  DEPRECIATION CALCULATION NOTES
  MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.x
  MS-DOS 5.0/6.0 AND THE MS-DOS SHELL
  OPTIMIZING YOUR SYSTEM FOR DEPRECIATION
  IF SOMETHING DOESN'T WORK

  DEPRECIATION CALCULATION NOTES
  ------------------------------

If depreciation did not calculate for an asset, check the
  following items:

  1. Is the business use percentage greater than 0?
  2. Has the asset been placed in service after the end of the
      year?
  3. Are you using the proper convention? Remember for MACRS
tangible assets only the half-year and mid-quarter
      conventions are allowable.
  4. Is the prior depreciation greater than the cost of the asset?
  5. Is the asset's life over?
  6. Has the asset been disposed of? Remember for ACRS tangible
assets, no depreciation is allowed for the year of disposition.

  MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.x
  ---------------------

Depreciation can be run under Windows 3.x in either Standard
or Enhanced modes. The Program Information File (PIF) DEPR.PIF
contains the settings necessary to run Depreciation.

To run Depreciation under Windows 3.x:

  1. Make sure you have approximately 545K of conventional memory
      available BEFORE running Windows.

  2. Run the DEPR.PIF file from within Windows (you can do this
by either selecting the DEPR.PIF file from the Windows File
Manager, or by adding an Icon to one of your Program Manager
Groups, where the Command Line = [yourpath]\DEPR.PIF).

  3. You should avoid using the "Shell to DOS" menu option
      throughout Depreciation while in Windows.

  MS-DOS 5.0/6.0 AND THE MS-DOS SHELL
  -----------------------------------

You can add Depreciation to the MS-DOS Shell as a program.

Set the MS-DOS Program Item Properties of Depreciation to the
  following:

        Program Title: Depreciation 93
        Commands C:\DEPR\DEPR.BAT (or appropriate path)
Startup Dir C:\DEPR (or appropriate path)
        Advanced:
           Conventional Memory KB Required 524

  OPTIMIZING YOUR SYSTEM FOR DEPRECIATION
  ---------------------------------------

  Conventional Memory

Depreciation requires approximately 524k of free conventional
memory to run. By increasing the available conventional memory
that Depreciation can use, you may notice an increase in
  performance.

  Expanded or Extended Memory

Depreciation can utilize Expanded or Extended memory to swap
portions of the program to memory rather than to disk.
Optimally, at least 600k of Expanded or Extended memory is
needed, however Depreciation will use less memory if that is
  all that is available.

  Disk Cache Utilities

Since Depreciation is very disk intensive, a disk cache program
can offer the greatest performance increase. There are many
disk cache programs available, including SMARTDRV.EXE which
  comes with DOS 5.0/6.0.

For any disk cache program, set the size of the cache to the
  largest possible size (512K minimum).

  Using a RAM Disk

If you have a RAM DISK, you can set the Depreciation working
directory to the RAM drive. This will result in an
increase in performance. Also, if you have access to a network
drive that is faster than your local drive, you can tell
Depreciation to use that drive. To have Depreciation use a
working directory, select "User Options" from the "Options" menu.

  Cursor Speed

If you have DOS 4.01 or greater, you can use the DOS MODE
command to increase the speed of the cursor. The MODE
command will increase the cursor speed for all applications.
To use the MODE command, either type the following command at
the DOS prompt, or add it to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to
  execute the command automatically:

        MODE CON: RATE=32 DELAY=1

  IF SOMETHING DOESN'T WORK
  -------------------------

Many answers to your questions can be found in the User's Guide
or the Help menu in the program. Before calling Technical Support,
review the manual, this README.TXT, and the Help features for
further information. If you still require assistance, please
contact ChipSoft Technical Support. Be sure to have the following
  information ready:

The Depreciation product name and version.

A description of your computer and peripherals.

The type and version of your network, if applicable.

** If you have received a critical error screen, print the
error following the instructions on the screen. Fax the
error to us if possible. **

Copies of your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT may be
        required by a support technician.

If either the Depreciation program or the company is
located on your local hard drive (non-network), run
the DOS CHKDSK command. If any errors are shown, then
have this information ready for a support technician.
