slowly. We're working on this problem.

All the tests are being converted to the style
shown by the CPU analyzer, and should be complete
by Beta5. When you haven't yet run tests they
show as "Not tested". Each analyzer will have a
test date/time so you know when the tests were
run.

* No more import crash bug.
* Now can select multiple WTX to import at once.
* Dragging WTX files to Wintune will import them.
* Clicking on heading in Database will sort list.
* Right-click on database item brings up menu.
* Added 2D chart option.
* Print & Print Preview implemented for reports.
* More system details dug from various places.
* CPU Load now works (Beta3 showed bogus 1%).

Freshness Date
--------------
This beta has a built-in check so that it will
stop working at the end of October. This is to
ensure that we don't have to support bug-filled
beta copies of Wintune after we've shipped the
(hopefully less bug-filled) first release.

KNOWN BUGS/PROBLEMS
===================
We're aware of (and going to fix) these items, so
you don't need to post problem reports about them.
Go find some bugs of your own!

Tips
----
Not all tips are implemented. The help file entries
for the tips aren't written yet. Some tips may fire
incorrectly. Let us know if you're getting a tip
that doesn't seem right.

General issues
--------------
* Can't save multiple runs from same PC in database;
  save results to WTX as a workaround.
* Window is too big on virtual desktops (9GXi).
* There is no help file. (As if you'd read it 8-)
* Need a splash screen to cover up database load.
* Need install and uninstall routine.
* Icons/bitmaps could use an artist's touch.

Basics tab
----------
* Can't get tip text that you see in Details.

Database Tab
------------
* Ctrl-Click/Shift-Click to multi select, gack!

Charts tab
----------
* Perspective on 3D graph still needs changing.
* Printing is not implemented.

Reports tab
-----------
* Tips are not listed on any report format.

Details tab
-----------
* Right-click menu needs enable/disable options.
* Test doesn't run when started from here.

APPS ANALYZER

SUPPORT
=======
We'll be taking feedback and answering questions in
both the America Online and Compuserve WinMag forums
in the Wintune95 folder/section. Please stop by.

Since many people may have the same questions, we'll
be discouraging direct email. It's better for all the
beta testers to share their experiences. We can
answer everyone with one message in the forums, which
saves effort and leaves us more time for programming.

If you can't reach us any other way, send email to
dmethvin@aol.com.

Again, thanks for testing Wintune 95!
