Images of unfettered grace and implacable ferocity, the great cats of Africa have for centuries been as much admired as feared, inspiring that awe reserved for unearthly mysteries.  The biggest enemy of this black leopard, a creature of nocturnal stealth who hunts quarry up to three times his size, and usually alone, is civilation, now slowly but relentlessly crowding the wild animals of Africa toward confinement in game preserves.
