Course Name: Dunes National G. C.
JNSE Design: Marshall Gerometta
Type: Fictional course located on southern Lake Michigan shoreline
Version: 2.0

This course has been an idea ever since I was young. I grew up only a
couple miles from this location. The property was originally owned by
Inland Steel Co., and then purchased by the Federal Government to be
included in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park. It is now the West
Beach section of the park. I always thought it would nice to have a golf
course winding through this beautiful setting. A "Pine Valley" style course
would be best, so not to disturb the sand dunes. In 1987, I designed this
course for Mean 18. I finally got around to putting it on JNSE. I altered
a few of the holes to make them more playable. I've included the Chicago
skyline in the background, which is visable on clear days. Of course it can
always be a clear day when you play this game. A couple of the objects;
cattails and sand fence are mine, but the rest I borrowed from other
courses. Thanks again to John Kunyik for his palette editor, which was
very useful in getting the right colour of the sand.

You'll find pretty generous landing areas on your tee shots, but if you
miss the fairway, the sand dunes are waiting, because there is not that
much rough. Some of the greens are tricky, so it is a good idea to keep
your approach shots below the pin. A few of the holes have alternate tee
boxes, I use on my other versions of this course. Here's the card and a
hole by hole description:

#1 An elevated tee with a wide fairway. I left a large white pine in the
left side of the fairway. Aim between the pine and the bunkers on the
right, or you could be blocked on your second shot.

#2 Long par 4 with sand dunes on the right. The fairway slopes to the left
to a long crescent-shaped green. Plays really tough when the pin is
   tucked back and right.

#3 You have 3 options on your tee shot. Play the left fairway, leaving a
medium iron. Hit the tight landing area on the right, leaving a wedge.
Or blow it over everything, leaving a short pitch shot. The green has
   3 tiers.

#4 Scenic par 3 with a large 2-tiered green. It's an all-carry long iron
over sand, dune grass and small pines.

#5 Here's a fun little par 4. You can lay up to the right or go for the
green. It's about a 240 yard carry to clear the water. The green is
   small and undulating.

#6 Back across the pond to another small green surrounded on 3 sides by
water. There is an alternate green on the right. Move the pins and use
the other tee boxes for many interesting combinations.

#7 A long downhill par 5 with a split fairway. If the pin is the right
side of the large horseshoe-shaped green, hit a big drive down the
right side, and you can go for it in 2. No matter where the pin is,
make sure you hit your approach shot the that area of the green, or
you could be left with putt well over 100 ft. and blocked by the pond.
This game won't let you chip from the putting surface. Play this hole
smart and you can pick up strokes, if your playing against the computer.

#8 This is probably the toughest hole on the course. Hit a big drive and
avoid the bunkers. Then you must hit a long iron uphill over a series
of step-bunkers in the middle of the fairway to a large green. If you
think this hole is too tough as a par 4, move the tee to the back tee
box and change the par to 5. I did that on that on an alternate version
   of this course.

#9 Here's another very difficult par 4. Your second shot must carry a sandy
blow-out to an elevated green. If you think you can't reach the green,
you can bail out to the left. Whatever you do, don't leave it short.

#10 A wide fairway awaits your tee shot. The second shot is the key to a
   large elevated, cloverleaf green.

#11 This is a scenic par 3, with a pond in front and large dune in the
background. Take one less club to allow for the drop in elevation.
Once on the putting surface, you will encounter a slope from back to
   front.

#12 A reachable par 5, with a wide and shallow undulating green. It's
best to lay-up with your second shot to the landing area on the right.
Then you can stick a wedge in tight.

#13 A long par 4, with the beach right behind the green. Hit a long drive
and beware of the pond on the left.

#14 Another short par 4 with water left the whole length of the hole. Watch
out for the water that crosses the fairway within reach of a wood. Lay
up with an iron or easy fairway wood.

#15 An all-carry par 3. A pin placement on the right gives you the choice
of playing safe or going for it.

#16 A dune splits the fairway. The left side is wider, but leaves a longer
   approach shot.

#17 A dogleg-left par 5, that allows you to cut off as much as you dare from
the inland marsh. Go through the fairway, and you will end up on the
   beach.

#18 For the finishing hole, you have a long par 4 with the marsh on the left
and the dunes and beach on the right. The green is long and guarded by
   water on the left.

I hope you enjoy playing this course as much as I did, in creating it.
Feel free to share it, in it's un-altered form. (c) 1986,1994 Wolf Designs
