INTRODUCTION
____________

The information in this document supplements the sections on using and
installing multimedia features and applications, contained in the
   following publications:

   o OS/2 2.1 Using the Operating System
   o OS/2 2.1 Installation Guide

NOTE: If you are viewing this file with a program that uses
proportional fonts, you may wish to change to a monospaced font,
          for the best readability.

APPLICATION NOTES
_________________

   1. All MMPM/2 subsystems use a "Multimedia work path" to store
temporary files. This directory is initially \MMOS2, and can be
changed using the Multimedia Setup program. If you plan to do
extensive audio file recording or editing, you may wish to change
the Multimedia work path to utilize a directory on a drive with
       plenty of extra space.

   2. If you intend to use the Digital Audio application to edit large
wave audio files (1 minute or more), then you might want to increase
the MINFREE parameter in the SWAPPATH config.sys statement to
provide an earlier warning when the amount of swapper disk space is
reaching low levels. Type "help swappath" at an OS/2 command line
for more information about the SWAPPATH statement.

   3. The MIDI and Digital Video icons in the Multimedia folder utilize
the same basic media player (mppm.exe). This program supports
command line parameters which allow you to automatically start
playing a multimedia file and optionally close the program when the
playback completes. The syntax to achieve this is:

                               MPPM FILENAME /S[C]

       where

FILENAME is the name of the multimedia file to be played on the
default device associated with that file.
/S specifies to begin playing the file after it is opened.
/SC specifies to begin playing the file, and close the media
                 player when playback completes.

   4. The MIDI and Digital Video templates created in the OS/2 Templates
folder cannot be used to create new files of these types. You will
receive an error message if you attempt to start a file created by
dragging one of these templates to a folder.

ADDITIONAL MULTIMEDIA CONTENT ON THE OS/2 CD-ROM
________________________________________________

If you have the CD-ROM version of the OS/2 product, then note the
following additional items contained on the CD:

   Sound Samples
   _____________

Additional sounds are located in the \MMPM2\SOUNDS directory of the CD.

   Movies
   ______

A wealth of digital video files have been provided on the CD. A
directory tree has been created to group the clips according to certain
   audio and video settings.

The following subdirectories on the CD contain movie clips:

   o \MMPM2\MOVIES\ULTIMOTN\8BITAUD\STANDARD\320X240
   o \MMPM2\MOVIES\ULTIMOTN\8BITAUD\STANDARD\160X120
   o \MMPM2\MOVIES\ULTIMOTN\8BITAUD\HIGHPERF\320X240
   o \MMPM2\MOVIES\ULTIMOTN\16BITAUD\STANDARD\320X240
   o \MMPM2\MOVIES\ULTIMOTN\16BITAUD\STANDARD\160X120
   o \MMPM2\MOVIES\ULTIMOTN\16BITAUD\HIGHPERF\320X240
   o \MMPM2\MOVIES\INDEO\320X240
   o \MMPM2\MOVIES\INDEO\160X120

The subdirectory names 'beneath' \MMPM2\MOVIES are composed as follows:

o ULTIMOTN or INDEO -- The video clips were processed using
Ultimotion* or Indeo* compression technologies, respectively.

o 8BITAUD vs. 16BITAUD -- The sound for the video clips was recorded
using either 8-bit or 16-bit PCM audio, respectively. 16-bit PCM
audio results in higher quality sound, but requires higher
performance system configurations. All video soundtracks were
recorded using a 22 KHz sampling rate.

   o STANDARD vs. HIGHPERF

STANDARD movies are recorded at a data rate that is limited to less
than 150 KB per second. Movies recorded at this rate can be played
directly from a standard CD-ROM drive.

HIGHPERF movies are recorded at higher data rates that exceed 150
KB/second in order to provide higher quality images. Since their
data rate exceeds 150 KB/second, these files must be played either
       from a double-speed (300 KB/second) CD-ROM drive, or from a hard
       disk.

o 160X120 vs. 320X240 -- This indicates the normal size for the movie
clips, in pixels. For example, 320X240 indicates a normal video
window 320 pixels wide and 240 pixels high.

