Manual Errata
DigiPhone 1.01 contains a 4 page Errata in addition to the User Manual. Please refer to the
errata sheet prior to installation.

This File
This file contains late-breaking information for the DigiPhone software. Consult
this file for installation hints and other tips that will enhance your enjoyment of DigiPhone.

The Main Program Menu
When DigiPhone is started, it minimizes itself to an icon on your screen. Click once on the icon
to bring up the program menu.

Placing A Call
Bring up the program menu and select the "Place Call" command. As a shortcut, you can double
click the icon and the call dialog interface will immediately pop up.

DigiSock
DigiSock is located on the floppy diskette labeled "Accessories." The manual incorrectly states
that DigiSock is also located on the CD-ROM.

Mail Server Address
The mail server is the computer your mail program connects to when you send and receive
Email. The mail server address tells the DigiPhone software the location of your mail server in
order to send notifications to someone you attempted to call, or to send global phone book
queries. Your mail server address will look something like mailhost.mynet.net or
111.222.333.444. If you have a working Email program, you will probably find this information in
the program's settings under a topic like SMTP Server or POP3 Server or Mail Server. If you
don't have a working Email program or can't locate the address of the mail server in its settings,
contact your Internet service provider for the information.

Sound Blaster 16 or 100% compatible Users
If during installation you selected 100% Sound Blaster 16 Compatible sound card as the type of
sound card you have, DigiPhone installed a special sound driver that allows you to use your
sound card in full duplex mode. Activate the Automatic Gain Control setting in the Creative
Mixer application, then increase the Record Gain setting to increase the quality of the voice
connection.

IP address ranges in the Advanced Direct Dial Configuration
DigiPhone will allow you to call another party by that party's Email address. However, due to the
wide variety of Internet connection configurations available, this feature may not always be the
best way to place a call using DigiPhone. If the party being called can't be reached by their
Email address, their IP address (four 1-3 digit numbers seperated by periods) range can be
entered instead. The Email address field must be filled in as well.

If they use a dynamic IP connection where their IP address changes each time they connect to
the Internet, enter the lowest and the highest IP address they can receive when a connection is
established. If they use a static IP address that never changes, enter a small range that contains
the static IP address you are calling. Once these fields have been entered, do not edit them
during the same Internet session.

Example 1 - Dynamic IP Connection: If the lowest IP number they will receive when they connect
is 20.20.20.0 and the highest number they will receive when they connect is 20.20.20.255,
use these values for the low and high fields, respectively.

Example 2 - Static IP Connection: If they always receive the same IP address of 20.20.20.5,
enter 20.20.20.0 in the low field and 20.20.20.10 in the high field.

* You will have to obtain this information from the party you are calling.

** In order to successfully complete a call, the name that you enter for a party in your
DigiPhone Book must EXACTLY match the name that party entered for themselves when
they installed DigiPhone (or the name they set in the Connection Settings dialog after
installation). These fields are case sensitive.

Permanent Connection Settings vs Temporary Connection Settings
When DigiPhone is started, it minimizes itself to a small icon on the screen. You change the
permanent connection settings by clicking on the icon and selecting the "Connection Settings"
command. The information you set here is saved when you exit the program. When you are
placing a call ( by double clicking on the icon ) you can also make changes to the connection
settings by selecting the Settings menu pulldown at the top of the call dialog interface and then
selecting the "Connection" command. The settings you change from the call dialog interface are
temporary and only last until you close the call dialog interface. This allows you to make
changes on a per call basis without permanently storing the settings.

Tips for using DigiPhone
If you open the DigiPhone book and only the first piece of someone's email address is visible,
close DigiPhone and restart and the rest of the email address will become visible.

When cancelling a call attempt, the Connecting indicator light will continue to blink yellow
for a few moments. Please wait until the light stops blinking and indicates No Activity before
closing the Main interface.

When you hang up after a conversation, DigiPhone waits for the other party to acknowledge the
disconnection event.

If you wish to use Encryption, activate Standard Encryption before placing the call. Do not
attempt to dynamically change the Encryption mode during the conversation.

The Increase and Decrease volume commands in the Settings menu in the Main interface are intended
for fine tuning the volume only. Most sound cards ship with software designed to optimize sound
quality. We recommend that you optimize your sound device using the sound card manufacturer's
software before attempting to adjust the volume within DigiPhone.

