CHANGES IN RELEASE 3.1 OF PRINTCACHE
====================================
Here are the main features that have been added since version 3.0 of
PrintCache was released:
- Real-time, audible warnings for printer errors
- Voice messages and flashing icons announce printer errors in Windows
  3.1
- Windows icon can "float" to top to warn of printer errors, or to
  show when there's data in the buffer
- Windows Help system, with context-sensitive help for LaserJet 4
  errors
- Support for bidirectional I/O on LaserJet 4 provides detailed
  printer status: printer LCD display, current job name, and last
  page printed
- New "Turbo Interrupt" driver for highest performance on LaserJet 4
  and many other printers with high-speed I/O

Sound Card Conflicts
====================
If you use a sound card, there is a potential conflict that you should
be aware of. Some sound cards use interrupt 7 by default. This is
the same interrupt used by PrintCache to provide fastest printing on
LPT1. PrintCache's INSTALL program will attempt to detect and avoid
this conflict, by setting PrintCache to use a timer-based driver
(Dynamic Timer or Normal Timer). However, the best performance under
Windows in Enhanced Mode is obtained by using the Interrupt or Turbo
Interrupt driver.

To avoid this conflict and get best printing performance, you can
alter the setting on your sound card to an interrupt other than 7.
Depending on your card this can be done by changing a jumper on the
card itself, or through software. Check your sound board documentation
for instructions on changing the interrupt. After it is changed you
can run the PrintCache INSTALL program from the hard drive and change
the setting back to interrupt 7 (see Appendix A, Reinstallation, in
the PrintCache manual).

Status Readback on the LaserJet 4
=================================
Here is some additional information on how to use the status readback
capabilities of PrintCache with the LaserJet 4.

LaserJet 4 Settings
-------------------
When you run the Port Test in PrintCache's INSTALL program, it will
check your printer for status readback capability if you have
indicated that you are using a LaserJet 4. If this test fails, and
you are in fact connected to a LaserJet 4, you should check the
printer's internal settings to make sure that status readback is
enabled on the printer. To do so, first take the printer offline by
pressing the On Line button. Then press the Menu button until
PARALLEL MENU is shown on the printer's display. Then press the Item
button until you see the ADV FNCTNS= setting. It should be set to ON.
If it is not, press the "+" button until ADV FNCTNS=ON is displayed.
Then press the Enter button to accept the setting. Finally, press the
On Line button again. You may want to run the Port Test in
PrintCache's INSTALL program again to verify that status readback is
working.

Loss of Status Readback
-----------------------
It is possible to lose the status readback connection between
PrintCache and the LaserJet 4. If this happens, PrintCache will
display "(no status readback)" in the DOS pop-up or in its Windows
control panel. This will happen, for instance, if you turn the
printer off and then on again while PrintCache is running. You
needn't worry about loss of status readback. As soon as you print
again, status readback will be re-established.

Status Readback and Serial Connections
--------------------------------------
The initial release of PrintCache 3.1 does not support status readback
for printers connected to a serial port (COM1 through COM4). If you
need this feature, please call our Technical Support line at 800-767-
8005 and let them know. They will put you on a waiting list to
receive an update of PrintCache 3.1 as soon as we implement this
feature.

Initial INSTALL
===============
There were some changes made in the initial INSTALL program after the
manual was printed. Here is a list of the changes:
- You can now select the type of voice message used for Windows
  printer errors. The choices are female, male, and wacky.
- If you do not have a Windows 3.1 sound driver or sound card
  installed, and you choose to enable Windows voice warnings,
  PrintCache will install a driver for your PC speaker. See "PC-
  Speaker Driver for Windows 3.1," below, for more information.
- You now have the option to turn DOS Audible Warnings on or off. You
  are also given the option to hear the DOS warning tone so that you
  will recognize it when it is sounded.
- You will no longer get a message about "old style parallel ports"
  when running the printer port test. If you have an XT computer, and
  get a message about not being able to use interrupts, refer to
  Appendix G: PC Parallel Ports, in the PrintCache manual.

Re-INSTALL
==========
There were some changes made in the Re-INSTALL program after the
manual was printed. Here are the changes:
- "Auto" is a new Block Size option. This is the default setting. For
  disk buffers, "Auto" will set the Block Size to be twice the cluster
  size of your hard drive. This should give the best performance. For
  RAM buffers (EMS or extended memory), "Auto" will still select a 1k
  block size.
- You can now change the Block Size for RAM buffers from the Advanced
  Settings menu.

PC-Speaker Driver for Windows 3.1
=================================
The Windows 3.1 PC-Speaker Driver included with PrintCache was
licensed by LaserTools from Microsoft. This driver may not produce
high quality sound on all computer systems. The performance of the PC
Speaker driver is largely dependent upon the hardware itself. Neither
LaserTools nor Microsoft can guarantee that the speaker driver will
work with all computer systems. See SPEAKER.TXT in the
\PCACHE\SPEAKER directory for more information on this driver.

You can change the settings for this driver by choosing Drivers from
the Windows Control Panel. Highlight the "PC-Speaker Driver", then
choose Setup to modify settings, or Remove to delete the driver.

Printing to a Serial Printer under Windows
==========================================
When configuring PrintCache for a serial printer, a parallel (LPT)
Buffer Port is chosen. Windows should be set to print to the
PrintCache Buffer Port, not directly to the COM port. For example, if
your Printer Port is COM1 and the PrintCache Buffer Port is LPT2,
Windows should be set to print to LPT2.

Windows Printing System
=======================
If you wish to use PrintCache 3.1 with the Windows Printing System,
turn off Print Manager and set Fast Print Direct to Port off in the
Windows Control Panel, Printers, Connect window. This will allow
PrintCache to buffer data to the Windows Printing System. However,
PrintCache will briefly show a printer error after each Windows print
job, while the Windows Printing System resets itself to PCL mode. You
may wish to set the Audible Warning Delay to 10 seconds or more in the
PrintCache Settings dialog, so as to avoid an audible warning when the
Windows Printing System resets.

QEMM 5.11
=========
If you are running version 5.11 of the QEMM memory manager, you may
find that your PrintCache buffer becomes suspended when you exit from
Windows. If this is the case, you can avoid the problem by upgrading
to version 6.0 of QEMM, or by running the HIMEM memory manager which
comes with Windows.

DOS 5.0 EDIT
============
There is no longer a problem with popping up the PrintCache pop-up
menu over the DOS 5.0 EDIT program.

FILES INCLUDED WITH PRINTCACHE
==============================
The following files were added after the manual was printed:

AUDIO.TXT, LICENSE.TXT, OEMSETUP.INF, SPEAKER.DRV, and SPEAKER.TXT:
These are the files for the Windows 3.1 PC-Speaker driver. They can
be found in \PCACHE\SPEAKER. If you install Windows Voice Warnings,
and have no other sound driver installed, SPEAKER.DRV will be copied
to your \WINDOWS directory.

PCWIN30.HLP: This is a Windows 3.0-compatible Help file for PCWIN.
If you are not using Windows 3.0, you can delete this file from your
\PCACHE directory and from your \WINDOWS directory.

DOS Window under Windows
========================
PrintCache 3.1 does not allow you to bring up the PrintCache DOS pop-
up from a DOS window running within Windows. If you need to check
buffer status, use PCWIN, the Windows PrintCache control panel.

Disk and Memory Requirements
============================
PrintCache now needs approximately 1.2 Megabytes of disk space for
its files. When loaded with the pop-up menu and other defaults,
PrintCache will use about 17k of DOS memory and about 11k without the
pop-up menu. If installed for a LaserJet 4, the memory usage will be
about 18k and 13k respectively. Using a RAM buffer rather than a disk
buffer will reduce this figure by 3k. If you use a disk buffer,
PrintCache will automatically set its block size to twice the size of
your disk drive's allocation units. This provides optimal performance.
For a large hard drive, this could increase memory usage by 4k to 12k.
If you would like to reduce the memory PrintCache uses, you can change
the block size under Advanced Settings in the Install program.
(See Appendix A in the PrintCache manual.)

Windows Installation
====================
For highest performance with Windows 3.1, PrintCache disables the
VPD.386 line if it is found in the SYSTEM.INI file. This driver turns
on Device Contention for parallel ports (LPT1 through LPT4). If this
driver is needed, it can be put back, but will degrade performance
under Windows.

the-Fly supports all WordPerfect 5.0 and 5.1 packages including
WordPerfect for Windows. Only LaserTools' font products can support
these claims:

- It is the fastest font technology available. It is a unique
  combination of hyper-optimized font scaling code and super-
  efficient font caching makes LaserTools font products the fastest
  around, bar none.

  at least 250 point.

Printer Control Panel
---------------------
Printer Control Panel is a vital utility program for PC users who are
printing to a PostScript printer. Many PC applications do not provide
drivers for the PostScript language, and users must manually switch
their printer into HP mode in order to print from these programs.
Printer Control Panel monitors the printer port and determines what
type of output is being sent by the program, and then automatically
switches the printer into the correct mode.
