It's the easiest thing in the world to give players fifteen or more different
skills but it's a whole new ball game (sorry) to produce a match display to
illustrate the effect of these. In PS we use five basic skills; (1) tackling
(2) passing (3) ball control (4) goal scoring and (5) pace/aggression. We
use these skills with a match display which realistically allows you to see
the effects of the different abilities of players.
Winning the ball from the opposition is best achieved with players skilled
in (1) and (5). Defenders should be hard tackling and aggressive. Retaining
the ball comes with players with ball control and passing skills (2) and (3).
Turning possession into goals (or shots on goal) comes from (4) and (5) goal
scoring and pace. Midfield players tend to fall into two categories; ball
winners and play makers. Strikers generally have high levels of (4) and (5).
The match flow display will show you the ball-winning/ball-retention ratio
and the possession statistics will help you judge this. After the game the
the workrate and skill ratings will reflect the individual players contribut-
ion to this. The shots on goal figures speak for themselves.
You need to assemble a squad of players whose skills will best suit the
style of play you wish to pursue.
