FIntroduction to Saucer Crashes F FNothing in the history of Ufology has fired the imaginations Fof people all over the world more than the discovery of Fcrashed vehicles which appear to be extraterrestrial in Forigin. Although many reports of crashed saucers have Fturned out to be downed conventional aircraft or meteorite Fimpacts, there are some reports which indicate that at least Fa few reports of recovery of debris from an alien ship may Fbe genuine. The famous Roswell, NM crash has for decades Fbeen shown to be both real and a hoax by various Finvestigators and it has only recently come to light that it Fmay have been real. Another crash at nearby Aztec, NM, Fhowever, is most likely a hoax. Is the United States Fgovernment in possession of alien spacecraft? Has some alien Ftechnology been incorporated into the latest advanced jet Ffighters as some have alleged? The world may never know. FThis section deals with some of the reports of crashed alien Fcraft. F/ FBOL 1979 Andes Mountains F FThere is a report of a giant fireball of some type crashing Finto the top of a mountain in Bolivia in 1979. There is no Fdirect evidence that this was a flying saucer which crashed. FThere is not even any corroboration that this occurred in FBolivia. F/ FUSA 1948 Aztec, NM F FThe report of a crashed flying saucer near Aztec, New Mexico Fin 1948 is generally regarded as a hoax. It gained Fpopularity in part because of its proximity to the crash at FRoswell, NM. The vehicle was allegedly retrieved by the FU.S. Air Force and measured approximately 100 feet in Fdiameter. The outer shell of the ship did not have any Fseams or welded joints. There was also a report that small Falien bodies were recovered from the crash sight. Again, Fthis tale is almost certainly a hoax and may have been Fpurpetrated by someone within the UFO research community. FAn alternative solution to this report is that it was spread Fby members of the government involved in the recovery of a Fcrashed saucer near Roswell, NM. The Aztec report which may Fbe false was created as a smoke screen to help throw off Finvestigators looking into the Roswell incident. F FIn another version of the Aztec story, three independent Fradar units picked up an object falling toward the earth. FWhen the craft did not answer attempted radio contact, the Flocal military was contacted. A message was then sent to Fthen Secretary of State General George C. Marshall who Fordered that a search party be sent from Camp Hale in FColorado to investigate. According to William S. Steinman Fthe helicopter team found the remains of the object on a Frocky plateau northeast of Aztec. The scientists then F"broke in" to the craft through a porthole and managed to Fopen a door whereupon they found two small charred bodies Fof crewmen. One of the team members, a Dr. Dtley W. Bronk Fallegedly examined the bodies. It was later reported Fthat the bodies were sent to Wright-Patterson Air Force FBase where they are maintained in cryogenic suspension. FThe bodies were supposedly wearing blue metallic uniforms Fand the disk was stored in Hangar 18. F FAgain, this story is almost certainly a hoax. F/ FUSA 1947 Socorro, NM F FAt about the same time that a crashed saucer was being Frecovered at Roswell, another crash or possibly part of the Fsame crash was being reported about 2.5 miles away, nearer Fto Socorro, New Mexico. As a team of Army personnel raced Fto the crash site, civilian surveyor Grady L. Barnett along Fwith a small group of archaeologists came across the scene. FWhat they found was reported years later after the death of FMr. Barnett by a friend he had confided in by the name of FL. W. Maltais. What they had found was described as a large, Fgrey metallic object lying up against the top of a ridge. FIt seemed to be some kind of personnel pod which was lying Fopen with four bodies on the ground near it. The bodies Fwere about four feet tall with large heads and thin arms and Flegs. they were clothed in one-piece metallic suits with no Fzippers, buttons or fasteners of any kind. As the soldiers Farrived on the scene, they quickly cordoned off the area Fand swore all of the witnesses to secrecy. This might case Fcould easily be labelled a hoax or misidentification if not Ffor a few pieces of furhter information. In 1989, a nurse Fin a Florida hospital reported that a terminally ill patient Fhad told her an amazing story: In the late 1940's the woman Fhad been a student archaeologist at a dig in New Mexico and Fhad witnessed a crashed spaceship and the small bodies of Fits crew. Further corroborative evidence was provided in F1990 when another of the archaeologists came forward. He Ftold about being on a dig in New Mexico when he had Fapproached the site by car. As he crested a