To install the Assessment Exams on a hard disk using the
included Setup program:

	a. Load Windows 3.1 or higher
NOTE: Microsoft Windows 3.1 is required.

	b. Insure that you can access the disk or drive
	    containing the Microsoft Certified Professional
Assessment Exams program and exam files.

	c. Run SETUP.EXE from Program Manager or File Manager.
SETUP.EXE will copy the necessary files to your
disk and create a Program Manager group.

	d. Once SETUP.EXE has completed, you may execute the
assessment program by clicking on the Assessment
Exams Program Item, or by running the LNCHTST.EXE
program from the File Manager or Program Manager.

Do not directly execute the WTDP.EXE program.

To install the Assessment Exams on a hard disk using the
expand file method:

		LNCHTST.EXE
		LNCHTST.HLP
		LNCHTST.INI
		WTDP.EXE
		WTD.HLP
		WTDFONT.FON
		README.TXT (optional)

	c. Expand the following files to the CPASMT directory
by using the EXPAND.EXE from MS-DOS.

	    by running the LNCHTST.EXE program
from the File Manager or Program Manager.

Do not directly execute the WTDP.EXE program.

2. Using the Assessment Exams
------------------------------------------------------------
To become a Microsoft Certified Professional you must pass a
series of standardized exams which reflect your knowledge
and skill in planning, implementing, and supporting
solutions with Microsoft products. The Microsoft
Certified Professional Assessment Exams are designed to help you
evaluate your knowledge and skills prior to taking the
actual certification exams. Version 1.3 of the Assessment
Exams contains nine assessment exams:

	*  Microsoft Windows v3.1
	* Microsoft Windows for Workgroups v3.1
	*  Microsoft Windows NT v3.1
	* Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server v3.1
	* Microsoft SQL Server v4.2 Database Implementation
	* Microsoft SQL Server v4.2 Database Administration
	     for Microsoft Windows NT
	* Microsoft SQL Server v4.2 Database Administration
	     for OS/2
	* Microsoft Visual Basic for Windows v3.0 Application
	     Development

These assessment exams will also give you practice answering
questions of a format similar to those on the actual exams.
Because these assessment exams cover many of the concepts
you are required to know for certification, the higher you
score on a specific assessment exam, the closer you may be
to passing the actual certification exam. However, these
exams do not serve as actual certification exams, nor does
performance on these exams guarantee or directly correlate
to the success you may have on the actual certification
exams.

	Setting Your Name
	------------------------------------------------------
To set your name on an exam, click the Options button
on the Select a Test window. This will bring up a
dialog box that will allow you to enter your first and
last name. When you start an exam, your name will
appear in the test introduction and on any score
	reports.

	Starting An Exam
	------------------------------------------------------
To take an assessment exam, click on one of the exam
titles in the Select a Test window. Text describing
the specific exam will appear in the Description
window. To start the exam, click the Start Test
	button.

There is no time limit on the assessment exams. And,
you may repeat the assessment exams as often as you
	wish.

On-line help is always available by clicking the Help
button or pressing F1. Note that only the options
displayed on screen in the Microsoft Certification
Assessment Exams version 2.0 are available. You may
see some options documented in Help which are not
implemented in this version of the assessment exams.

	Answering Questions
	------------------------------------------------------
Specific instructions are provided for answering each
question. Read the on-screen prompts before
answering a question, to be sure that you understand
	what is expected.

If you answer a question incorrectly, you will be
given feedback indicating the correct answer. You
will be allowed to review previous questions and to
mark those you wish to review later, but you cannot
change your answer to a question after proceeding to
the next question. (You may repeat the exam if you
	wish.)

	Scoring
	------------------------------------------------------
After you end the exam, your score will be
automatically displayed. You can also check your
scores on each exam using the Scores button in the
Select a Test window. A record is kept of all the
scores for the exams you have taken.

The assessment exams are not scored as pass or fail.
The score given for each assessment exam enables you
to evaluate your knowledge and determine if additional
	study may be of benefit.

