on-line help. If information in the user's manual or help file conflicts
with information presented here, the information in this Readme.txt file
should be considered correct and the most recent.

How To Use This Document
------------------------

To view Readme.txt on screen in Notepad, maximize the Notepad window.

To print Readme.txt, open it in Notepad, WordPad, or another word
processor.  Then select the entire document and format the text in
10-point Courier font before printing.

   1.  Installing Arcada Backup for Windows 95
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run the "setup" utility in the directory containing the compressed
files.  This utility will launch InstallSHIELD which will take you
through the process of creating folders and uncompressing the files
that comprise Arcada Backup for Windows 95.


   2.  Uninstalling Arcada Backup for Windows 95
------------------------------------------------------------------------
To uninstall Arcada Backup for Windows 95, follow these steps:

1) Ensure that Arcada Backup for Windows 95 is not running.
2) Close all folders.
3) Go to Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panel, click Control Panel
4) Double click on "Add/Remove Programs" icon.
5) Select "Arcada Backup" from the list of programs.
6) Click on the "Add/Remove" button to uninstall, confirm by clicking
   the "Yes" button.


   3.  QIC Tape Formatting During Multiple Tape Backups
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before performing a backup operation that will require more than one QIC
tape, you must pre-format enough tapes to accommodate the data.
Formatting tapes on the fly as you span from one tape to another during
the backup operation is currently not supported.  It is highly
recommended that you format tapes in the drive where you will use them.


   4.  NetWare Bindery
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The NetWare Bindery and extended attributes are not backed up.  Only
native file attributes and file data are backed up on NetWare volumes.
Please refer to the on-line help for more information.

Note: NetWare bindery data cannot be restored from DOS/Windows 3.1
      backup sets using this release of Arcada Backup for Windows 95.


   5.  Reporting
------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is recommended that the report be viewed for information on skipped
or corrupt files after every scheduled backup job completes.  This
type of information is not presented to the user in a dialog box after
a scheduled backup.


   6.  Restoring The Registry
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Restoring the Registry may cause serious problems if your hardware
configuration has changed since you last backed up the Registry.  Do not
attempt to restore the Registry if you are uncertain it matches your
current hardware configuration.


   7.  Unattended Backup Jobs
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to run a backup job without encountering prompts, be sure to
close all other applications so that no open files are found, or
schedule the backup job. No prompts are generated during scheduled jobs.


   8.  DMA Conflicts Using Internal QIC Drives
------------------------------------------------------------------------
When using QIC drives having a Floppy Disk Controller (FDC) interface,
if an error message occurs indicating a DMA conflict during a restore
job; it is suggested you try modifying your drive settings and
attempting another restore.  To modify drive settings in Windows 95,
follow these steps:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Point to Settings.
3. Click the Control Panel.
4. Double Click the System folder.
5. Click the Device Manager tab.
6. Highlight the tape drive in the device tree and click Properties.
7. Click the Settings tab.
8. Deselect the following check boxes one at a time in this order and
   retry the job until no DMA conflicts occur:

      a) High speed burst transfers
      b) Concurrent hard disk access
      c) Concurrent video update


   9.  Device Configuration
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you encounter a "No Devices Found" message when starting
Arcada Backup for Windows 95 or you're having configuration problems,
the following steps are recommended.

1) Configure the high speed tape controller if you have one.
2) Exit Arcada Backup for Windows 95.
3) Right click on My Computer.
4) Click on Properties.
5) Click Device Manager tab.
6) Verify that TAPE is present in the hardware tree.
7) a) If TAPE is present, double click TAPE icon and verify that your
      drive is correctly identified.  If an '!' or '?' appears in front
      of the device, you have an IRQ, DMA or I/O Address conflict.
   b) If TAPE is not present in tree, shut down computer, check power
      and data cables, power up, repeat steps 4-7.  If TAPE is still
      not present in the hardware tree, go to Add Hardware utility in
      the Control Panel.  If still not detected by Windows 95, call
      the device manufacturer.

On rare occasions when the TAPE device is recognized by Windows 95 in
the device tree, but Arcada Backup for Windows 95 is reporting
"unknown device found", you can follow these steps to run the
plug-n-play tape utility:

1) On Windows 95 tool bar, click Start.
2) Click Run.
3) Enter the path C:\Arcada Backup\SYSTEM\PNPWTAPE and run it.

Try loading Arcada Backup for Windows 95 again and see if the problem
is solved.  If not, contact technical support.

  10.  Floppy Access While Using Internal QIC Drives
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Floppy access through the Windows 95 Explorer is blocked by
Arcada Backup for Windows 95 when the Floppy Disk Controller is being
used to control a tape drive.  A message will be posted by Windows 95
indicating that floppy access is currently not possible.

Attempting a low level access of the floppy drive (i.e. format A:)
through the DOS box during a data management operation will cause the
current tape operation to fail.  There is currently no provision in
Windows 95 for allowing low level FDC accesses to be trapped when
initiated through the DOS box.


  11.  Restoring To Full Hard Disk
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Restoring to a hard disk that is nearly full may cause a stack fault.
The problem is further aggravated by Windows 95 because it grows its
virtual memory on demand, thus reducing available disk space when it's
most needed during a restore job.  It is recommended that you free
up disk space and begin the restore job again if this problem occurs.


  12.  Power Management Conflicts
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Desktop systems having "green" monitors and many laptop computers
have power management features that may conflict with
Arcada Backup for Windows 95.  Your machine may not return from
it's power saving mode while a backup, restore, or tape utility
is in progress.  If you experience this problem, it is recommended
that you turn all power management features OFF while using
Arcada Backup for Windows 95 and use AC power with laptops.
