                Novell DOS 7 Beta 3 Release Notes
                =================================

BETA Components
===============
Please ensure that you do not mix any components from previous beta
releases with components from beta 3.

Installing Novell DOS 7 from the Network Drive
==============================================
For simple installation of Novell DOS 7 in a networked environment, use
XCOPY /H (for system and hidden file) to copy all files into a
subdirectory on your NetWare server. Users can then install onto their
own workstations by simply running INSTALL from the network drive.

DOSBook
=======
The following enhancements have been made to DOSBook since beta 2 :

1. It is possible to search for a topic in the index (from any section)
   simply by typing the word to be found. You will be placed in the
   index at the closest match to your word.
2. It is now possible to print either the current section or the
   current Chapter.
3. Performance has been improved.

SETVER Command
==============

The following statement:-

DEVICE = SETVER.EXE

is inserted into the CONFIG.SYS file during installation. Removing
this statement may result in certain programs failing to run, with an
incorrect version number error. e.g.. NETX will fail. Please do not
remove it.

Running SETVER at the command line allows you to change the DOS version
number that the operating system reports to a particular program. This
feature should be used with caution as incorrect settings may result in
data corruption or loss.

Displaying the Version Table
----------------------------
To display the version table, use SETVER as follows:

        SETVER

The version table display is in two columns; the left column lists the
programs and the right column lists the corresponding DOS version
numbers with which each program is designed to run.

Modifying the Version Table
---------------------------
In some cases, a program designed to run with a previous DOS version
will not run correctly with the current version unless its name is
included in the version table; the table tells the program that it is
running with the correct DOS version.

To add a program to the version table, use SETVER as follows, where
filename is the name of the program including extension, and n.nn is the
DOS version number that the operating system reports to the program:

SETVER filename n.nn

If you specify a filename that is already in the version table, the
existing entry is replaced.

Adding a program to the version table will not solve the problem if
the program is not compatible with Novell DOS 7.

You can also use SETVER as follows:

SETVER filename /delete Deletes the entry for the
                                        specified filename from the
                                        version table.

SETVER filename /delete /quiet Hides the message
                                        usually displayed
                                        when a version table
                                        entry is deleted.

You must reboot the system before any changes you make to the version
table take effect.

Stacker and DPMS
================
Note: The Stacker driver in beta 3 is a DPMS compliant driver

CHKDSK and Stacker Drives
=========================
CHKDSK is now CHKDSK.EXE not CHKDSK.COM as in beta 1.

The CHKDSK program now provides full support for Stacker compressed
drives.

CHKDSK includes the following options:

CHKDSK /? or /H Displays help text.
CHKDSK /B Runs CHKDSK in batch file mode.
CHKDSK /D Displays a detailed error and statistics
                        report.
CHKDSK /F Allows CHKDSK to write corrections to the
                        disk.
CHKDSK /S Performs a surface scan on Stacker drives.
CHKDSK /V Displays filenames as they are processed.
CHKDSK /WP Checks (and repairs) write-protected Stacker
                        drives.

WINSWAP MS Windows permanent Swap File Support
==============================================
WINSWAP is an MS Windows Control Panel application, which displays
or changes the MS Windows Virtual Memory (swap file) setting when
running MS Windows in 386 enhanced mode. WINSWAP now makes it possible
to create a permanent MS Windows swap file on stacker drives.

To view, or change Virtual Memory setting you should:

1. In the Main group, choose the Control Panel icon.
2. In the Control Panel Window, choose the "Virtual Memory" icon. The
   Virtual Memory dialog box appears, displaying the current swap file
   settings.
3. To change the drive location, size, and type of the swap file, choose
   the Change button.

Note:

If your computer does not have Stacker compressed drives, the "Virtual
Memory" icon will not appear in the Control Panel; use the standard 386
Enhanced icon - Virtual Memory button, instead.

Before creating a Permanent Swap File, optimize the Stacker drive
using DISKOPT. After creating a Permanent Swap File on a Stacker drive,
we recommended you to exit MS Windows and check the Stacker drive
structure by running CHKDSK /F. Two error messages might appear:
"Free sector count invalid" and "Erased sector count invalid".
Although harmless, these errors should be repaired.

