Official Setup Guide for ViSiON-X and Fido-type Networks by Jormungand.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This text file will take you step by step in setting up ViSiON-X
with a front door mailer and tosser, complete with batch files.

There are two options in this setup:

1) The most common setup is to have your frontdoor mailer up
at all times. When a mail call comes in the mailer will
automatically process/pack/toss the mail. When a human
call comes it, the mailer will determine that the call is
not netmail and subsequently exit and load ViSiON-X. When
the human call is over, a batch file (same concept as the
KEEPUP.BAT that you are using to keep ViSiON-X loaded now)
reloads up the mailer. For your convenience, a sample batch
file has been included at the end of this text file.

2) The second option, which I (and your users) prefer, is to
run ViSiON-X as usual and to take advantage of V-X's exter-
nal event to load the mailer, then poll and process mail and
	exit back to ViSiON-X.

If you are going to be a HUB and/or need your mailer up 24hrs a
day to process mail then your choice is obvious. Realize that
even if you needed the mailer for 12hrs, option 2 is still just
as easy to use.

The second option is nice because, for most systems, it is not
necessary to have your mailer available 24 hours a day. The only
reason for having the mailer up at all times if for HUBS who need
to be able to process mail at any time. But for most systems,
those who call out for their mail packets and have the freedom to
do fidomail when they want to, option number two is better. The
advantage is that your users will not have to wait while your
computer exits from the mailer and loads V-X and that you will
have the luxury of ViSiON-X's WFC and easier access to your
board. (The latter may not sound all that important to you, but
after a couple weeks of having to wait while your board loads to
read email, look in the SysOp log, do file maint., etc. you will
realize what I am talking about.)

The first part of the setup is the same for either option, but
keep this in mind for later on in the text.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE:

These instructions were made solely for registered ViSiON-X Sys
Ops. At the time this text was written the most recent ViSiON-X
release was .99b. These instructions are written for Intermail
v2.25 (will work with earlier versions) and GECHO v1.02+ (Will work
with earlier versions suck as v1.00+). Although substitutes like
Front Door and Tosscan may work, it is up to you to configure these
other softwares correctly.
------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT YOU NEED:

	Registered ViSiON-X v.99 or above
	FIDOMAIL.EXE - Included with V-X
InterMail v2.25 or above (will work with the v2.20's series)
	GEcho v1.00+ or above

STEP ONE - The Genesis: Install Software.

	1) Unzip InterMail into a temporary.

	2) Run InterMail's INSTALL program, let Intermail install
	   into \IM.

	3) Unzip GEcho into the \IM directory.

Both of these softwares come with comprehensive instructions. If
you have any questions/problems, you can most likely find your
answer in there.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

STEP TWO - Cut and Paste: FDNODE.CTL, ROUTE.IM, FRODO.BAT

	1) Cut out FRODO.BAT from the end of this text file and
copy it to \IM. This is the batch file that will man-
age your mailer and its operations.

2A) Cut out ROUTE.IM from the end of this text file and
copy it to \IM\SYSTEM. This is the file that controls
what your mailer is supposed to be doing at a certain
	    schedule.

2B) EDIT ROUTE.IM and follow the directions in the file.
All you need to do is alter the POLL commands.

3A) Intermail will create a FDNODE.CTL for you when you
installed it. This is the file where you specify the
names of the nodelists that you want the mailer to com-
pile. The file is located in the \IM\NODELIST direc
	    tory.

COPY the nodelists of the net(s) you wish to compile
	    into the \IM\NODELIST directory.

The command needed to add new nodeslists is: PvtList
		I.E. PvtList CYBER.*

3B) Run IMNC.EXE *EVERY TIME* you change the nodelists.

STEP THREE - Choices, Choices: InterMail Setup.

Okay, I am now going to take you step by step through the setup.
Many of these options will be up to you. When a choice is op
tional I will mark it with a "*". Be sure to notice the bottom
line on the screen which provides an explanation and help
throughout the setup.

played when your mailer is not accepting human
		      callers.
General : This is all obvious. If you wish to have a

Hit enter and alter the list to: YYNYYNNYYNNNNNNN.

Hit escape twice to get back to the event manager. Hit insert
and create the following:

** NOTE: You may change the times for most of these events. Be
sure that you get the correct times and lengths if you
to any alterations. In this setup, we will have your

If everything is okay, then go ahead and press escape and be sure
to save all changes. If something is different, by now you should be
able to easily correct it.

We are now half way there, and now we have a lot of tedious shit
to do. I'd suggest you take a break, get a beer and come back in
a little while. If not, suit yourself and keep plugging away.

STEP FOUR - Setting up by the software of the gods: V-X Setup.

The following is a sample msgboard entry. This is all extremely
self explanatory, the only difference is that you are defining a
Fido Address and Message Directory, and -of course- define the
net as #3, Fido. For the message directory, you must define an
ORIGINAL directory for each msgsub. You will use this directory
next in the TOSSER section, the tosser will use this directory to
import and export mail. ViSiON-X's FIDOMAIL will use this directory
to extract mail for the tosser and import mail tossed by the tosser.
The regular convention I use is using the net's FIDO ID as the
directory name. For example, if the fido id was INF-SYS I would
use the directory C:\VISION-X\BOARDS\INF-SYS.

