----------------------------------------------------
INSTALLATION OF 32-BIT OR 16-BIT VISIO TECHNICAL 4.0
----------------------------------------------------
The Visio Technical 4.0 setup program will automatically detect which operating system you are using (Windows 3.x, Windows 95, or Windows NT 3.51) and will install either a 32-bit or 16-bit version of Visio Technical, whichever is appropriate. As a result, some of the setup disks may not be needed for your particular installation. Setup will ask you to insert only the disks that are needed.

If necessary, you can force an installation of 16-bit Visio Technical 4.0 on a 32-bit operating system (Windows 95 or Windows NT) by running Setup with "/16" on the command line. For example:

1. Select Run... from the Start Menu in Windows 95, or from the Program Manager File menu in Windows NT.
2. Type A:\setup /16 and click OK.

-------------------------------------------------------------
INSTALLING VISIO TECHNICAL 4.0 OVER EARLIER VERSIONS OF VISIO
-------------------------------------------------------------
When you install Visio Technical 4.0 in the same directory as Visio 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0, or Visio Technical 3.0, Setup gives you the option to save copies of the earlier versions of stencils and templates in a separate subdirectory. Any custom stencils and templates you have created as well as drawing files saved in the old Visio directory tree will be retained.

Visio Technical 4.0 setup will delete some files, such as add-ons, which are no longer necessary due to enhancements in the Visio Technical 4.0 engine that replace earlier functionality.

When Visio Technical 4.0 is installed on top of Visio Technical 3.0, the C-cpp, Library, Sample, and Stndoc subdirectories within the Add-ons subdirectory are left as is. Users can choose to manually delete these subdirectories and their contents, or users can install the contents of the disk that accompanies the "Developing Visio Solutions" manual, in which case the C-cpp, Library, Sample, and Stndoc subdirectories will be backed up to the Add-ons\Tools.old subdirectory.

Software Diagrams
------------------
Visio Technical 4.0 contains a larger assortment of line-end styles than previous versions of Visio and Visio Technical. This eliminates the need for CREATEND.EXE and LINEND.EXE, add-ons which shipped with Visio Technical 3.0 and the Advanced Software Diagramming product and are used to create and apply custom line ends.

If you have created custom line ends with the CREATEND.EXE add-on or if you have drawings which utilize the connectors that launch the "Line End Style" dialog box on double-click from the S_BOOCH.VSS, S_MARTIN.VSS, or S_RUMBAU.VSS stencils, you will want to save the CREATEND.EXE and LINEND.EXE add-ons. (The installation of Visio Technical 4.0 leaves these add-ons and their associated files and subdirectories as is.)

Otherwise, we recommend that you delete CREATEND.EXE, LINEND.EXE, and their associated files and subdirectories from your hard drive as follows:

	\Add-ons\CREATEND.EXE
	\Add-ons\CREATEND.HLP
	\Add-ons\LINEND.EXE
	\Add-ons\Softpref

-----------------------------------------------------------
INSTALLING AND RUNNING VISIO TECHNICAL 4.0 UNDER WINDOWS NT
-----------------------------------------------------------
The 32-bit version of Visio Technical 4.0 has been specifically designed and optimized to run only under the 3.51 release of Windows NT and is not supported under the 3.5 release. If you attempt to run 32-bit Visio 4.0 under NT 3.5, you will encounter the following NT error:

"Visio32.EXE - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point PageSetupDlgA could not be located in the dynamic link library comdlg32.dll."

The 16-bit version of Visio Technical 4.0 will install and run under the 3.5 release of Windows NT. For instructions on installing 16-bit Visio in a 32-bit operating system, see "Installation of 32-bit or 16-bit Visio Technical 4.0" above.

-------------------------------------------------------
OPENING AND SAVING VISIO 2.0 AND 3.0 FILES IN VISIO 4.0
-------------------------------------------------------
In Visio Technical 4.0, you can open files created in Visio 2.0 or 3.0 (including Visio Technical 3.0). You can then save them as Visio 4.0 files or in their original formats. However, if you add any attributes specific to Visio 4.0 and then save files in their original formats, the 4.0 attributes will be lost (for a list of attributes see "Saving Visio Technical 4.0 Files As Visio 2.0 or 3.0 Files" below).

To open a Visio 2.0 or 3.0 file, choose "Open" from the Visio 4.0 File menu, or double-click its icon in the Windows 95 Explorer (or the Windows 3.x or NT File Manager).

To save a Visio 2.0 or 3.0 file you opened in Visio Technical 4.0, choose "Save" from the File menu, then click the format option you want in the Save Options box. To save the file under a new name, choose "Save As" from the File menu.