Note: Do NOT execute DISKOPT on Stacker drives which already have a
Permanent Swap File, as it will get corrupted. This will be addressed in a
subsequent release.

DOUBLESPACE drives
==================
Drives which have been previously converted to Doublespace will continue
to be supported after installing Novell DOS 7.
However if you wish to convert the drive to Stacker you can use the
conversion option in SETUP.

SUPERSTOR drives
================
For DR DOS 6 users of SuperStor disk compression: You can continue
to use SuperStor disk compression in this release but be aware that
DEVSWAP.COM will automatically be replaced with a new version during
INSTALL.

However, if you wish to convert a Superstor drive to Stacker you can use
the conversion option in SETUP.

Note:

i) for this Beta, before running the conversion please run the CHKDSK
utility supplied with your DRDOS 6 product, with the /S command line
option.

ii) the conversion does not support Superstor Pro drives.

Converting Superstor and Doublespace drives to Stacker
======================================================
SETUP allows you to convert an existing Superstor or MS Doublespace
compressed drive to a Stacker compressed drive.

The conversion of the drive is done over a period of time and works by
reading the existing Superstor or MS Doublespace compressed data and
writing it back to the disk as Stacker compressed data.

The Stacker driver will warn you that the drive is partially converted
and will request that you run the STAC utility. Please ignore
this message.

However, if DISKOPT is run on a partially converted drive it will
complete the conversion of all remaining compressed data to Stacker
compressed data as a part of it's optimization of the drive.

For this Beta only, we would request that you refrain from running
DISKOPT on a partially converted compressed drive, to enable full
testing of the "on-the-fly" conversion..

Note:

Early versions of Norton utilities 7.0 will incorrectly diagnose a
converted Superstor or Doublespace drive as faulty. THIS IS NOT A
FAULT ON THE DRIVE. Please contact your supplier for an updated version
of the Norton utility.

TASKMGR Cut and Paste
=====================
Please note that the Cut and Paste option will not be available in either
the Multitasker or the Task Switcher.

Bypassing Startup Files
=======================
If you want to bypass your configuration files (CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT) during Startup, press and release the F5 key (once
only) after your computer finishes its internal tests. This is
usually indicated by a beep. Your computer will then start with
a basic ("clean") configuration instead of your usual
configuration.

Confirming Each Startup Command
===============================
If you want the system to prompt you to confirm each CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT command during Startup, press and release the F8 key
(once only) after your computer finishes its internal tests. This is
usually indicated by a beep. Each command in CONFIG.SYS and
AUTOEXEC.BAT is displayed, one at a time, followed by a prompt;
answer Y to execute the command or N to bypass it.

UNSECURE Command
================
If you have enabled security and you are unable to access the hard
disk, you can disable security by running the UNSECURE command. Do
this by booting from the installation disk, quitting INSTALL and
then typing UNSECURE. When you enter UNSECURE you will be prompted
for the master key password, which you specified when security was
enabled. Enter the password and security will be disabled.

UNDELETE and DELWATCH
=====================
You can use UNDELETE to recover deleted files across the Novell DOS 7
network as long as they have been saved as pending delete files by
DELWATCH. DELWATCH, however, must be run on the desktop server (not
the mapped network drive) before you can undelete files across the
network.

STACKS Command
==============
The STACKS command, to support the use of data stacks for hardware
interrupts, is now available. Use STACKS=n,s in CONFIG.SYS, where n
specifies the number of stacks (0 or 8 through 64) and s specifies
the size of each stack (0 and 32 through 512). The default STACKS
setting is 0,0.

EMM386
======
For applications requiring more EMS/XMS handles use the following
command to increase the number of handles available :-

        EMM386 handles = n   (where n is number from 0 - 255)

EMM386 now uses extra memory on Compaq 386 machines by default when
the DPMI or MULTI switches are not specified. The COMPAQ command line
switch is no longer required. For compatibility you can still use the
COMPAQ switch. If you experience problems on Compaqs, try specifying
COMPAQ=OFF, on the EMM386 command line.

In a subsequent release, automatic detection of extra memory on Compaq
machines will be extended to instances where the DPMI or MULTI command
line switches are specified.

EDIT
====
You can now access DOSBook from within EDIT. To do this, select the
DOSBook option from the Help menu.