Tips on setting the Voice Activation level (VOX)
The Voice Activation level (VOX) control allows you to instruct DigiPhone to automatically stop
recording when the input volume falls below a certain threshold and then start recording when
the volume rises above the threshold. This feature allows you to make efficient use of your
connection bandwidth. If you notice that some of the caller's words are being slightly clipped off
at the beginning, have the caller turn down the VOX level until the clipped speech returns to
normal. On the other hand, if you notice too much background noise when the caller isn't
speaking, have the caller turn the VOX level up. Disable or enable the VOX before you place a call.
If the VOX has been enabled prior to the call, you can adjust the setting during the call. Before
placing a half duplex call with VOX enabled, we recommend setting your VOX level to 5.

Tips for half duplex operation
DigiPhone gives you the option of talking in half duplex mode using either automatic activation or
manual activation. If the VOX feature is disabled, DigiPhone uses manual activation and if the
VOX feature is enabled, it uses automatic activation. In manual activation mode, you have to
press the Talk button before you say anything to the other party and you have to press the Listen
button when you are finished talking and are ready for their response. In automatic activation
mode, DigiPhone will use the VOX level to sense when you want to talk and will automatically
return to listen mode when you stop talking. Before placing a half duplex call with VOX enabled,
we recommend setting your VOX level to 5.

Tips for performance tuning over a modem
DigiPhone allows you to dynamically adjust its recording and playback quality in response to the
speed of your modem connection. You adjust the quality by selecting the Settings menu and
then selecting Connection. In general, the higher the speed of your modem connection, the
higher you can set the sampling rate. Start by connecting at the default sampling rate. Then,
increase the sampling rate on the Connection Settings dialog by 500 (the increments can be
smaller or larger depending on your preference) and press OK to close the dialog and
acknowledge the change. DigiPhone will renegotiate the connection at the higher sampling rate.
Continue to increment the sampling rate as previously described until the other party's speech
begins to break up. Then back down until it is clear again. The sampling rate can be set from
4000 to 44000, depending on the capabilities of you sound card. Here are some starting points:

	Connection Speed	Sampling Rate
	9600 bps 4000
	14400 bps 6000
	19200 bps 8000
	28800 bps 11000

Tips for sampling rates over a LAN
If you are using DigiPhone to talk with others over a LAN, for best quality you can turn the
compression off in the Connection Settings dialog and use higher sampling rates than what is
possible over a modem connection. However, the higher the sampling rate you use, the more
your conversation will slow other network traffic down. In most cases, you will be more than
satisfied with compression enabled and the sampling rate adjusted to an acceptable level of
quality.

Tips on using Global Phone Book Queries
The manual incorrectly depicts the Global Phone Book Query dialog as having drop down lists
from which to pick the query parameters from. The drop down lists were removed in order to
allow for more flexibility when requesting a phone listing. If you want to allow all matches on a
particular field, enter an asterisk * in that field. For example, if you wanted to find all names
listed for Alabama ( abbreviation AL ), enter a * in the Last Name Alpha field, a * in the Country
field, a * in the Time Zone field, and AL in the State field.

Notes on Internet Signal Traffic
During peak times of activity, the Internet will be heavily loaded with signals traveling from one
point to another. This heavy load could introduce a delay between the time you speak and the
time the party on the other end of the line hears you. The delay will decrease as the signal traffic
on the Internet lessens. As a result of heavy traffic, you may also notice some clips in speech. If
this occurs, open the Connection Settings dialog box and reduce the sampling rate until smooth
speech resumes.

Optional files located on the CD-ROM
The CD-ROM contains sound files and wallpaper bitmaps that were not copied to your hard disk
during installation. The wallpaper bitmaps are in the subdirectory \WALLPAPR and the sound
files are in \RINGERS. The sound files are provided to allow you to change the sound DigiPhone
makes when an incoming call occurs. In the directory where DigiPhone is installed there is a
file called RING.WAV. In order to change the incoming call sound, simply copy the sound file
you want to use to the directory where DigiPhone is installed and rename it RING.WAV (you will
have to change the name of the existing RING.WAV to something else before you can rename
the file you copied).