3. Overview: Microsoft Certified Professional program
------------------------------------------------------------
The Microsoft Certified Professional program identifies
technical professionals who have the expertise required to
plan, implement and support solutions with Microsoft
products. It helps individuals assess and promote their
skills, and provides a benchmark for organizations to use
when hiring technical staff, determining training needs, or
outsourcing technical services.

The Microsoft Certified Professional program offers three
certifications:

	* Microsoft Certified Product Specialists are highly
skilled at installing and supporting a specific
Microsoft desktop product, and tuning and customizing
it to meet the needs of a user or organization.

	* Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers can plan,
implement and maintain information systems with
Microsoft Windows NT and other Microsoft advanced
	   systems and workgroup products.

	* Microsoft Certified Trainers are qualified to teach
	   specific Microsoft courses, having demonstrated
their technical expertise along with their teaching
	   skills.

	* Microsoft Certification for Developers Statement of Direction

Weve received many requests to expand our Microsoft
Certified Professional program to include a certification
for developers. As a result, we have researched the needs
of our customers and partners in this area and explored
approaches to ensure validity and reliability of our
certification. We plan to formally announce our certification
for developers in the third quarter of calendar year 1994.

Exam development for this certification is already in
progress and we will be releasing individual exams as they
become available. Although passing either of these exams
does not by itself qualify an individual for Microsoft
certification, it does provide an opportunity to get an
early start on completing our developer certification
requirements. Individuals will receive transcripts from
Microsoft stating the successful completion of these
	   certification exams.

The following exams for developers will soon be released:
	   * Microsoft Visual Basic for Windows v3.0 Application
	     Development Exam (now available)
	   * Microsoft* Access* for Windows* v2.0 Application
Development Exam (available end of April)

To become a Microsoft Certified Professional, you must pass
a series of exams that validate your technical proficiency
with Microsoft products and supporting technologies. We
recommend Microsoft certification for all technical
professionals who plan, implement and support solutions with
Microsoft products. This diverse group of professionals
includes system and network administrators, support
coordinators, systems engineers, sales support engineers,
consultants, and trainers. As a Microsoft Certified
Professional you'll be recognized as a quality source of
technical information and support on Microsoft products,
have access to ongoing technical information from Microsoft,
and receive special invitations to Microsoft conferences and
events.

Information on the Microsoft Certified Professional program
can be obtained electronically from Section 1 of the "MS
Windows User" forum on CompuServe (GO MSWIN), or by calling
(800) 227-4679. In Canada, call the Microsoft Canada
Customer Support Centre at (800) 563-9048. Outside the
United States and Canada, contact the local Microsoft
Subsidiary or authorized Microsoft distributor.

4. Program Notes
------------------------------------------------------------
	a. The technical domain tested in the Microsoft
MS-DOS & Microcomputer Hardware Certification Exam
will be incorporated into the Microsoft Windows
v3.1 Administration Certification Exam during the
winter 1993 timeframe. In support of this change,
the MS-DOS certification exam is no longer a
requirement for certification. We will continue
to make the MS-DOS assessment exam available
for ongoing use as a study tool.

	b. [WIN001] Answers "A" and "C" are correct responses to
the following question in the Microsoft Windows
	    v3.1 Assessment Exam.

Which port bypasses the Windows print routine and
sends data to MS-DOS for direct routing to the
	      parallel port?

		a) LPTx.EXE
		b) COM3
		c) LPTx.DOS
		d) COM4

	c. [WINNT001] The Microsoft Windows NT System Guide,
page 143 (and perhaps other documentation) incorrectly
states that ONLY the Administrator account has
sufficient default permissions to change the virtual
memory paging size. A Power User account also has
sufficient default permissions. This information may
affect your response to a question in the Microsoft
	    Windows NT v3.1 Assessment Exam.

	d. [WINNTAS001] Answer "A" is the correct response
to the following question in the Microsoft Windows NT
	    Advanced Server v3.1 Assessment Exam.

A local path can be used for the home directory when

		A) The account is local to a Windows NT workstation
		B) The user will access the network from a MS-DOS
		    client
		C) The user will log on only from a Windows NT
		    Advanced Server
		D) The user will access the network from both MS-DOS
		    and Windows NT clients.