small rise he Fsaw what he first took to be a crashed aircraft. As he Fdrove near, he realized what he was seeing was not from this Fplanet. He reported only three bodies, but described the Fsame type of silvery, one-piece suit as Mr. Maltais. FTaken individually, these reports might seem like fantasies. FTogether, however, they paint a picture of an incredible Fevent. Was this crashed object the escape pod of the ship Fthat went down near Roswell? Or, is it possible, as has Fbeen suggested in recent years, that two craft collided in Fmidair during the thunderstorm and both crashed to Earth? F/ FRUS ???? Later than Fevening during a severe thunderstorm, a sheep rancher named FMac Brazel who lived a few miles northwest of town heard a Ftremendous explosion that drowned out even the thunder. The Fnext morning, Mr. Brazel found a large amount of wreckage Fincluding fragments of a thin, foil-like metallic substance. FBy some accounts, he found a nearly intact saucer as well as Fbodies of small aliens with large heads. This latter is Fpossibly hearsay and may have been added to the story much Flater. The thin metal substance was fascinating to Brazel Fas he was able to wrinkle or crease it and in a few seconds Fall by itself, it would flatten out to its original shape. FIt is reported that he kept a few small pieces of this Fmaterial. Upon returning to his home, Brazel contacted the FChavez County Sheriff's office which alerted the Roswell FArmy Air Field. Army Major Jesse A. Marcel was one of the Ffirst officers to see the field where the wreckage was found. FWhat he found at the ranch was described during interviews Fin 1978. There was a 500 foot long gouge in the earth and a Flong field of dull grey metallic wreckage. The wreckage Fitself consisted, among other things, of lightweight metallic Fstruts and beams as well as another sort of thin sheetlike Fmetal which seemed nearly indestructible. Major Marcel Fpersonally saw some kind of geometric design or writing Fimprinted on some of the wreckage. He said it was "nothing Ffrom this Earth." As much of the wreckage which could be Fcarried was loaded into the Army vehicles and carted back Fto the Air Base. Upon examination, Colonel William FBlanchard ordered the public relations officer to release Fthe following statement on the morning of July 8th: F"The many rumors regarding the flying disks became a reality Fyesterday when the intelligence office of the 509th Bomb FGroup of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field was Ffortunate enough to gain possession of a disk through the Fcooperation of one of the local ranchers and the sheriff's Foffice of Chavez County." The press release went on to Fsay that the wreckage had been taken to the Roswell base and Fbeen examined by technicians before being sent on to Fhigher authority. FSoon after, the Roswell area was flooded with phone calls Fas well as people from all over the world. In response to Fthis rush of curiosity, Eighth Air Force Commander Brigadier FGeneral Roger Ramey held a press conference in Forth Worth FTexas where the debris was sent from Roswell. In an effort Fto quell the excitement over the find, General Ramey stated Fthat the Army did not, in fact, have the remains of a flying Fsaucer. What they did have, he said, was the remnants of Fa weather balloon, specifically a corner reflector used to Fcalibrate radar systems which had come down during the Fstorm. Even as this press conference was going on, the Ffield on the Brazel ranch was being searched with a fine- Ftoothed comb by a swarm of Army personnel and every tiny Fscrap of wreckage was being recovered from the site. To Fthis day, even a highly sensitive metal detector will find Fnothing. Mr. Brazel was taken into the Roswell base for Fseveral days and interrogated at length about the incident. FWhen he was finally able to return home, he was visibly Fdrained and shaken. General Ramey, meanwhile, had clamped a Ftight seal of security on the entire affair and all of the Fwreckage was forwarded from Fort Worth to Wright Patterson FField in Ohio. Major Marcel was told never to reveal Fanything he had seen or learned about the incident. FApparently, the crash touched off a brush fire which burned Fa forty acre area. During this time, a large UFO "flap" was Foccurring in this area of France with many reports of flying Fsaucers coming in daily. In a completely unrelated report Fwhich surfaced some time later, the crash was confirmed by Fnumber of witnesses in a nearby town who saw a large red- Forange, fiery disk crash into the side of a mountain. Among Fthese witnesses were farmers, a local news reporter and the Fson of a mayer of another town. A member of a French Fintelligence agency stated later that "something" was Freceived