B: Making your Filex a Server
------------------------------------
Step 1: Set your Comm Settings and Modem Settings from the Remote pull-down menu (Neither
of the settings should be set to Auto for Server mode, as these are Dialing specific). If
you are using a modem, the modem MUST be connected and turned on BEFORE starting
	  the Server.
Step 2: Start the Server by pressing the Server icon or selecting Server from the Remote
			 pull-down menu.
Step 3: Add a new user by pressing the Edit Users button from the Server window. Fill in the
User-ID and Password. Make sure to give the user SOME access to one of your drives.
Remember to Save your entries. You can also enter "guest" in the user-id and "guest"
in the password and assign limited access. This will still allow unassigned users to
			 call your server.
Step 4: Close the User List window, which will return you to the Server window.
Step 5: Check mark 'Write Log to disk' box and enter a filename for the audit trail log.
Here all user activity on the server is fully documented with date and time.
Step 6: If you wish to have a login bulletin, you can create a text file named
'filex.msg' and place this file in the FILEX directory.

C: Connecting to a Remote Filex Server

G: Latest Changes Included in this Update
-----------------------------------------
- The init string database has been updated and improved.
- In the Modem Setup dialog, their is an new inactivity time setting. If you forget that you
are connected, for example, this feature will automatically hangup your modem if there is
no activity in specified period of time (default 10 mins).
- A Change File Attributes dialog has been added. When a file is highlighted, you can access
this dialog from the File Menu or by hitting the 'A' key.
- The phone book layout has been improved.
- When copying a file from or to a remote PC, you can now check radio buttons to hangup
automatically after file transfer is completed, and/or get a "beep" for notification.
These features are ignored unless file transfer is completed successfully.
- You can now give users calling your server the rights to change their own password on
the server, provided they are running this version.
- The generic "confirm" dialog box has been split into 3 dialog boxes: a confirm-delete-dir box, a
  confirm-delete-file box, and a confirm-replace-file box.
- You can now checkmark a range of files by moving the highlight box over one end of the range, and then
holding down shift while clicking on the folder portion of the other end of the range.
- Dialogs now have a new 3D cosmetic look.

Fixes
- The dir pane was improperly scrolled after creating a new directory, and it was possible to
create a directory and then have to scroll it manually just to see the new dir. This has been
  fixed.
- FILEX would not allow you to copy a directory between a remote and a local machine when the
source path and destination path were the same (eg, from local "C:\DIR1" to local "C:\" --
creating C:\DIR1, or from local "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM" to remote "C:\WINDOWS" -- creating
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM on the remote machine). This has been fixed.
- If you tried to "find again" on certain occasions if your search was incomplete,
Filex would get a GPF error. This has been fixed.

H: Manual Addendum
------------------
(Empty at this time)

I: Trouble Shooting
-------------------
NOTE: Some init string additions shown below may not be 'understood'
by your particular modem, check your modem user's manual to
make sure that any additions you wish to use are docemented.

	Standard Windows Port Settings:

	  PORT | ADDRESS | IRQ
	-------------------------------
	  COM1	| 03F8 | 4
	  COM2	| 02F8 | 3
	  COM3	| 03E8 | 4
	  COM4	| 02F8 | 3

- If you have trouble logging to a remote server make sure that you have the
  following in your Init string

	&K3	(hardware flow control on)

	&C1	(follow carrier detect)

- If you have trouble hanging up correctly make sure that you have '&D3' or '&D6'
in your Init string, under Modem Settings, from Remote on the Main Menu

- If you are having trouble connecting to a 2400 baud rate modem
and your own modem is faster, set your baud rate in the Comm settings window
to 2400 baud also... -there has been a problem with baud rate detection
  with some 2400 baud modems.

- On 2400 modems that have problems initializing or connecting (such as Packard Bell supplied)
try choosing HAYES SMARTMODEM 2400 as your modem type, this init string has been
very successful on several 2400 baud rate modems.

- Modem connects and handshakes however, cannot find Server

  Probable Cause:
Server is set to 'Carrier Detect' and Server has init that is
set for something else, possibly (&C0 or &C1).

  Solution:
  1. Check the modem manual and find out what '&C?" function allows
     for Carrier Detect.

  2. Uncheck the Carrier Detect on the Server side.

- Older Modems Connecting to Newer Modems:

Some older modems do not support error-correcting and data-compression technologies
that newer modems support. The problem is that when the newer modem tries to negotiate these,
the older modem can't figure out what that garbage is and disconnects! You can tell the
newer modem to disable this negotiation by including a &Q6 (check your manual) in the modem
initialization string, but then it won't work with newer modems like itself (now the newer
modem gets lost when it sees those strings)!

A Catch 22 that the modem community would like to solve.

- Older ZOOM 2400 baud Modems: If you can't open your COM port even though your windows
terminal can, try unchecking follow carrier detect and/or handshaking.

J: Directory Level Security
---------------------------

- Security Levels and Access Rights

Access Rights are assigned from the "Server" dialog box. When you click on "Edit Users" you
are presented with a box which allows you to Add new users or edit/remove existing ones.
In the lower right corner, you will see a scroll box which displays all of the drives
available on your system. Individual Access Rights are assigned to each user on your system.
A drive must have "Log" access to be visible to a user calling in to use Filex as
"The Worldwide Desktop". Access Rights and Passwords can be revised at any time, however,
be sure to Click on "Save" when you have completed your changes.

- Directory Level Security

Filex Version 1.0 does not assign true directory level security, however this will be supported
in version 2.0 due our in the first quarter of 1994. There is a method through DOS of
accomplishing this task through the use of the SUBST & LASTDRIVE commands to assign virtual
drive letters to specific subdirectories. Please consult your DOS manual for complete
information on the use of these commands. You may be required to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT
& CONFIG.SYS files. If you are unfamiliar with the DOS command language or editing your
AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS files, it is recommended that you seek assistance from your favorite
PC guru.SUBST - This DOS command will create a virtual drive from a specific path. In common
terms, you could allocate your guest directory (ie: c:\filex\guest)
to a separate drive letter (G:) and then assign access rights to that Virtual Drive.
The command syntax is:

	SUBST newdrive: oldrive:\path
or	SUBST G: C:\Filex\Guest (to follow the example)

Now, when you access the G: Drive on your system, you are really accessing the sub-directory of
C:\Filex\Guest. A new command line is required for each Virtual Drive that you wish to create. Refer to
Access Rights above for more information on assigning security options to these "new" drives.
To automate the procedure of assigning Virtual Drives, it is suggested that you add the "SUBST" line(s)
to the end of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, before the line that activates Windows ("WIN").
LASTDRIV - This DOS command allows the computer to create more drive letters than the physical
drives the computer sees when you turn on the power. You can assign LASTDRIVE to any drive letter up
to and including Z. Be sure to include all of the virtual drive letters you wish to assign. The command
syntax is:

	LASTDRIV=drive:
or	LASTDRIV=G: (to follow the example above)

The command line must be included in your Config.Sys file. Please refer to your DOS manual for
additional information.
