1. INSTALLATION NOTES
============================================================

1.1 Disk Storage
------------------------------------------------------------
To successfully install the software you will need a hard disk
with at least 5 megabytes of free disk space.

1.2 Not Enough Disk Space
-------------------------------------------------------------
The ScanMan installation program copies several files to your
Windows directory. If you have less than 500 kilobytes of free
disk space on the drive where Windows is installed, the install
program displays an error message asking for more disk space on
the drive.

When you run Windows in 386 Enhanced mode, Windows uses some disk
space for its temporary files, so the amount of disk space
available is less than what you had before starting Windows. To
check to see whether you have enough disk space for the
installation, you should run File Manager under Windows and
ensure that you have 5 megabytes of free disk space.

1.3 Decompressing Application Files Manually
------------------------------------------------------------
To maximize disk space, several files on the installation disk
have been compressed. These files must be decompressed before
you can use them. The INSTALL program automatically decompresses
these files during installation. However, should the need arise,
we have provided a method for you to manually decompress these
files. Compressed files have file names that end with "%". To
decompress a file manually, use the LGEXPAND.EXE utility provided
on the installation disk.

For example, to decompress the file "FTCOLOR.EX%" and copy
the decompressed file to your hard disk, type

        lgexpand A:\FTCOLOR.EX% C:\FTCOLOR\FTCOLOR.EXE

Please make sure that the destination directory (C:\FTCOLOR in
this example) exists before you issue this command.

1.4 Update Windows 3.0 System Files
------------------------------------------------------------
When installing the ScanMan Color software under Windows 3.0, the
WINHELP.EXE program and its associated help file WINHELP.HLP are
updated to support features used in the FotoTouch Color help
file. The Install program will save the old files as
WINHELP3.EXE and WINHELP3.HLP respectively.

1.5 Norton Desktop 1.0
------------------------------------------------------------
If you run the FotoTouch install program and the Program Group
box is dimmed, cancel the installation dialog box. From the
Norton Desktop window, choose Preferences from the Configure
menu. Enable the Quick Access on Startup option. After you click
OK, choose Save Configuration from the Configure menu. You can
now install FotoTouch Color.

To ensure that FotoTouch Color is added to Quick Access, make
sure that the Save Configuration on Exit option in the Configure
Preferences dialog box is enabled.

2. TECHNICAL NOTES
============================================================

2.1 Compatibility
------------------------------------------------------------
2.1.1 Color Video Boards
The MonaLisa video board has a problem with non-rectangular
selections in 24-bit mode. Updating the driver may correct this
problem.

The Farenheight 1280 version 2.0 driver may cause strange
behavior with freehand selections. We recommend that you contact
the manufacturer to get the version 2.1 (or later) driver.

2.1.2 TWAIN
The ScanMan Color Image Source, supplied with the FotoTouch Color
software, works with all applications that comply with the TWAIN

FotoTouch Color works exclusively with Image Sources that have
"through memory transfer" support, such as Logitech's ScanMan
Image Source and Hewlett-Packard's Deskscan Image Source version
1.5.2 or later. You can obtain an update for the Deskscan Image
Source by contacting Hewlett-Packard's customer support at
(208) 323-2551.

2.1.3 OLE
With OLE support, you can use Line Art, Gray Scale, and Color
images in other OLE applications and benefit from FotoTouch
Color's displaying and printing capabilities.

We have tested how FotoTouch Color works with a specific set of
applications. In certain cases we found problems that cannot be
addressed from an OLE server perspective. Logitech is working
with these applications' vendors and will provide updated
information when available.

The results of our tests are as follows:

Microsoft Windows Write 3.1
Microsoft Publisher 1.0
Microsoft Works
These applications work well with no existing problems to
    our knowledge.

AmiPro 3.0
Color and Gray Scale images may display poorly in 256-color
display mode. The 32768 and 16-million color modes should
work well and have screen gamma correction. Printing, except
for Line Art images, seems to depend on the particular printer
and driver; printer calibration is not available.

Microsoft Word for Windows 2.0
Microsoft Excel 4.0
Microsoft PowerPoint 3.0
These applications always force FotoTouch Color to render OLE
objects as DIBs (Device Independent Bitmaps), preventing the
FotoTouch OLE object handler from optimizing image display
and printing. The result is slow handling of Gray Scale and
Color images, poor image display in 256-color display mode,
and no screen gamma correction or printer calibration.