----------------------------------------------------------
SAVING VISIO TECHNICAL 4.0 FILES AS VISIO 2.0 OR 3.0 FILES
----------------------------------------------------------
You can save Visio Technical 4.0 files as Visio 2.0 or 3.0 files, but if the files contain attributes specific to Visio Technical 4.0, these attributes will be lost. For example, you could create a Visio Technical 4.0 file that includes freeform curves and shapes with custom properties, such as inventory numbers, assigned (attributes unique to Visio Technical 4.0). If you save the file in Visio 3.0 or 2.0 format, the freeform curves are converted to arcs and the custom properties are lost. (For a complete list of attributes, see the listing below in this topic.)

To save a Visio Technical 4.0 file in an earlier format, choose "Save As" from the File menu, then from the "File Type" list, choose the format in which you want the file saved.

When you save a Visio Technical 4.0 file in 2.0 or 3.0 format:
Freeform curves (curves drawn with the new freeform tool) are converted to elliptical arcs and
lines that approximate the original curve.
Layer assignments are lost, resulting in all shapes being written on a single layer.
Shape actions you could choose in 4.0 by right-clicking
a shape or page are no longer available.
Custom properties you associated with shapes or pages in
  4.0 are lost.
Visio 4.0 grid and ruler settings, such as fixed grid,
grid origin, and minimum spacing, are lost.
 Control handle tips are lost.

-----------------------------------------------
VISIO TECHNICAL 4.0 AND EMBEDDED VISIO DRAWINGS
-----------------------------------------------
When you open a Visio 2.0 or 3.0 drawing embedded in another Windows application for editing in Visio Technical 4.0, the embedded object will by default be automatically converted and saved in the 4.0 format. The conversion is necessary to retain any attributes specific to the 4.0 format that may have been added to the drawing, such as custom properties or freeform curves. (See "Saving Visio Technical 4.0 Files as Visio 2.0 or 3.0 Files" above for a complete list of attributes specific to 4.0)

One implication of automatically converting the embedded Visio drawing to 4.0 format is that other users who have Visio 2.0 or 3.0 will no longer be able to open the embedded drawing for editing in those versions.

If you anticipate opening and editing Visio 2.0 or 3.0 drawings embedded in documents and need to resave the embedded drawings in their original format for users who may need to subsequently edit them in Visio 2.0 or 3.0, you can change the default behavior of Visio to retain the original format. To do so, complete the following two steps:

1. Exit Visio Technical and open the VISIO.INI file (Visio\System subdirectory) in a text editor such as WordPad or NotePad and add the following line to the [Application] section:

	RegistrationFlags=0x1D77

2. Next, re-register Visio Technical by choosing Run... from the Windows or Windows NT Program Manager File menu or the Windows 95 Start menu and typing the Visio path followed by /r. For example:

	c:\visio\visio.exe /r

After completion of these steps, Visio's default behavior will be to leave embedded drawings from Visio 2.0 and 3.0 in their original formats when they are opened and resaved in 4.0.

Note: Once this default setting has been changed, none of the Visio 4.0 attributes referred to above will be retained if added while editing an embedded drawing originating from Visio 2.0 or 3.0.

To restore the original default of automatic conversion to 4.0 format, follow the same two steps above, replacing the line in the VISIO.INI with:

	RegistrationFlags=0x1D6F

Note: This issue of format conversion applies only to OLE-embedded Visio drawings. Visio drawings that have been linked are saved as independent files. Please see "Opening and Saving Visio 2.0 and 3.0 Files in Visio Technical 4.0" above for more information.

"Visio 2.0 and 3.0 embedded drawings" include those originating from Visio 2.0 and 3.0, Visio Express 2.0 and 3.0, Visio Technical 3.0, and Visio Home 3.0.

--------------------------
WORKING WITH AUTOCAD FILES
--------------------------
* There are two ways to work with AutoCAD drawings in Visio Technical: as Windows metafile images or as converted drawing files. Creating a metafile is fast, but the resulting image is not editable in Visio. You can, however, use it as a background by dropping and drawing shapes directly on top of the metafile image. Converting an AutoCAD .DWG file to a Visio drawing takes significantly more time, but results in a fully-editable drawing complete with related master shapes.

* Blocks in AutoCAD do not support special characters in their names, so special characters in Visio masters will be replaced by underscores when saved.

* The following list shows which AutoCAD entities are supported when converting a .DWG file to a Visio drawing:

AutoCAD Entity Supported?
-------------- ----------
Point Yes
Line Yes (all linetypes)
Arc Yes
Circle Yes
Polyline Yes
Trace Yes
Solid Yes
Text Yes
Block Yes
Dimension Yes
Shape No
3D Face No
Viewports No
CSG Solids (AME)	No
NURBS (AutoSurf)	No
Paperspace No

----------------------------------------------
SAVING VISIO DRAWINGS WITH PREVIEW PICTURES
----------------------------------------------
Visio Technical 4.0 includes the option to save a preview picture of the first page of any drawing or template. The Save Preview Picture option in the Save As/Properties dialog is checked on by default.

