Please refer to this document BEFORE installing and using the
product. This file contains the latest details regarding the
current release of DiskLock PC. The goal of this document is to
keep everyone informed of the latest changes made and how to avoid
known problem areas.

================================================
New Features: see included addendum for details
================================================

  1) The ability to lock secondary user out of any local
     partition except C:

  2) Total support for Stacker and DoubleSpace compression.

  3) Compatibility with caching programs such as SmartDrv,
     Hyperdisk and PC-Kwik.

  4) The Audit feature now has an ON/OFF switch. Also added are
     customized reports.

  5) Support for laptops with Auto-resume.

  6) The ability to load the kernal into UMB space.

=========================
To assure a good install:
=========================

  1) Remove any other security products from your machine
     (both software and hardware cards).

  2) Install DiskLock PC only on a primary bootable disk drive,
     not on a non-bootable or logical drive.

  3) Remove any TSR's from your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
     Remove any non-standard Device drivers from your CONFIG.SYS.
     After installing DiskLock PC these may be reinserted.

  4) Run CHKDSK /F. If any errors, repeat and/or run Mace Remedy or
     Emergency Room or similar program to correct.

  5) Set the number of available file handles to at least 20. This
     is accomplished by adding a FILES=20 statement to the
     CONFIG.SYS file.

  6) Run an unfrag program to compact the hard disk.

  7) Scan your hard disk for computer viruses and remove any
     found.

     NOTE: DiskLock PC comes with an anti-virus program called
           Search & Destroy.

================
Memory Managers:
================

The range 8000-9FFF must be an EXCLUDE option for ALL memory managers.
If you allow the install to modify your config.sys, this will be done
for you.

Run any memory optimization programs, before installing DiskLock PC.

PS/2 users with any memory managers (e.g. QEMM, BlueMAX), should use
D000 as the page frame address, which is the address of the beginning
of the 64 KB contiguous segment through which expanded memory is
mapped according to the EMS specification. Use your reference disk to
make sure none of the hardware adapter cards is in conflict with the
address. If any conflict occurs, move the hardware adapter card's
address away from the 64 KB area.

Quarterdeck's QEMM386:  Do not use options ST:M or ST:P.

EMM386 users should exclude the network card address
when installing the kernel into EMS.

Qualitas' BlueMAX: For PS/2 users, the BlueMAX BIOS compression
may cause some problems. Comment out the BCF line and any RAM
lines for excluding new adapters' addresses under the file
BlueMAX.pro and check the page frame address to ensure the
DiskLock PC Kernel works.

HIMEM.SYS with EMM386.SYS is compatible with DiskLock PC

=======================================
Loading the DiskLock PC Kernal into EMS
=======================================
If you load the DiskLock PC Kernel into EMS, Windows Enhanced Mode
is not permitted.

You should NOT use the "/x" or the "/a" parameters to have CONFIG.SYS
device drivers utilize EMS. Let them use extended memory to avoid conflicts.

DOS Command Line applications that need EMS may be run from a Windows
Enhanced Mode DOS Prompt, and receive EMS from Windows.

Do not specify EMS for CONFIG.SYS BUFFERS, RAMDRIVE.SYS, disk
caching programs, WORM drive or CD-ROM drive drivers. Also, if
you have problems and any of these are loaded into UMB's, try
running them from lower memory instead. Disk drivers of all
types tend to be timing-critical even without DiskLock PC, and
more so with, especially with the DiskLock PC Kernel running in EMS.

===========================
Windows 3.1 and DiskLock PC
===========================
DiskLock PC does not support Microsoft Windows 3.1's 32 bit Fast
Access feature. Disable this feature before installing DiskLock PC.

Power Windows users should use only the Windows HIMEM.SYS
and no other memory manager at all (but do use DOS=HIGH
for DOS 5).

Note that use of DOS 5 UMB's and similar facilities in
QEMM and 386MAX may adversely affect Windows Enhanced Mode
utilization of this memory space (yes, Windows creates its
own UMB's using its built-in DPMI 0.9 memory manager).

Windows users experiencing mysterious problems should
check that adequate memory and adequate free disk
space is available for Windows. Such problems can
include slowness, apparent hangs that recover after a
minute or two, error messages from DiskLock PC such as
"Get-User Error", etc. Another possible cause is
SMARTDRV.EXE. Remove Smartdrv, reboot, and retry the operation.

======================
Smartdrv and DiskLock:
======================

If you have a low memory situation, or if you want to run the
DiskLock PC Kernel in EMS, do not use Smartdrv at all, either
in your CONFIG.SYS, or in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
In any case, do not DEVICEHIGH or LOADHIGH Smartdrv!

Non-Administrative users may NOT use Smartdrv.
You will get a DiskLock PC "I/O VIOLATION" screen as soon as
Smartdrv is started since it does low-level disk writes.

DOS 5 users using the DOSSHELL and applications using
EMS must obtain a corrected DOSSWAP.EXE from the
Microsoft BBS (above). Do not run DOSSHELL if you load
the DiskLock PC Kernel into EMS.

========================================
Compression utilities:
========================================

Disklock is compatible with Stacker versions 2.x and 3.x, DoubleSpace
and SuperStor from MS-DOS and PC-DOS respectively.

====================
Other Items of Note:
====================
DISKLOCK -M will invoke DiskLock PC in a monochrome mode.
This may be useful on laptops and other monochrome environments.
