README file for expanding and preparing RSA Secure
for installation

You have decompressed eight files:

  - READRSA1.TXT (this file)

  - LICENSE.TXT and LICENSE.WRI (the License Agreement
for RSA Secure, in both text and Windows Write format)

  - LOADRSA.BAT (a batch file for the default installation)

  - MANINSTL.TXT (instructions for installations that
don't fit the defaults), and

  - RSA_EVL2.EXE (the executable file containing all of
the RSA Secure program and help files)

  - READMEVL.TXT (the "readme" file that is copied onto
the disks)

  - ORDERFRM.TXT (an order form for you to send in to
order a commercial copy of the software)

1. You should print and read one of the LICENSE files and
agree to the conditions in it before proceeding.

  - IMPORTANT: If you make copies of this software for
others, you must provide them with the RSA_EVAL.EXE file
intact, not with any subset of the decompressed files.

  - EXPORT RESTRICTIONS: This version of RSA Secure has
been tailored to meet United States regulations for the
export of cryptographic software. This means that the
level of encryption has been reduced from 80-bit RC4 and
1024-bit RSA keys to 40-bit RC4 and 512-bit RSA keys. The
stronger encryption is available only in the commercial
version that is sold in the USA and Canada. The
commercial version that is sold for use outside of the USA
and Canada uses 40-bit RC4 and 512-bit RSA keys, as this
product does. Both commercial versions come with a
printed User Guide, a printed Quick Reference Guide, and
full product support.

  - DISK SPACE WARNING: The one-megabyte file that you
downloaded has expanded to over TWO megabytes, and will
grow to four before the expansion process finishes. Make
sure you have sufficient space available before continuing.

2. ALL INSTALLATIONS should begin by creating five
formatted high-density floppy disks, labeled as shown
below. Prepare them now. Labels: "Emergency Access
Manager"; "User Setup Disk"; "User Setup Customized Disk";
"Emergency Backup Disk"; and "User Backup Disk" (NOTE: By
"label" we mean the physical label attached to the
disk.)

3. If you plan to install RSA Secure on your C: drive and
create your installation disks on your A: drive, you
should use the LOADRSA.BAT file, which defaults to those
drives. At the DOS prompt, in the directory in which
RSA_EVL2.EXE resides, type "loadrsa" (without the quotes)
and press the <Enter> key.

4. If you plan to install RSA Secure on a drive other than
C: or plan to create your installation disks on a drive
other than A:, you should print out and follow the
instructions in the MANINSTL.TXT file, and review the
REAMEVL.TXT file for any last-minute changes.

5. Once you have completed your installation, you may
delete the \RSA\EMRIMAGE\DISK1 and \RSA\USRIMAGE\DISK1
directories, as well as the RSA_EVAL.EXE and RSA_EVL2.EXE
files.

6. COMPATIBILITY

RSA Secure has been tested and is certified to work with:
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or better
- Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or better
- Microsoft memory-management software, e.g., EMM386.EXE
and HIMEM.SYS (other memory management software has
been tried and seems to work fine, but has not been
  tested extensively)
- Program Manager as the Windows shell (again, other Windows
shells have been tried successfully, but not tested
  extensively)

Minimum configuration includes:
- Intel 80286 microprocessor
- 2MB of RAM
- VGA video

Recommended configuration includes:
- Intel 80386/33 MHz microprocessor
- 4MB of RAM or more
- Two-button mouse

RSA Secure does not run under Windows NT. It runs under
Windows 95 as a File Manager menu choice, just as it does
under Windows 3.1, with file names limited to 8-character
names and 3-character extensions. A later release will
support long file names.

UPGRADE INFORMATION: Users who purchase the commercial
version of RSA Secure get the following benefits:

- GREATLY INCREASED SECURITY (in the US and Canada):

80-bit RC4 keys for the encryption of files. This
increases file security to the point where it is estimated
that it would take 70 trillion MIPS-years to break the
key. RC4 is the industry standard for stream encryption.

A 1024-bit RSA public-private key pair for Emergency
Access protection. Again, this is as strong as it gets.