by the Gendarmerie and shipped in a truck to Paris. Graves was getting ready to go on a Fhunting trip with his friends in Paradise Valley, Arizona. FHe soon found out that the spot they had chosen to go Fhunting had been restricted by th U.S. Air Force. Graves Ftook it upon himselve to still go. He found a spot where Fhe could watch all activities going on in the spot they were Fto be at. He saw a rather large, dome-shaped aluminum craft Fthat was about 36 feet wide. The military had it surrounded Fwith tents. Graves sat and watched the activities around Fthe craft for about 12 hours. FHe did not seen anything that resembled a human body or an Falien body for that matter. Graves believes that the mili- Ftary covered up alot of the items that were found at the Fcrash. He also believes that they changed the topography Fof the area so that it would be difficult for anyone to Ffind this location, trying to keep it a secret. He had told him of a lady who worked Fin the Pentagon in 1952 who had seen an alien body that was F'pickled' in a tank made of glass. The room was marked off Flimits, but she mistakenly entered the room. She was Fimmediatly taken away from the room to sign some documents Fstating that she was sworn to secrecy. Timothy Good had Fcontacted this lady who was still working for the govern- Fment. He had asked her if she would be willing to talk Fabout the incident that happened several years ago. Un- Ffortunatly, she was not able to speak of this. He came Facross a former Marine who had stood guard at a military Fbase where a disk-shaped vehicle with ovoid cross section Fthat was 40 feet across and 13 feet thick. FThe marine had signed a security oath. He stood guard for Ftwo weeks where he observed a technical crew, that spoke in Fcode, trying to get into the craft. The marine spoke as if Fhe knew more of the crash findings, but was unable and Fafraid to speak of them. FThe farmer was taking a walk like he would take every night. FHe was walking across his some 400 acre farm when he Fnoticed a circle burned out. This circle was about four Ffeet in diamater and located in a grassy field. This is Falso where he had found the skeletal remains which he Fthought were of an alien life form. These skeletons were Fabout four feet tall, had a large skull, a jaw like a cat, Fwith a barrel-like rib cage. They had long arms with only Fthree fingers on each hand. FNext, the doctor called the sherriff. The sherriff, Fwithout hesitation, called the Air Force. FFirst thing the next morning, the doctor woke up to find Fa large amount of people doing tests on the soil and Fremoving any and all evidence that anything had happened Fin that field. FA colonel had taken the farmer to the military base and Finterrogated him harshly. They needed to know what he had Fseen. They had also shown him pictures of other alien Flife forms to compare to what he had seen. The farmer Fnever spoke of his experience after this. FThis crash was discovered by Norwegian jet fighters who Fwere flying near Himlopen Straits. They started having Fradio interference and then they had seen a large blue disc Flying on the snow. This disc was taken in to the Norwegian FAir Force. Reports say that this object was about 125 Ffeet in diameter, having a plexiglass dome and the rest of Fit being made of some kind of metal. No alien life forms Fwere found with this saucer. It had 46 high powered Frotating jets. This disc was taken apart and shown to have Ftraveled approximatly 18,000 miles and it was able to carry Fexplosives safely. FThis report was never corroborated. Some say that this may Fhave been the Soviet Unions attempt to create a flying Fsaucer, which is something that they had been working on at Fthe time. The Norwegian government has denied all knowledge Fof this crash. FReports are conflicting on just what occurred on that night. FThe official report made by the Deputy Base Commander, FLieutenant-Colonel Charles Halt, states two security police Fwitnessed lights outside the back gate and called for permission Fto investigate on the grounds that an aircraft might have Fcrashed. A glowing object, triangular in shape, about 9 feet Fwide and 6 heet high, and emanating a powerful white light was Freported seen by three patrolmen. The UFO was either hovering For standing on short legs as the patrol approached. The UFO than Fmanoeuvred away slowly through the trees on to a nearby farm Fbefore disappearing very quickly into the sky. The object was Fsighted again about an hour later. FThree ground traces indicating possible landing leg depressions Fwas found the following day upon investigation of the crash Fsight. FOther stories of events from that night included one that the Foverall Commander of the base, Wing Commander Gordon