Saving a preview picture with a Visio Technical 4.0 drawing or template can increase the file size and time required to save. If you do not wish to save preview pictures with your Visio drawings, you can manually uncheck the option each time you save a new file or change the default setting so that it will always be unchecked.

To change the default setting, exit Visio and open the VISIO.INI file (Visio\System subdirectory) in a text editor such as WordPad or NotePad and add the following line to the [application] section:

	NewFilesSavePreview=0

To restore the default setting to always check the Save Preview Picture option, replace the value "0" with "1".

----------------------------------------------
USING WINDOWS 95 "QUICK VIEW"
----------------------------------------------
The Windows 95 Quick View accessory allows you to preview Visio Technical 4.0 drawings or templates that have been saved with a preview picture without actually running Visio Technical. To preview a Visio Technical drawing using Quick View, click on a drawing in My Computer or Windows Explorer, and then choose Quick View from the File menu.

Note: If Quick View is not available when you have a Visio Technical 4.0 drawing selected, the accessory is not currently installed on your computer. Quick View is not installed with the "Typical" Windows 95 Setup option. Look under "installing, Windows components" in the Windows 95 Help Index for more information on adding programs after installation of Windows 95.

----------------------------------------------
QUICK TOUR CONFIGURATION RECOMMENDATIONS
----------------------------------------------
The Quick Tour was developed using Macromedia Director and requires at least 4MB of RAM and at least a 2MB swap file.

VIDEO CARDS
Macromedia Director requires video software drivers and hardware that fully support Windows 3.1 or later standards.

Note: If you experience video display difficulties running the Quick Tour, first test it under a display mode that provides 640 x 480 resolution and 256 colors. It may also be appropriate to contact the manufacturer of the video card to determine whether there is an updated display driver.

FONTS
The Quick Tour requires these Windows System Fonts on your computer:
Times New Roman
MS Sans Serif

----------------------------------------------
USING VISIO TECHNICAL 4.0 WITH LOTUS NOTES 3.X
----------------------------------------------
If you are using Lotus Notes 3.X workstation software under a 32-bit operating system (Windows 95 or NT), you will need to install the 16-bit version of Visio Technical in order to exchange field data between Notes and Visio Technical 4.0. For instructions on installing 16-bit Visio Technical in a 32-bit operating system, see "Installation of 32-bit or 16-bit Visio Technical 4.0" above.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTALLING THE VISIO BUTTON ON THE MICROSOFT WORD OR EXCEL TOOLBARS
-------------------------------------------------------------------
You can install the Visio toolbar buttons manually by double-clicking VISIOMSO.XLS (for Excel 5.0 and 7.0) or VISIOMSO.DOT (for Word 6.0 and 7.0) in your Visio\System\Custom directory. Or, you can add a Visio drawing to Microsoft Word or Excel by choosing Object from the Insert menu.

The macros to install toolbar buttons are provided only for Word and Excel. Visio 4.0 does not include a macro for PowerPoint because PowerPoint does not provide the functionality Visio requires to customize the toolbar.

For more information about installing a button on a toolbar, refer to your Word or Excel documentation. To customize the appearance of the Visio button, edit the file VISIOMSO.BMP in the Visio\System\Custom directory.

Note: The Visio toolbar buttons simply provide a one-click method by which to embed a Visio drawing into these applications. The same action can be completed by using an application's "Insert Object" command.

--------------------------------------------------
INSTALLING THE VISIO SMARTICON ON THE LOTUS 1-2-3,
AMI PRO, OR FREELANCE GRAPHICS TOOLBARS
--------------------------------------------------
If you did not install the Visio SmartIcon, you can copy the Visio SmartIcon files to the appropriate Lotus SmartSuite application directory.

To install the Visio SmartIcon in Lotus 1-2-3 (release 4 or 5), copy these files from the Visio\System\Custom directory to the 123rX\PROGRAMS\SHEETICO directory:

	VISIO123.SMI
	VISIOLSS.BMP
	VISIOLSS.MAC

Then, choose SmartIcons from the Lotus 1-2-3 Tools menu. In the SmartIcons dialog box, choose VISIO in the drop-down list box.

To install the Visio SmartIcon in Ami Pro 3.0, copy these files from the Visio\System\Custom directory to the AMIPRO\ICONS directory:

	VISIOAMI.SMI
	VISIOLSS.BMP

Copy the VISIOAMI.SMM file to the AMIPRO\MACROS directory. Then, choose SmartIcons from the Ami Pro Tools menu. In the SmartIcons dialog box, choose VISIO in the drop-down list box.