Aldus Persuasion 2.1
CorelDraw 3.0
In 256-color display mode (since the program uses the color
palette) Gray Scale and Color OLE images from FotoTouch
don't display as well as in FotoTouch. However, printing
    quality is not affected.

FotoTouch Color objects are processed differently with a
Paste and with a Paste Link. With a Paste, the image is
displayed and printed by FotoTouch Color. With a Paste
Link, the image is handled directly by CorelDraw (unless the
image was saved as a JPEG file) and image updates are slow.

Microsoft Windows CardFile 3.1
Images display correctly. However, you can only print Line Art
    images.

Note: Some OLE clients may not always repaint a linked document
after it has been changed. To force a repaint, you can minimize
and then restore the application.

2.2 Upgrades
------------------------------------------------------------
2.2.1 Windows 3.0 Printer Drivers
These drivers in general need to be upgraded to the latest driver
supplied by the printer manufacturer.

2.2.2 Windows 3.1 Printer Drivers
These drivers generally work well, but may not fully implement
all of your printer's features. We recommend that you use the
latest driver supplied by the printer manufacturer.

2.2.3 HP Deskjet 500C
To print in color you must install the printer driver provided by
Hewlett-Packard. If your driver has a version number older than
3.0, we recommend that you contact HP to order a newer version,
which will correct compatibility problems with Windows 3.1. The
new driver can be obtained free of charge by calling their
customer support at (303) 353-7650. Due to the technology used
by the 500C to reproduce black by mixing red, green and blue
inks, you may experience difficulty when printing images with
dark shades.

2.2.4 Tektronix Phaser III
To print in color with the Windows 3.1 Postscript driver you
should open the Print Control panel and choose Setup, Option,
Advanced, and select the Compress Bitmap option. Installing the
Tektronix Postscript driver will allow you to use your printer's
additional advanced features.

If you print a large image with the printer's FinePoint feature
enabled, it will produce a series of horizontal white stripes.
Tektronix will provide a new driver that corrects this problem;
their customer support number is (800) 835-6100.

2.3 Ran Out of Memory
------------------------------------------------------------
If you get the "Ran out of memory" message, there are three
things you can do to remedy the problem:

1) Scan a strip which uses less memory.
You can do this by scanning a shorter strip or narrower strip, or
by using a lower resolution setting.

2) Free memory and/or hard disk space.
FotoTouch Color and ScanMan Color use both memory and the hard
disk to temporarily store the strips. To calculate a rough
estimate of the size of each strip, refer to the "Tips &
Techniques" section in the ScanMan Software User's Guide.

3) Exit FotoTouch Color and restart it.
Exiting deletes any extra resources used by FotoTouch Color and
ScanMan, thus freeing some memory. After you exit, restart
FotoTouch Color and retry the operation that caused the "Ran
out of memory" message.

2.4 Disk Maintenance
------------------------------------------------------------
2.4.1 Image Swap Files
Both the FotoTouch Color and the ScanMan software use temporary
image swap files to store information. Each program uses two
swap files: a primary and a secondary swap file.

The drive for the primary temporary swap file is obtained from
Windows. It is the drive specified by the "TEMP=xxx" DOS
environment variable, or the root directory of C: if TEMP is not
defined.

Normally, the drive for the secondary swap file is selected by
looking on drives C: through H: for the largest free space on a
drive different from the one used for the primary swap file.
Removable or network drives are not considered.

You can control the directory used for the second swap file by
setting the "temp2" variable in the appropriate .INI file.
FotoTouch Color uses the "temp2" variable in WIN.INI, while
ScanMan uses the "Temp2Path" variable in SCANMAN.INI. Both the
.INI files are found in your Windows directory.

To set the "temp2" variable for FotoTouch Color, modify the
WIN.INI file with a text editor such as Windows Write (or, under
DOS 5.0, EDIT). At the end of the WIN.INI file put the following
lines:

        [Logitech FotoTouch Color]
        TEMP2=(drive and directory)

for example,

        [Logitech FotoTouch Color]
        TEMP2=C:\
or
        [Logitech FotoTouch Color]
        TEMP2=C:\TEMP

To set the "Temp2Path" variable for ScanMan Color, modify the
SCANMAN.INI file, and search for the "Temp2Path" variable near
the beginning of the file. It looks like

        ;Temp2Path=c:\

Remove the semicolon and change the directory to what you want.

Note: It is important to keep a large amount of empty disk space
in both the "temp" and "temp2" drives.