Williams, was Fpresent at the investigation and communicated with aliens that Fhad been seen apparently carrying out repairs to the craft. FMany films and photographs were allegedly taken; but, these were Fall confiscated by senior officers and have not been released. FJohn Burroughs and a second airman who remains anonymous have Fstories which basically agree with the Deputy Commander's Fstatement; however, they deny seeing aliens but saw shapes inside Fthe object which approached within three feet and commented, 'I Fdon't know what they were but the shapes did not look human. FMaybe they were like robots.' FSergeant Adrian Bustinza, one of the security police at FWoodbridge, described the object as being seen through a yellow Fmist like 'nothing I have ever seen before'. Sergeant Bustinza Falso commented that it was a tremendous size compared to the Fclearing it was in and that he was surprised it was able to fit Finto the area. FAllegedly a tape recording made by Lieutenant-Colonel Halt and Fhis men while in the forest investigating the event describes Fwhat they are supposed to be seeing as they pursue the object Fthrough the woods. FFormer Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral-of-the-Fleet Lord FHill-Norton challenged the events of the evening to the FSecretary of State for Defence, Michael Heseltine who released Fthe statement through Lord Trefgarne 'the events to which you Frefer were of no defence significance'. FThere would seem to be some defence significance in an unknown Fobject's entering and landing in British territory or a base Fcommander of an RAF/USAF base filing a make-believe report. F"Project Mogul" was a secret government venture to develop Fballoons to carry remote sensing equipment high into the Fatmosphere in an attempt to detect Soviet nuclear tests. FAt the time of the discovery of the wreckage, the Army released Fa statement that there had, in fact, been a crash of a UFO Fon the Brazel ranch. Then, shortly afterward this report was Fcountered by a news conference in which it was stated that the Fwreckage was that of a weather balloon or, more accurately, a Fcorner reflector used to calibrate radar systems. This Fseemed a reasonable explanation except for the fact that Army FMajor Jesse Marcel was convinced that he had seen debris which Fcould only had come from a downed UFO. In 1978, Major Marcel Fwent public, stating exactly what he had seen and that he Fbelieved that he had seen the remains of a crashed space Fvehicle of extraterrestrial origin. This crash may or may not be more than it Fseems. According to witnesses, the Air Force cordoned off Fthe area and combed the surrounding woods for debris. A Flarge object was carted away and may have been seen later Fat Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, OH. The Fobject itself was acorn shaped and apparently quite large. FIt is possible that what struck the earth was the remains of Fthe Soviet Kosmos-96 satellite which was a probe bound for FVenus that failed to fire its booster engine once in orbit Fand subsequently came down that day. According to Air Force Finformation, however, the satellite had come down some 12 Fhours later in another part of the world. There is some Fdissention among experts as to what actually occurred here. FThe equipment capsule of the Soviet probe was acorn shaped Fand quite large and may have been what hit. However, there Fis the Air Force data to contend with - it shows that the Fobject could not have been the probe and in some way, the FUSAF may be trying to purposefully give the impression that Fit was a real UFO crash. Why would the government do this? FIn 1991, the Pittsburg Press, a local newspaper, decided to Ftry and verify the Air Force information. Reporters obtained Fsketchy data regarding the orbital position of the probe Fwhich may or may not confirm the Air Force data. It is Fimpossible to tell whether the object which crashed to Fearth was the failed booster, the probe itself or some other Fspace junk. The actual probe could possibly have landed near FKecksburg. If it really was the probe, why did the Air Force Fmislead the public about it? The answer may lie in the fact Fthat at the time, the U.S. was intensely interested in any FSoviet space hardware. If word got out that it was a UFO, Fthen the Soviets would have no idea, the UFO community could Finflate the story and use it to fuel the fire of alleged Fgovernment cover-up and government scientists could examine Fthe probe in secret. If the goverment is in the business of Fusing UFO crashes as a cover for top-secret hardware failures, Fthen is it possible that the Roswell crash really was a downed FProject Mogul balloon train that the Air Force did not want Fthe Soviets to know about? F/ F/