To install the Visio SmartIcon in Freelance Graphics 2.0, copy these files from the Visio\System\Custom directory to the FLW\ICONS directory:

	VISIOLSS.BMP
	VISIOFLW.SMI

Then, choose SmartIcons from the Freelance Graphics Tools menu. In the SmartIcons dialog box, choose VISIO in the drop-down list box.

For additional information about installing a SmartIcon, refer to your Lotus SmartSuite documentation.

Note: The Visio SmartIcons simply provide a one-click method by which to embed a Visio drawing into these applications. The same action can be completed by using an application's "Insert Object" command.

----------------------------------------------
VISIO TECHNICAL SETUP AND THE SHARE COMMAND
(For Windows 3.x installations only)
----------------------------------------------
Visio Setup checks for whether SHARE.EXE or VSHARE.386 is loaded on your system and installs SHARE.EXE if neither is present. (If you are running Visio under Windows for Workgroups or if VSHARE.386 is already loaded on your system, the SHARE command is not required.) You are prompted before the SHARE command is added and given the option to have setup make the necessary changes to your system automatically.

Although SHARE is not required to start and run Visio Technical 4.0, it is required for many critical functions, most notably saving drawing files in the 4.0 or 3.0 formats. In addition, if some form of SHARE is not loaded, you may encounter error messages in other Windows applications that support objecting linking and embedding (OLE) when attempting to perform common functions related to OLE.

----------------------------------------------
VISIO TECHNICAL AND WINDOWS REGISTRATION
----------------------------------------------
When you install Visio Technical, information about its capabilities are registered in the Windows 3.x Registration Database or the Windows 95/NT Registry. If you suspect that Visio Technical is not properly registered (for example, if Windows displays an error message saying it cannot find the source application when you double-click an embedded Visio object in another application) you can force the registration process by choosing Run from the Windows 3.x or Windows NT Program Manager File menu or the Windows 95 Start menu and typing the Visio path followed by /r. For example:

	c:\visio\visio.exe /r

If Visio Technical displays error messages under Windows 3.x indicating that OLE2 might be improperly registered, you can register it manually by using the Microsoft Registration Information Editor:

Note: The instructions below for manually registering OLE2 apply only to Windows 3.x. We advise you to refer to your Windows 95 or Windows NT documentation for information on modifying the Registry.

1. Choose Run from the File menu in Program Manager or the Windows 95 Start menu and type "regedit" at the prompt to launch the Microsoft Registration Information Editor.

2. Choose Merge Registration File from the File menu.

3. Choose the OLE2.REG file from your Windows\System directory and choose OK. (The OLE2.REG file is located in the main Windows directory on the server if you are running a shared copy of Windows on a network.)

4. Choose Exit from the File menu to exit Regedit.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
USING VISIO TECHNICAL 4.0 WITH HEBREW OR ARABIC VERSIONS OF WINDOWS 3.11
------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are running Visio 4.0 under the Hebrew or Arabic version of multilingual Windows 3.11, you will need to add a setting to force Visio not to use its own custom information in the default common dialog boxes (Open, Save, and Print) provided by these versions of Windows.

To add this setting, exit Visio and open the VISIO.INI file (Visio\System subdirectory) in a text editor such as WordPad or NotePad and add the following line to the [application] section:

CustomCommonDialog=0

Visio's custom information in these dialogs is minimal, so there will be only slightly less functionality.

Setting the value back to 1 (default) tells Visio to again use its own custom
information when displaying these dialog boxes.

----------------------------------------------
IMPORTING AND EXPORTING NON-VISIO FILES
----------------------------------------------
The ImageMark filters used by Visio Technical for importing and exporting other graphic file formats do not support Universal Naming Convention (UNC) file paths. When importing or exporting graphics files over a network, you must map a drive to the location of the file being imported or to the destination of a file being exported. For example:

	- Importing a file from \\Server\Share\xyz.cgm will result in an error.
	- Importing a file from N:\xyz.cgm will work properly.

----------------------------------------------
SCREEN IMAGES AND IMPORTED EPS FILES
----------------------------------------------
EPS files have two parts: The PostScript code used to print the image and an optional screen image used to display the image on the screen. When exporting EPS files, most graphics applications either automatically include a screen image or give you the option to include one. If you are given the option and you plan to use the EPS file in a Visio Technical drawing, you should include the screen image (which is sometimes referred to as the TIFF preview). Otherwise, the EPS image may not be correctly displayed in or printed from Visio Technical.

----------------------------------------------
CD ROM RELEASE NOTES
----------------------------------------------
The CD ROM Version of Visio Technical includes online versions of Visio Technical documentation as well as Acrobat Reader 2.0. Acrobat Reader must be installed on you hard disk before you can view the online documentation. Acrobat Reader does not support Windows NT 3.51.