Upgrading from Netware Lite
===========================
To upgrade an existing Netware Lite system to the Novell DOS 7 desktop
server use the PNUPGRAD utility.

PNUPGRAD migrates the following Netware Lite components :-
     Netware Lite Server
     User Accounts
     Resources
     Rights

Prerequisites
     The Desktop Server must be running
     You must log in to the Personal Netware Workgroup as supervisor
     Your server must be already setup in a Workgroup.

Note: Because of password encrytion, PNUPGRAD cannot migrate the user
passwords from Netware Lite. Immediately following upgrade, you will
need to reset each user's password.

After you have upgraded your Netware Lite server, restart your machine
in order to load the new information. You are now ready to log in to
your Workgroup.

Using the Network Diagnostics
=============================
For MS Windows users select the Network Diagnostics icon in your
Novell DOS 7 program group.

For DOS user enter PNWDIAGS at the command prompt.

Note: to use the diagnostics, the Network diagnostics VLM must be loaded
on your desktop server. (See option in Setup)

Technical Note for Programmers
==============================
The following OS version check:

INT 21 function 44 subfunction 52

returns the following value:

AX = 1072H

Installing the Network on Portable Computers
============================================
The following is suggested for users of portable computers with
Xircom Pocket Ethernet adaptors. However, the same method can be
adapted for other Parallel Port Ethernet adaptors, if necessary:

To add your network drivers into Novell DOS 7, create a diskette
containing the PE3ODI.COM Pocket Ethernet driver and a PE3.INS
file. (For other versions of Xircom Pocket Ethernet adaptors,
change the PE3 references as appropriate: to PE2, for example.)

Suggested contents for the .INS file are as follows:

InS_StArT
PE3ODI.COM
^Xircom PE3,PE3ODI.COM,IE0
?Please select the options that match your board's jumper settings
*RIE0(FRAME)Media Frame Type(s)
?NOTE: Ethernet_802.2 is now the default frame type for ...
@Ethernet_802.2
Ethernet_802.3
Ethernet_II
Ethernet_SNAP
InS_EnD

Then use SETUP to select 'OEM Supplied Driver' as the interface card.

SNMP Network Management services
================================
For information on the SNMP management services provided in Novell DOS 7,
please refer to the file NETMAN.DOC

Retail Versions of SuperStor Pro
================================
If you have installed on a system that has a compressed boot drive from
a retail version (not DRDOS 6.0 version) of SuperStor Pro. Then for this
Beta release you will have to follow the additional installation
procedure detailed below.

After completing the Novell DOS 7 Installation procedure, replace the
INSTALLATION diskette in drive A: and reboot the computer by pressing
Ctrl-Alt-Del simultaneously.

After INSTALL has loaded, quit the program (by typing Alt-X). Then type
the following at the command prompt A>

               SYS C:

The operating system files will be transferred to the uncompressed portion
of your hard disk.

Next, remove the INSTALLATION diskette and insert the UTILITIES 3 diskette
and type the following at the command prompt A>

               COPY DEVSWAP.COM C:

The correct version of DEVSWAP.COM will now be placed into the root
directory of your hard disk.

Remove the diskette from the drive and reboot by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del
simultaneously.

Connecting to Netware 2.x and 3.x Servers
=========================================
If you experience difficulty connecting to NetWare 2.X or 3.X servers,
ask your system administrator to check if you have the correct Frame
settings appropriate to your Network.

Running Novell DOS 7 with other networking products
===================================================
The Novell DOS 7 NET command, has a common program name, NET.EXE, that
is likely to exist in other networking products. After Installing Novell
DOS 7, the PATH statement will cause the NWCLIENT subdirectory to be
searched first, which contains the Novell DOS 7 NET command. If you wish
to use a NET.EXE program from another supplier, edit your PATH statement
so that the other vendor's subdirectory is referenced before NWCLIENT.

Alternatively if you install another vendor's networking product, or MS
Windows, you may find that the PATH statement is changed by their
installation procedure. This may force the NWCLIENT subdirectory to no
longer be referenced first, causing the other vendor's NET.EXE program
to be executed instead. If this happens, and you wish the Novell DOS 7
NET.EXE program to be executed in preference, edit your PATH statement
so that NWCLIENT appears at the start.
