BETA TESTING GUIDE - PerfectWorks for Windows
=====================================================================

Welcome
=======

Thank you for agreeing to participate in the PerfectWorks for
Windows beta. We appreciate your efforts and believe with your help we
will achieve our goal to produce and market a world-class product.

Purpose of Beta Testing
=======================

The beta test process helps WordPerfect, Novell Applications Group
(WordPerfect) determine the quality of a product before it is released.
From a list of volunteer beta sites, we select a group representative of the
target market to help us find additional problems our users may encounter
when doing their everyday work. You were selected to help us with this
process.

During the beta phase we primarily look for problems in the program as it
is currently designed. Beta testing is not intended for redesigning the
software. However, this does not mean that your ideas cannot be
incorporated into the initial release or a future release.

What Is in it for You
=====================

Beta testers who successfully complete the Beta Testing Program will
receive the item(s) described in Exhibit A of the non-disclosure agreement.
In addition, they have the opportunity to directly communicate with
WordPerfect Development and influence the final product.

Beta Tester Responsibilities
============================

Expectations
------------
Installation Each shipment of beta software must be installed as soon as
possible and a verification message sent to the beta coordinator in charge
of the project.

Confidentiality All information pertaining to the beta test (e.g., product,
documentation, etc.) needs to be kept confidential and treated with the
same level of protection as you would give your own confidential
information.

Weekly Communication We require beta sites communicate with
WordPerfect weekly through CompuServe or e-mail. If you are unable to
report weekly, send a message to the beta coordinator letting them know
why you will not be reporting or withdraw from the beta if necessary.

Electronic Communication Because of the difficulty in supporting
multiple users, WordPerfect uses CompuServe and e-mail to handle
communication with beta test sites. When submitting problem reports, it is
essential to report through these electronic methods.

Reporting Problems Included on the Essential Materials Disk is a
problem reporting mechanism that must be used when submitting problem
reports. Please see the Reporting Procedures section for more
information.

Note: No beta software is problem free. We encourage you to save your
documents often. Important documents should not be entrusted to beta
software.

Beta Shipment
=============

Our goal is to send regular updates of the software. There will be times
when intervals between updates are longer than others. You will be notified
as new beta updates become available. The following items will be included
in each beta shipment:

Program Disk Includes all files necessary to install and execute the
program.

Essential Materials Disk This disk(s) has all the necessary files and
documentation to help you install and test the product.
Reporting Procedures

Once a beta report is submitted, it is reviewed by the beta coordinator and
forwarded to development. If your report does not contain the necessary
information to duplicate the submitted problem, the report will not receive
approval to continue through the testing process from the beta coordinator.
If your report is returned, there will be a comment outlining why the report
was not approved and what is needed before testing can resume.

What to Do When You Find a Problem
==================================

Before creating a problem report, it is necessary to determine the
conditions needed to duplicate the problem. Troubleshooting is a way to
help you find these conditions. Listed below are general troubleshooting
steps to help you narrow down the problems you discover before they are
reported.

1 Can you duplicate the problem consistently? Include step-by-step
    directions on how to duplicate the problem.

2 Did it ever work (i.e., did an earlier release work differently)?

3 Can you duplicate the problem from a clear screen? To do this, exit the
    program completely, start it again and try to duplicate the problem.

4 Can the problem be isolated? Occasionally, problems are specific to a
    certain code or combination of codes.

5 Are you running any TSRs (Terminate Stay Resident) or other
    programs while testing the software? If yes, try running the program
    without them to see if the problem still exists.

6 Is it hardware-related? Does the problem occur on another machine?

7 Is the problem eliminated if the program is run without any
    modifications to the default settings?

Creating a Problem Report
=========================

When submitting a beta report, the following information needs to be
included: your name, release date, feature, perceived priority, filename (if
applicable), summary, and description. A reporting mechanism will be
included on the Essential Materials Disk to assist you when reporting
problems.

The following are general guidelines to be used when creating a report.

1 Report only one problem per record, even if you find two or more
    problems with the same feature. If more than one problem is submitted
    in a single report, only the first problem will be tested.

2 Enter a one to two sentence description of the problem. This
    description should be concise and give a general idea of the problem.

3 Include a file (if applicable) with the report which demonstrates the
    problem.

4 Be clear and concise. Before uploading your report, read through it to
    determine if someone else could reproduce the problem with the
    provided information.

5 Report all problems. If you find a problem that you cannot reproduce,
    report it anyway. If enough of these phantom problems are reported,
    we might be able to see a pattern develop.

6 When using the Problem Reporter to create reports, save your problem
    reports in the default compressed (ziped) file format to send them to
    WordPerfect.

Sending a Problem Report
========================

If your method of electronic communiction during the beta test is through
CompuServe, you can send problem reports from within the WPBETA forum.
Address your reports to the WordPerfect Testing account number (72460,461)
and either upload or send them to the Section 11 "Library" (not the message
area). Section 11 has been assigned to the PerfectWorks for Windows beta test,
in CIS it listed as (Win Works).

If your method of electronic communication is through the Internet, you
can send your problem reports to betarep@Orem.Novell.com

Sending General Comments and Discussion Issues
==============================================

To send a message from within the WPBETA forum, address them to the
WordPerfect Testing account number (72460,461). (Please refer to
Appendix A of this handbook for the section assigned to PerfectWorks
for Windows.) The WPBETA forum on CompuServe is a private forum which
allows users to send messages directly to WordPerfect or other beta
test sites. The contents of the messages are open to anyone in the
forum. You may address them to the beta coordinator (SysOp) or to
other beta sites on your beta test section of the forum. Private
messages and CIS Mail messages have also been enabled. When you send
a message privately, or by CIS Mail, only the person you send the
message to is able to read the contents.

If you have an Internet account, you can send a message directly to the
beta coordinator. (Please refer to Appendix A of this handbook for the
beta cordinator's internet address assigned to PerfectWorks for Windows.)

Be sure to include one of these program names in the Program Field
when creating a problem report.

Program names used for PerfectWorks in the Problem Reporter utility are:
