1.0 Required Software

This version of Crosstalk for Windows requires Microsoft Windows,
version 3.1 or newer.

2.0 Amount of Memory and Hard Disk Space Required

You need approximately 4.5 MB of hard disk space and a minimum of
2 MB of system RAM to install and run Crosstalk for Windows (4 MB
of system RAM is recommended). Crosstalk for Windows uses about
400 KB of RAM.

3.0 Upgrading from Previous Versions to Version 2.0.1

When you run the Setup program for version 2.0.1, the program
knows if a previous version is installed on your computer. To
preserve your existing login information (for example, user ID
and password), the Setup program does not copy the session
profiles (.XWP) from the installation diskettes.

However, the Setup program does copy new script (.XWS and .XWC)
and QuickPad (.XWQ) files because these files were modified to
fix reported problems or needed to be recompiled for version
2.0.1.

If you are upgrading from version 2.0.0, we recommend you install
version 2.0.1 in the same directory. Unexpected results may
occur when trying to switch between Crosstalk for Windows 2.0.0
and Crosstalk for Windows 2.0.1 if installed on the same computer.

If you are upgrading from version 1.x, make sure you backup your
files before you install version 2.0 or newer. This includes the
phone book files (.XWP) and scripts (.XWS). The version 1.x phone
book files are converted to a new format with version 2.0.

NOTE: If you have memory problems during installation, exit the
Setup program and copy the contents of the Crosstalk for Windows
diskettes to your Crosstalk directory on your hard disk. Then,
start the Setup program again and answer Yes when you are asked
to skip the files that have already been copied.

Follow these steps to upgrade from version 2.0 to version 2.0.1:

1 If you have modified any version 2.0 service scripts or QuickPad
files, make a backup copy of these files before you install
  version 2.0.1.

2 Start Windows.

3 Choose Run from the File menu.

4 Enter drive:\SETUP.EXE in the Command Line edit box, where drive
is the drive containing Crosstalk for Windows Disk 1.

5 Follow the instructions on the screen to upgrade your software.

The Setup program asks you if you want to skip the files that
  have already been copied.

6 Answer Yes so that existing files are not overwritten.

After you install the software, you are asked if you want to
display the XTREADME.WRI file after exiting the Setup program.
This file describes the new features available in this version
and provides details about converting from previous versions. It
also includes any last-minute changes that were not addressed in
  the documentation.

5.0 Description of Disk Files

When you install Crosstalk for Windows, the following files are
copied to your Crosstalk directory.

XTALK.EXE This file runs the Crosstalk for Windows program.

*.DLL Dynamic link library files. These files provide
support functions for the main Crosstalk program
              (XTALK.EXE).

*.HLP Crosstalk for Windows on-line help files.

*.MDM Modem database files. DCAXTALK.MDM contains the
standard modem defaults. Do not change this file.

              CUSTOM.MDM contains information about customized
modem profiles. You can customize modem profiles
using the Connection dialog box from the Settings
menu. From the Connection dialog box, you choose
the Modem and Custom buttons to customize your modem
              profile.

*.PRE These files contain information about the variables
used with each connection tool (Connection,
Terminal, and File Transfer). These files are used
only if you reference variables (contained in these
              tools) from a script.

*.XWP Session profiles. These files contain the name,
telephone number, and description of the host
system, as well as the connection, terminal
emulation, and file transfer settings for the
current session. Crosstalk for Windows provides
pre-defined profiles for many popular information
              services.

*.XWK Keyboard profiles. These files contain customized
keyboard mappings that you define, such as changing
the location of characters and functions on your
              keyboard.

*.XWQ QuickPad profiles. These files contain your
customized on-screen keypads that include objects
representing your most frequently used keys, key
sequences, and scripts for communicating with hosts.

The QuickPad feature replaces the function key
features provided in versions of Crosstalk for
Windows prior to version 2.0. Crosstalk provides
QuickPads for many popular information services.
You can modify these QuickPads, or create new
              QuickPads to meet your needs.

*.XWS Script source files. Examples are provided for
              various information services.

*.XWC Executable script files. These are the compiled
versions of the source scripts. Do not modify these
              files.

XTALKCNV.EXE This program converts Procomm and Procomm Plus
commands to Crosstalk for Windows session profiles.

GI.INI This file contains important settings internal to
the program. Do not modify this file.

NORMAL.XWP This is the default session profile. This profile
contains the default settings that are used when you
              create new session profiles.

README.TXT This file. The README.TXT file contains information
you should know before you install Crosstalk for
Windows. You can view this file at the beginning of
              the installation.

XTREADME.WRI This is a Windows Write file that contains
information about this version of Crosstalk for
Windows and how it differs from previous versions.
You can view this file at the end of the
              installation.

SETUP.EXE The installation program for Crosstalk for Windows.

XTALK.INI This file contains customized settings for your
              system.

When you first install Crosstalk for Windows, the
XTALK.INI file contains default settings and will be
modified by the Setup program. We recommend that
you do not modify this file after installing
Crosstalk. Note that the Setup program will modify
your WIN.INI system file--it will not change your
              CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files.

XTALKDDE.XLM Sample Excel to Crosstalk DDE macro.

XTALKDDE.XLS Sample Excel to Crosstalk DDE spreadsheet.

The following files are copied to the Windows system directory:

*.FON Bit-mapped fonts provided for various emulations.

Crosstalk also creates the following subdirectories:

\FIL This is the default directory used for file
              transfers.

\XWP20 This directory contains pre-defined session
profiles, scripts, and QuickPads for you to use to
connect to common information services and bulletin
              boards.