* 1) Area Name : CyberCrime SysOps Only
  2) Echo Mail Conference : 0 <- will always be zero
* 3) Area Flag Number           : None
* 4) Access Level               : 69
* 5) Post Msg Level             : 69
* 6) Access Name/Number         : 1
* 7) Maximum Number             : 100
* 8) Sponsor                    : Your Handle
  9) Net Type : 3
*10) Net Name : CCi
 11) Netmail Orgin 1 :
 12) Netmail Orgin 2 :
*13) Fido Address : 69:666/13
*14) Message Directory : C:\VISION-X\BOARDS\INF-SYS\
 15) Use Real Names : No
  * - Optional

 1) The area name, obviously, depends on the area name.
 2) Leave the echo mail conference at 0, this is for FelonyNET.
3-10) This is totally up to you.
11) If you leave this blank it will use what is defined in the
     CONFIG.
13) Your Fido Address
14) See discussion above, this directory will be the directory
you define in the tosser. They MUST match.
15) Always leave this to NO! Only a PD net would require you
to use this option. If you are a PD SysOp reading this
and running V-X, undoubtedly cracked, you will be crashed
    at our soonest convenience!

Set up all the msgsubs you will be carrying according to this
example. This is all very self-explanatory.

setup C for CyberCrime. Remember this
example when we set up the areas.

Orgin AKA : Your main address for this net.
Seen-by : All your addresses for this net.
Connections : The nodes of the boards you are packing mail
		  for.

** Note: Be sure to take a look at the GLOBAL options in this
area. This is the reason that group names are so
important. For example, if I was a hub for 10 boards
in CyberCrime and I need to delete 2 nodes and add 3 new
nodes I can use group options to change all the message
areas in group C rather than do this one area at a time.
Even if your not a hub, you should take advantage of this
freature when possible to save time.

Now for a quick explanation of the different areas in this setup.
First there is the area name, you will notice in any fido-type
net ECHO LIST there will be fido id's for their corresponding
areas. These id's commonly look like INF-SYS, FED-ACD, SW-BBS,
etc. The tosser uses these id's to match up the message to the
right msg sub. The reason its best to setup the ViSiON-X areas
before setting up the areas here is that GEcho will warn you that
your specified directory doesn't exist if you made a mistake in
setting the area up in V-X or if you made a syntax error on the
PATH. Remember, that the path you specify in GEcho must corre
spond to that which you defined in V-X for that area.
The OPTIONS are up to you, but be sure you know what each one
does or you may inadvertently cause your tosser not to work
properly, (like if you put SECURITY on) you can read all about
the options in the GEcho documentation. The purge information is
totally up to you. For CONNECTIONS you will need to add all the
addresses you are packing mail for. If you are a regular node,
you are most likely packing only for your regional hub. In that
case just list your hub in connections and your tosser will know
who to send your messages to. If you are a hub, then you will
list many addresses here.

Step Six - Pro-Choice: Front or Event Mailer?

Okay, now those of you who were interested in using the mailer in
an event probably thought I had forgotten about you. As of right
now, you are set up for a 24-hour mailer. Don't worry, its not
too much extra work to set up the mailer as an event.

The way the mail event works is you run ViSiON-X as normal, and
that at a specified time V-X calls its external event. We will
set your event to call the FRODO.BAT. The mailer will poll, toss
mail, etc. as usual and then at a specified time the mailer will
exit and ViSiON-X will load back up.

Now, you must have the times synchronized for this to work. So,
to make this easier to understand, I am going to use 03:00 am and
04:00am as the starting and ending time, respectively.

Enter the ViSiON-X CONFIG and go to the EVENTS/TIMES section. At
the bottom of the first screen you will see Time to Run Batch and
Batch File to Run. Set them to 03:00am and FRODO.BAT respective
ly. Save the config and load up IMSETUP.

Goto Manager, Events. You will want to delete event number 4
(4,B,-------A,+,03:45,23:15,0,-1,YOUR ADDRESS). The event we
just deleted kept the mailer up the rest of the day to accept
mail and bbs callers. Now we shall create an event that will
force the mailer to exit instead. Press INS and create the
following event:

Tag: X
Days: -------A
Modifier: Add Eventbase (+)
Start Time: 04:00
Length: 00:01
Errorlevel: 35
Not Used
Behavior: Y,Y,N

Save the event, and the event summary should now look like this:
0 @ -------A * 03:00 00:01 0 -1 Address
1 X -------A * 03:00 00:01 250 -1 "
2 A -------A * 03:00 00:45 0 -1 "
3 X -------A * 03:45 00:01 150 -1 "
4 X -------A + 04:00 00:01 35 -1 "

Errorlevel 35 will cause the mailer to exit to DOS and this
ViSiON-X will automatically load back up.

Step Seven - So hard to say goodbye: Finishing up.

NOTE: If you are currently planning to use the mailer 24hrs, but
are in FelonyNET - NO PROBLEM. Now that you are familiar with
creating events, create an eXternal event that will call errorle
vel 69.

Okay, now all thats left is cutting out the following files and
placing them in the proper directories. Be sure that IM is set
in your path from the AUTOEXEC.BAT.

I hope this text was helpful, and even better if you understand a
little of all that you have done. I know when I first started
toying with all this I had no idea what I was doing. The only
reason I made it through was due to a text file like this one by
Midnight Sorry and Chevy which was designed to set up ViSiON-X
with CCi. Only later did I really understand everything and how
it worked. My suggestion is to play around with it and take a
look at the documentation of the software.

If you have any problems or questions you can contact me on
Infinite Ragnarok or through FelonyNET PrvNetMail.
