CONFIGURATION

1. Memory Requirements

Kurzweil VOICE requires 8 MB of dedicated RAM for the 30,000 word
vocabulary, and 16 MB of dedicated RAM for the 60,000 word
vocabulary. This RAM is in addition to the RAM required by the
operating system and applications.

2. Swap File Size

A 10 MB permanent swap file is suggested while using VOICE, but
while doing enrollment, a 20 MB swap file is required.

3. Kurzweil VOICE with IRQ 7

If you are using the Kurzweil sound card, VOICE can share IRQ 7
with LPT1.

4. If VOICE is totally deaf

If you are using the Mwave Windsurfer sound card and VOICE can't
hear you at all, be sure your microphone and headphone connectors
are plugged into the correct jacks. Refer to the graphic on the
card entitled "Installing Kurzweil VOICE With The Mwave
Windsurfer."

FEATURES AND APPLICATION TIPS

5. Open-application commands

If you can't launch your application with the "open-" command,
you may need to edit the command.

Using the Command Editor, Find the open command for your
application in the Open-Applications list and edit it. Press the
BROWSE button or type the full path name of the executable in the
"Command Line" window. Example: The "open-word" command assumes
the Word for Windows executable, winword.exe, is installed in
c:\winword\. However, anyone who has installed Microsoft Office
will have installed winword.exe in c:\msoffice\winword\. In that
event, edit the command line for "open-word" to read
c:\msoffice\winword\winword.exe.

The open-application commands will not always switch to an
already running application. Some of them will launch a copy of
the application.

6. System Modal dialogs

You cannot speak to system modal dialogs using Kurzweil VOICE.
For example, you cannot say "OK" or "Cancel" to the "This will
end your windows session" prompt.

7. Enrollment Calculation and Screen Savers

Disable your screen saver before beginning enrollment. Enrollment
calculations slow down considerably if a screen saver interrupts
them. Calculations should take an hour or so without
a screen saver active.

8. Tutorials

VOICE does not work well with the following tutorials:
     Microsoft Windows
     Microsoft PowerPoint
     Lotus Freelance Graphics
These tutorials take over the screen, mouse and keyboard,
and assume that users will run the tutorial to completion before
activating other applications. Also, WordPerfect Coaches have
dialogs which require mouse input (i.e., keyboard and voice will
not work).

9. VOICE Control Menu and DOS box

You cannot speak to the control menu on the VOICE center window
and you cannot speak to the DOS box.

10. Lotus Notes Crash

Lotus Notes crashes when used with Kurzweil VOICE. There is
a problem with the QNCW.EXE, the Notes debugger. A work-around
is to rename QNCW.EXE to QNCW.OLD.

11. New Command: delete-noise

If VOICE recognizes a noise, and you see "word not recognized"
as the best choice in the Take window, you will have missing or
unusable alternatives. Say "delete-noise" to restore alternatives
for the last good recognition.

12. Using VOICE with Lotus 1-2-3

Say "auto-spacing-off" before dictating numbers or forumulas to
Lotus 1-2-3. Say "auto-spacing-on" before exiting Lotus 1-2-3 and
moving to another application.

13. Moving windows by voice

From program manager, you can use the VOICE command move-document
or move-application to move the selected window by voice. Select
the window to be moved; say move-document to change the mouse
pointer to a four-headed arrow. Then say any of the arrow-keys to
move the window one step in the direction of the arrow. Repeat
the arrow command to move the window again. End the move
operation by saying enter-key

14. Adding words to VOICE to share with other users.

Free text additions resulting from use of the correct-that
command are local to your individual voice profile and can't be
shared with other users. If you want other users to have your
words available, add the new words into the Global Words Command
list using the command editor Each user will have to train these
words.

15. Using Extended keys

Extended keys are entered through the voice keyboard. For
accurate recognition, these keys need to be in a different
command list from free text (which is why they are used through
the voice keyboard.)

16. Using VOICE with embedded objects

In order to edit embedded objects by VOICE, you must first
switch to the application which created the object.