Finally, after you have selected a particular directory, the file names
in that directory are named as follows:

   o xxxxxx05.AVI -- Movie xxxxxx displays at 5 frames-per-second.
   o xxxxxx15.AVI -- Movie xxxxxx displays at 15 frames-per-second.
   o xxxxxx24.AVI -- Movie xxxxxx displays at 24 frames-per-second.

DIGITAL AUDIO SUPPORT
_____________________

A variety of digital audio sample sounds are provided for your use and
enjoyment. To play these sounds, you must have installed one of the
   MMPM/2 audio adapter features.

NOTE: If you install support for multiple audio adapters, but do not
have one of the adapters physically installed in the machine,
then audio applications may not function correctly. Reference
the section entitled "De-installing an Audio Adapter", below, for
          additional information.

Sounds courtesy of Network Music, Inc. - San Diego, California
   For more sounds, call (800) 854-2075 (U.S. and Canada) or (619) 451-6400.

   WIN-OS/2 Audio
   ______________

Audio support in the WIN-OS/2 and DOS sessions is dependent on installed
drivers; these drivers are not provided by MMPM/2. For the Sound
Blaster*, Pro AudioSpectrum 16*, and IBM M-Audio Capture and Playback
adapters, the required support is shipped on the diskettes which you
should have received with the audio adapter.

If you are planning to use audio in a WIN-OS/2 session, please ensure
that the appropriate DOS and Windows drivers are loaded and that all of
the drivers for an adapter are configured for the same interrupt (IRQ)
   level and DMA channel.

DIGITAL VIDEO SUPPORT
_____________________

The picture quality and performance of the playback of digital video
(.AVI) files is highly dependent on the machine configuration. Video
clips will play more smoothly on machines with faster processors, and
the quality of the video picture is better with SVGA or XGA video
adapters. Machine configurations which fall below the performance
requirements of digital video may exhibit any of the following losses in
   presentation quality:

o Loss of smoothness in video playback
o Picture clarity limited to 16 colors on VGA displays
o In extreme cases, loss of the audio soundtrack.

The minimum memory requirement for playback of movie files is 7
megabytes. However, 8-12 Mb is recommended for better performance.

If you are playing more than one movie clip at a time, you may receive
an error message "Error Allocating Memory from Heap." If this happens,
add the /H parameter to the following statement in your CONFIG.SYS file,
   as follows:

   DEVICE=d:\MMOS2\SSMDD.SYS /H:nn

where d is the drive on which you installed MMPM/2, and nn is a number
from 32 to 256. The default is 32. For best results, set nn = 32 x
(the number of movie clips being played). For example, if you plan on
   regularly viewing 2 clips at a time, set nn to 64 (32 x 2).

NOTE: Our test groups have observed the following:

o On some machines with XGA/2 display adapters, digital video
playback may not operate correctly. The symptoms are a
system hang or audio with no video. Digital video requires
XGA/2 equipped systems to have the "1 MB VRAM Aperture Base
Address" enabled. View the configuration and reconfigure
your machine appropriately. If you have 16 MB of memory or
more, remove enough to get down to 15 MB of memory or less.

o When you are playing a software motion video selection, it
may show through on the screen after you switch to a
full-screen DOS, OS/2, or WIN-OS/2 session. To prevent this
from occurring, pause the digital video playback or
hide/minimize the playback window before switching to the
              full-screen session.

   Indeo Digital Video Support
   ___________________________

MMPM/2 supports the playback of .AVI files that utilize Intel's video
compression technique, with the following limitations:

o Pel-doubling and pel-halving are not supported (The size of a given
       video clip cannot be changed).
o Video clips cannot be displayed in VGA or 24-bit color video modes.
SVGA and XGA modes are supported.
o i750* accelerator hardware will not be utilized.

and a device driver name of SBAud1$.

   Example 2

     DEVICE=C:\MMOS2\SBD2.SYS 1 5 220 4 /N:SBAud1$

In this example, the Sound Blaster card has a device name of AUDIO1$,
interrupt 5, I/O=220, a buffer size of 4KB, and a device driver name of
SBAud1$. Notice that the DMA channel parameter is missing. This is
because the DMA channel is fixed at 1 for non-Sound Blaster PRO cards.
