NECX - readme.txt 03/02/94 Technical notes
----------------------------------------------------------

COMMON PROBLEMS:
o If running in MS-Windows, run in full-screen mode.
o Be sure that your Communications port is correct.
o Try the "Hayes Extended" modem types.
o If 9600 baud doesn't work, then select 2400 baud.
o Verify that buffers=31 (at least) and files=19 (at least) in your
	CONFIG.SYS file.
o Make sure that anti-virus software isn't being loaded from autoexec.bat
o If using SHARE.EXE, flag SDRIVER.EXE as read-only first!

BEFORE CALLING TECHNICAL SUPPORT AT 508-538-8100: (M-F, 8-5pm est)
o Be able to describe your problem clearly.
o You must be at your computer.
o Know your modem type and speed.

Minimum hardware requirements
-----------------------------

You need at least a 286 IBM-AT compatible or better computer, running DOS 3.2 or higher, with 512K of free conventional memory, and a Hayes compatible modem (at least 2400 baud). You also need at least a VGA compatible graphics adapter and display monitor.

Key optimization
----------------

The key will run faster if you have upper memory (EMS or XMS) available. To get access to upper memory, you need to load upper memory management software (such as EMM386, QEMM-386, or 386MAX) in your config.sys file. For information on using upper memory managers, see your DOS manual or your upper memory program manual.

The NECX network will always be configured to support the fastest Hayes standard modem speeds. The speed that you witness while online is determined by the speed at which your modem is set and capable of.

Modem Settings
--------------

If your modem isn't listed under the modem type list, but is Hayes-compatible WITH DIP switches, select "Hayes Basic". If it is Hayes-compatible WITHOUT DIP switches, select "Hayes Extended", which configures your modem automatically (without the need for DIP switches).

IMPORTANT: If your modem has DIP switches, be sure they are set to recognize the true states of the Data Terminal Ready (DTR) and Carrier Detect (CD) signals. Otherwise, you will have problems making and receiving calls.

Using the Key under MS-Windows
------------------------------

The Key operates in a full screen DOS shell of MS-Windows 3.x, running in enhanced mode.

Problems with Anti-virus TSRs
-----------------------------

Please remove anti-virus TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and reboot your computer before running the Key. Anti-virus software continuiously polls your computer's activity which conflicts with the TSR used by the Key to do its modem communication. The Key's TSR only loads when attempting to dial up The Desktop Channel. It is then removed when you disconnect from The Desktop Channel and return back to the Key.

SHARE.EXE / network use
-----------------------

If you have DOS SHARE.EXE loading from your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT, you may have problems running the Key unless you first flag SDRIVER.EXE as read-only. SDRIVER.EXE is located in the directory in which you installed the Key (the default is \CHANNEL). To flag SDRIVER.EXE as read-only on a non-network drive, type "ATTRIB +R CHANNEL.EXE" (without the quotes).

Please note that the Key is NOT multi-user.
