ABSTRACT:

This document contains information regarding the following Novell DOS 7 update
files: CHKDSK.EXE, DPMS.EXE, EMM386.EXE, HIMEM.SYS, IBMDOS.COM, MEMMAX.COM,
NWCDEX.EXE, and SETFIFO.EXE. Items marked with an asterisk (*) indicates

contains information regarding the following Novell DOS 7 update files:
CHKDSK.EXE, DPMS.EXE, EMM386.EXE, HIMEM.SYS, IBMDOS.COM, MEMMAX.COM,
NWCDEX.EXE, and SETFIFO.EXE. Items marked with an asterisk (*) indicates
FILES, SYMPTOMS and/or SOLUTIONS which are new to this update.

SYMPTOM

CHKDSK is not compatible with Stacker 4.0 drives.

SOLUTION

Overwrite the CHKDSK.EXE file in the NWDOS directory with the new CHKDSK.EXE
file. This version of CHKDSK.EXE includes a /NS command line parameter to
instruct CHKDSK to not do internal Stacker checking on a Stacker 4.0 drive.

SYMPTOM

Speed issues with the NWCDEX CD-ROM extension driver.

SOLUTION

Overwrite the NWCDEX.EXE file in the NWDOS directory with the new NWCDEX.EXE.
This is the German version of NWCDEX that may help with some speed issues that
are encountered.

SYMPTOM

Users may experience minor problems with the DPMS.EXE file that ships with
Novell DOS 7.

SOLUTION

Overwrite the DPMS.EXE file in the NWDOS directory with the new DPMS.EXE.

SYMPTOM

Loss of characters and speed of transmission issues during serial
communications.

SOLUTION

Use SETFIFO.EXE. This utility allows the user to set FIFO buffers of 1, 4,
8, or 14 bytes. This may solve both speed and loss of characters issues during
serial communications--possible only on a 16550 UART chip.

SYMPTOM

Minor problems may occur with NE2100 cards.

SYMPTOM

Minor problems may occur with a second DMA controller on PS/2 and compatible
machines when channels 5, 6 or 7 are selected.

SOLUTION

Overwrite the EMM386.EXE file in the NWDOS directory with the new EMM386.EXE
file.

SYMPTOM

Some EMS page frame problems may occur with HIMEM.SYS.

SOLUTION

Overwrite the HIMEM.SYS file in the NWDOS directory with the new HIMEM.SYS
file.

SYMPTOM

Some secondary command processors (such as a DOS shell) can change the memory
state.

SOLUTION

Overwrite the MEMMAX.COM file in the NWDOS directory with the new MEMMAX.COM
file. Only the primary command processor can now change the memory state.

SYMPTOM

Accessing a Stacker 4.0 volume would cause EMM386 protection errors to occur
if users had Stacker 4.0 on their hard disk before installing Novell DOS 7.

SYMPTOM

 A double \\ appearing with NetWare 4.x LOGIN.EXE.

 For example: "D:\\filename.ext"

SYMPTOM

The system sometimes reads beyond the end-of-chain when corrupt directory
entries are encountered.

SYMPTOM

The key combinations of ALT-T and ALT-Q not working correctly with the
Colorado Tape software.

*SYMPTOM

Problem with initializing IRMA 3270 emulation software by DCA.

SOLUTION

XCOPY the new IBMDOS.COM to the root directory using the /HR switch.
Then, use ATTRIB -A +R +S +H to give the file the System, Read-only and
Hidden attributes.

Example--from the command line, issue the following separate commands:

     XCOPY A:\IBMDOS.COM C:\IBMDOS.COM /HRV
     ATTRIB -A +R +S +H C:\IBMDOS.COM

Installation Instructions:

Make a backup copy of each file being replaced before copying the new file in
to that same directory. The integrity of any file can be verified by
comparing the file's checksum with the above information. To calculate the
checksum of any file, use the Novell DOS 7 command XDIR <filename.ext> /C
from the command line.