2.4.2 Clean-up after Unexpected Termination
In case FotoTouch Color or ScanMan Color unexpectedly terminate,
exit Windows. Look for temporary swap files that FotoTouch Color
or ScanMan Color may have created on your hard disk. These files
are named: "~ANSxxx.TMP" and "~FTCxxxx.TMP", where xxxx is a
random sequence of numbers and letters. They will be found in
the directories used for image swap files (see above). Delete
these files.

In addition to deleting the files, run the DOS command CHKDSK to
check for and close any files that the application's termination
possibly left open. To run CHKDSK, at the DOS prompt type the
following:

        CHKDSK /F

Refer to your DOS manual for more information on the CHKDSK
command.

2.5 AutoStitch Scanning Tip
------------------------------------------------------------
If you cannot merge images successfully, try putting a cross mark
(at least 1/2 inch tall and wide) at the top and at the bottom of
the image. Place the cross marks in the area where the two scan
strips overlap each other. After the strips are merged, use
FotoTouch Color to crop the cross marks.

If you cannot merge landscape images successfully, try scanning
them in portrait mode. Changing the orientation could change the
distinct features found in the overlap area and help the ScanMan
software to merge the strips.

Please refer to the ScanMan Software User's Guide for multiple-
strip scanning guidelines.

2.6 Printing Calibration Charts
------------------------------------------------------------
When you print a calibration chart using File/Calibrate/Printer,
you should print the chart on the same paper that you intend to
use for your final document. Different papers reflect and absorb
light differently, so if you print the calibration chart on one
kind of paper and the document on another, the results may not be
optimal.

2.7 File Format Technicalities
------------------------------------------------------------
2.7.1 JPEG limitations
FotoTouch Color cannot save or export a document in JPEG format
(extension *.JPG) if its width exceeds 1200 pixels.

2.7.2 TIFF Default Resolution
If you save or export a document with no resolution in TIFF
format (extension .TIF), the document will be saved at a
resolution that is 1/4 its larger dimension, so that the document
size is 4 inches.

2.8 Undocumented Feature
------------------------------------------------------------
As a prize for people who read this far, here's an undocumented
feature of FotoTouch Color: Clicking the right button on the
title bar of a document window changes the size of that window to
fit the document. Note that this feature has the opposite effect
of the Fit To Window command, which changes the size of the
document to fit the window.

2.9 Abort While Saving
------------------------------------------------------------
Please be aware that if you abort while Saving a document to the
same name, the original document will be lost. You must Save the
document again before closing it, because FotoTouch Color will
not ask you whether you want to save or discard it.

3. APPLICATION NOTES
============================================================
3.1 Windows
------------------------------------------------------------
3.1.1 Desktop Wallpaper
If you want to use a BMP file to display as wallpaper in Windows,
and you have a 256-color display driver, then you should export
the BMP file as an 8- or 4-bit color or grayscale document.

3.1.2 Speed Warning Beep
Under Windows 3.1, the default beep sounds for the speed warning
even though you have assigned this via the control panel. If you
have Wired for Sound loaded, the beep will not sound for the
speed warning. This prevents conflicts between the scanner and
the sound driver.

3.2 WordPerfect 5.1
------------------------------------------------------------
WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows does not support 24-bit color files.
To import color images into WordPerfect 5.1, export them from
FotoTouch Color as 8-bit BMP files.

3.3 Norton Desktop 2.0
------------------------------------------------------------
The ScanMan software may hang if you run under Norton Desktop 2.0
in Windows 386 enhanced mode. If you run into this problem, you
must modify the NDW.INI file, found in your Windows directory.
Search for the line
        Int21hHook=1
in the [NHookSettings] section. Change this line to read
        Int21hHook=0
Alternatively, you could run Windows in standard mode.

4. SYSTEM HARDWARE NOTES
============================================================
4.1 ScanMan Color Time-out
------------------------------------------------------------
The time-out value for the ScanMan Color Scanner is 60 seconds.
This feature turns the scanning light off after 60 seconds have
passed without any activity, in order to prolong the life of your
scanner.

4.2 Memory Managers and Windows Standard Mode
------------------------------------------------------------
The ScanMan software will not run in Windows standard mode if a
memory manager such as QEMM386.SYS, EMM386.EXE, or 386MAX.SYS is
loaded. Either run Windows in 386 enhanced mode, or remove the
memory manager from the CONFIG.SYS line.

is created upon exit. This file contains information about
FotoTouch Color's configuration.

Additionally, when you calibrate your printer, the file
        C:\WINDOWS\FTCOLOR.PCF
is created. This file contains the information necessary to
calibrate your printer.
