SETUP ON SHARP 6700 & 6800 NOTEBOOKS & OTHER SYSTEMS WHERE BIOS
                         DOES NOT SUPPORT PRELOADING

      BACKGROUND

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) of some computers does not
support preloading any compression drivers, including Stacker.
Microsoft has reported this incompatibility with the following
computers (this is not a complete list):

      Sharp models 6700, 6781, 6785, 6800 and 6881
      Cannon C-200 M-50
      Computers using a Microsolutions Compaticard
      Positive Computers
      Snap-On Intel 386 and Intel AboveBoard 2.0
      Some AEG Olympia 386SX Laptops
      Some older ACER machines
      Texas Instruments (TI) Travelmate 2000
Zeos 80386 with an AMI BIOS dated 09/15/89

During Setup on these systems, your computer may hang during
restart and Setup will not finish.

      SOLUTION

Read through these directions completely before proceeding.

       1. Make a bootable DOS disk. If you have MS-DOS 6.0, see page
178 of the DOS User's Guide for instructions on making a boot
disk. Test the disk to make sure it works before proceeding.
This disk must not try to mount any Stacker drives.
       2. Back up your data. Stacker is safe, but before making any
major system change it is prudent to have a current backup.
       3. Put the Stacker CD-ROM into its drive and type
                      drive:\STACKER\SETUP /-LZS
and press <enter>. If you are installing Stacker from Windows,
open the Program Manager's File menu and choose Run. Then type
           in the command above.
       4. After Setup copies the Stacker files to the hard disk, the
system will reboot (restart) to disable memory-resident
programs. Use the procedure below to restart without
           hanging.
       5. Restart your system without Stacker. There are two ways to
           restart.
           a. Insert your DOS startup disk and restart your system.
           b. Rather than booting from a startup disk, you may be able
to unload Stacker by pressing and holding the CTRL-ALT-SHIFT
keys right after the diagnostic beep, then ESC to cancel
installation. If your timing is right, Stacker will not load
and you may proceed with the steps below. If not, simply use
           the boot disk.
       6. Go to drive C and change to the Stacker directory. Type: ED
           /I <enter>.
       7. Press <enter> to insert a blank line. Add the statement "/-
LZS" on this line by itself. Do not type the quotation
marks. Press CTRL-Z to save the file.
       8. Remove the boot disk from drive A and restart your system.
           Setup will now continue.
       9. After Setup compresses the drive, it will restart to mount
your new Stacker drive. Use the procedure in step 5 to
           restart without hanging.
       10. Go to drive C and change to the Stacker directory. Type: ED
           /I <enter>.
       11. Press <enter> to insert a blank line. Add the statement "/-
LZS" on this line by itself. Do not type the quotation
marks. Press CTRL-Z to save the file.
       12. Remove the boot disk from the A drive and restart your
           system. Setup will now complete.
       13. Please note that each time your system restarts during Setup
it hangs unless you use the boot procedures above. If you
run Setup on more than one drive, or use a Custom Setup, you
may experience additional restarts. If so, simply follow the
procedures above to restart the system without Stacker, edit
the STACKER.INI file to restore the "/-LZS" expression, and
restart. Setup will continue normally. After Setup is
finished, the system will no longer hang at restart.
