2/14/64 - Ski Jump
Ralph Crane

At the Winter Olympics at Innsbruck, Austria, a skier soars from the Bergisel jump and seems for an instant to hang almost motionless against the Nordkette mountain range. There were 1,350 athletes from 36 countries competing for the gold. Jeannie Saubert, the U.S.'s strongest hope, was third in the slalom and tied for second in the giant slalom. A junior at Oregon State, she hopes to join the Peace Corps. But a Michigan 23-year-old barber named Terry McDermott cracked a speed-skating record to win a first in the 500-meter race. Back home, he had trained on frozen baseball diamonds.
