To all that it may concern:

I have watched with much interest how some people in this newsgroup go through
fantastic moral contortions to justify 'pirating' aka stealing.

Let's start with the bloody obvious: Pirating software is wrong -- and
particularly in the case of ID, who have been so VERY nice to us.

For those of you who are morally deficient (or just plain stupid) the
simple logic is:

1) People have to have an incentive to make ANYTHING COOL. In this case, the
support is money: ID gets money to make more software, which we enjoy.

2) Pirating destroys that incentive. It subtracts from this revenue, and
undermines the ability of ID to make a product (be it DOOM or QUAKE).

But worse: it erodes the trust of the ONLY MAJOR GAME MANUFACTURER that has
bothered to listen and incorporate the concerns of its customers into its
software. And some bastards even brag about this (what assholes)!

However -- being realistic, I believe that the above argument will probably
change no one's mind, which is really a shame. So --

If an appeal to just plain human decency won't work, maybe this will:

We can beat piracy, by the sheer number of us who appreciate the great service
ID has done for us.

I know a few pirates who --like me-- love doom, and have even downloaded a
copy of Doom II. But even they have changed their mind in the case of ID
-- and have given me the name of ftp sites and BBS's that contain pirated
software knowing I have full intentions of reporting these sites to the SPA
(for BBS's), Novell's piracy hotline, the BSA, CERT (for the internet),
and the local police department of that BBS (for quick action).

Furthermore, I am going to report the BBS's and internet addresses at staggered
intervals, so that my friends are protected..

If you want to help -- do one of two things:

    1) do the same thing yourself -- the number for the SPA (software
publishers association) 1-800-9557721, Novell's Piracy hotline is
   1-800-PIRATES, Cert's address is at root@cert.org.

    2) tell me what you know, and *I'll* get the ball rolling. I would do for
you exactly what I would do for my friends -- protect their identities.

Right now, this address is good for me -- I'll post a revised version of this
note later on (from a different address, to nullify killfiles and to hopefully
make just ONE pirate feel guilty) to let people know exactly how the saerch is
going (and encourage further action..).

Anyways, if you need more information, contact the SPA, Novell's piracy hotline,
CERT, or me at peschko@mermaid.micro.umn.edu for more information on what you
can do, and hopefully we'll kick some serious ass.

Cheers,

Ed

(PS: believe me, I *do* believe that it is unfortunate that it had to come to
this... but then again, in a perfect world, people would behave perfectly..)

(PPS: flames to peschko@mermaid.micro.umn.edu will be rapidly quenched, esp.
'You stupid netcop!' ones.)

(PPPS: If you actually have the game DOOM II on your disk-drive -- for GOD'S
SAKE DELETE IT AND WAIT TO BUY IT OCTOBER 10th!!! For me, one of the great
joys is PURCHASING the game and knowing that I have invested some effort into
getting it... Pirating it would make just 'another game'.)
