DATACARD QUIKWORKS PRINTER FANOUT CONTROLLER VERSION 2.00 README.TXT
====================================================================

INTRODUCTION
------------

This file is the readme file for the DataCard QuikWorks Printer
Fanout Controller (PFAN.EXE). This is a program which automatically
cycles through a list of QuikWorks card printers as print jobs are
sent to the Windows 3.1 Print Manager. This program will only work
with Windows 3.1, and will only work with QuikWorks version 2.0.

The purpose of this application is to allow automated simultaneous
output on an arbitrary number of printers (two is expected, but more
are fully supported). This application will only cycle the QuikWorks
card printer (not the Windows default printer or any other printer
setting).

WHAT IT DOES
------------

Whenever a new card print job is submitted to the Windows Print
Manager, PFAN makes a new printer the next QuikWorks card printer.
The next time a card print job starts, the new card printer setting
will be used.

There is a list box on the main window of the Fanout application
which indicates the order in which the printers will be cycled
through. This is the Auto-cycle list box. You can click on any printer
in the list to manually indicate that this is the next one you want to
be used. Note that the highlighted printer will be used for the NEXT
card print job.

INSTALLATION
------------

The Fanout Controller must be installed using the Setup program. Do
not attempt to install it manually.

CONFIGURATION
-------------

Configuration consists of selecting the printers the PFAN utility will
use to cycle through. Run PFAN, click Configure Auto-cycle list,
and highlight the printers you want PFAN to cycle through. Click OK when
you have chosen all of the printers you want in the Auto-cycle list.

Note that you cannot control the order in which PFAN cycles through
the printers.

Note that there is an Auto-cycle check box right on the main window.
When the check box is checked, the PFAN utility will auto-cycle print
jobs. When the check box is unchecked, the PFAN utility will not auto-cycle
the print jobs. This allows rapid selection of a printer and disabling of
auto-cycle at the main window.

Note that configuration settings are stored in a PFAN.INI file. All
PFAN.INI settings are set through the user interface, so there should
be no need to manually edit PFAN.INI.

BUGS, ANOMALIES AND HELPFUL HINTS
---------------------------------

1. When the Fanout Controller first starts, it will not be able
to tell you how many print jobs the Windows Print Manager
is currently processing. The Windows Print Manager sends out
notifications of its status only as its status changes (e.g.,
new print jobs come in or old ones are completed).

Once the Windows Print Manager status changes, the Fanout
Controller will display the correct number of print jobs.

2. If the PFAN.INI file (which should normally be in your Windows
directory after you first run PFAN.EXE) is marked read-only,
no settings will be stored and you can expect anomalous
behavior. No error messages will be presented in this case.
