  BEFORE INSTALLING THE TRANSLATION ASSISTANT

  1. IMPORTANT: If Microsoft Windows is installed in a write-protected network
directory, a person with write privileges to the Windows directory should install
this product. If you choose to install system files in an alternate directory,
then the installation has to be completed manually.

  2. Review the Product Release Notes, if any, for special instructions pertaining to
the installation of this product. The Release Notes are in the file RNOTETA4.WRI
       on the CD-ROM.

  3. Be sure that no other programs are running, except for Program Manager and
File Manager. If other programs are running, especially Powersoft products or
       Watcom SQL, exit them now.

NOTE: During installation you may not be prompted for every disk path in the set.
The disk paths the Setup Program requests depend on the options you select.

TO INSTALL THE TRANSLATION ASSISTANT FROM DISKETTES

  1. Insert the diskette labeled "Translation Assistant Disk 1 of 3" into the floppy drive
       of your computer.

  2. Run the SETUP program on the diskette in one of the following ways.
(This example uses Drive A--your floppy drive may be a different letter.)

           * From Windows Program Manager, choose File>Run and type: A:\SETUP
           * From Windows File Manager, double-click SETUP.EXE on Drive A

TO INSTALL THE TRANSLATION ASSISTANT FROM THE CD-ROM

Run SETUP.EXE in the root directory of the CD-ROM and select
Translation Assistant for PowerBuilder from the list of products.

  CHOOSING WHAT TO INSTALL

Read the following descriptions of the selections:

           * Translation Utility: Installs the development tool needed to
translate PowerBuilder libraries into other languages. XLUTIL.EXE
is a PowerBuilder application itself and therefore requires a
runtime. You may use an existing PowerBuilder runtime or install
               the Runtime Environment included below.

           * Multilingual Development: Installs INTERNAT.PBL which includes
two user objects with functions for managing multiple languages
and externalized text messages. Include this in the library path
               of your multilingual applications.

           * Multilingual Demo: Installs a test program which uses
INTERNAT.PBL to call the multilingual user object functions.

           * Runtime Environment: Installs a standard PowerBuilder 4.0.03 runtime
environment needed to run the Translation Utility. This should
only be installed if you do NOT already have PowerBuilder 4.0
installed. It will be added to your DOS PATH.

           * Multilingual Sample Application: Installs a simple master/detail
PowerBuilder application built with dynamic multilingual
capability for English, Spanish and French.

The Advanced button allows you to specify alternate directories for files
that need to be installed in the Windows and Windows System directories.

  DURING INSTALLATION

The installation procedure will prompt you:

           * When the procedure is ready to update your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. You can
choose to let the installation procedure change the existing file, create a
new file for you, or proceed without making any file changes. Your
AUTOEXEC.BAT is not modified when installing only the ODBC Interface.

           * If you install the Translation Utility, a entry will be made in the Windows
ODBC.INI file for the Translation Dictionary, a WATCOM database file called
PBXLDICT.DB. Also, an entry is made in WIN.INI in the [TRANSLATION] section
to include the path to XLUTIL.INI.

  AFTER RUNNING SETUP

  1. Exit to DOS and verify that the directory for the PowerBuilder Deployment Kit
is included in your DOS PATH command and that your PATH command does not
exceed 128 characters. This will happen automatically if you let the installation
procedure update your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the previous step. The DOS
PATH is only modified when installing the Runtime Environment files because they
can be referenced in an existing PowerBuilder directory.

  2. Reboot your PC and start Windows.
