Use the Compare function after your first two backups to compare the
contents of the backup media to the source data. Also use Compare if
you have changed your hardware configuration to ensure the backup set
integrity.

Although many hardware and software configurations are tested,
testing cannot address all combinations. Performing at least two
Compares confirms that Norton Backup runs properly on your computer.

If you have problems, boot your computer from a DOS system disk
without a CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file, then check to see if the
problem occurs. Then, see the Questions and Answers section below
for a solution.

Q U E S T I O N S A N D A N S W E R S

Q: Norton Backup appears to lock-up during the backup, but it
   passed the Compatibility test.
A: Try setting compression to Off or Norton, Save Space High. These
are Advanced Program Level options. This symptom sometimes
indicates a software conflict with a memory manager since Norton
Backup uses EMS memory for compression buffers. With compression
off, Norton Backup no longer attempts to use EMS memory. In
addition, if no EMS memory was available for compression buffers,
turning compression off frees conventional memory for other Norton
   Backup functions.

Q: Why do I get the message "Diskette in drive A is defective"?
A: Norton Backup states that a floppy disk is defective if it
contains any bad sectors. Try formatting the disk from DOS to see
if all bytes are available. If the disk is not defective, this
could be a software or hardware conflict.

On rare occasions a disk drive cannot handle the Norton Backup
proprietary format. To correct this problem, try these corrective
actions in the order below. After each action, check to see if
   the problem occurs.
   1. Deselect the Proprietary Format option in the Backup To dialog
      box.
   2. Remove all TSRs and optional device drivers by booting from a
system disk with no AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS.
   3. Set Norton Backup DMA speed to low.

Q: What do the messages "Correcting Bad Disk" and "Cannot recover
data from damaged diskette using Error Correction" mean when
attempting to restore or compare a backup set.
A: There may be a software conflict. Try removing all TSRs and
optional device drivers by booting from a system disk with no
AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS, then check to see if the problem
occurs. In addition, the media may be so damaged that the error
correction code (ECC) cannot reconstruct the data.

Q: What can I do if I get the messages "Files do not match" or
   "Incorrect checksum for file"?
A: Set the Norton Backup DMA speed to low. If this does not
resolve the problem, remove all TSRs and optional device drivers
by booting from a system disk with no AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS,
then check to see if the problem still occurs.

Q: Why doesn't Norton Backup let me change any of the program
   options?
A: Press the Spacebar or use the hotkeys (highlighted letters) to
select options instead of the Enter key. This places a dot in the
selection box next to the chosen option.

Q: Is there an easy way to select/deselect all files for Backup or
Restore without going into Select Files and doing it manually?
A: With the local drive highlighted in the Backup From/Restore
Files window, press the Spacebar or click the mouse (double-click
the left button or single-click the right) to toggle between all
   files and no files.

Q: I thought I backed up my files to floppy disk, however when I look
at the floppy disk with DIR, the backed-up files do not appear on
   the screen. Where are they?
A: You cannot retrieve the files through DOS; you must use the Norton
Backup Restore function. When Norton Backup writes to a floppy
disk, it creates a component file on the disk. The component
filename is the same as the catalog filename, with the extension
that corresponds to the floppy disk sequence in the backup
set (for example, CC30404A.001 is the first floppy disk created on
April 4). The actual files are packed into the component file.
Run a Compare immediately after the backup to verify that the
   backup was successful.

Q: Why did Norton Backup require fewer floppy disks for a backup than
the program indicated it was going to need?
A: Norton Backup estimates the maximum number of disks required by
assuming no data compression. Since the level of compression
varies based on the nature of the data compressed, it would be
very time-consuming to accurately calculate the amount of disk
space saved with data compression before the backup.

Q: I told the program to back up drive D:, but it keeps backing up
   drive C:. What's wrong?
A: The DEFAULT.SET file is defined initially to back up all files on
the C: drive. The Backup From box lists drives to be backed up.
To edit the list of drives, highlight the line that indicates the
C: drive (-C- All Files or -C- Some Files). Deselect the files for
drive C: by pressing the Spacebar

Q: The Backup program doesn't seem to be accepting my Includes or
Excludes. What am I doing wrong?
A: You manually selected files or directories from the Select Files
tree. Manual selections override the Include/Exclude list.
Manually-selected directories appear in a different color from
unselected directories (usually red). To specify that you do
not want to override the Include/Exclude list with
   manually-selected files:
   1. Highlight the manually-selected directories on the Select
Files screen and press Alt+Spacebar. The Include/Exclude list
now applies to all non-manually selected directories.
   2. Make any manual selections necessary. Your manual selections
override the Includes/Exclude when there are conflicts.
   Or
   * Start over by deselecting all the files on the drive (highlight
the drive letter in the Backup From list box and press the
     Spacebar)

Q: Why would Norton Backup indicate that a restore is complete when
it did not restore any files (as shown by no check marks next to
the filenames in the top right of the Restore Progress screen) and
it only took a few seconds for the restore to finish?
A: Norton Backup is probably trying to restore older files over newer
files (for example, restoring to fix a corrupted database).
   1. Configure Norton Backup to the Advanced Restore program level.
   2. Choose Options.
   3. Choose Overwrite Files.
   4. Change this option to Always Overwrite
   Or
   * Delete the unwanted files on the hard drive first.

Q: Why is there a dot next to the filenames in the Select Files
window instead of a checkmark after selecting the files for a
   backup or restore?
A: The dot means the file has been deselected or that you have tried
to select a file for an incremental backup that has not changed
since the last Full or Incremental backup. In addition, the file
may have been deselected by a special selection statement. To
change the special selections, choose Select Files followed by
Special. You can deselect files by limiting your backup to only
files that meet the Special criteria.

Q: I'm trying to restore to a different computer and Norton Backup
says there are no catalogs found, or it tells me that the
incorrect disk has been inserted into the drive. Why would this
   happen?
A: After a backup, a catalog is created on both the backed-up hard
disk and on the last floppy disk of the backup set, or at the end
of the tape. To transfer this catalog to the new hard disk:
   1. Choose Catalog from the Restore screen.
   2. Highlight the correct catalog.
   3. Select Retrieve.
   Or
   * Copy the catalog (file with extension .FUL,.INC, .DIF or .CPY)
from the original computer into the Norton Backup directory on
     the target computer.

If you have the incorrect catalog loaded:
   1. Choose Catalog.
   2. Highlight the catalog and press the Spacebar to select it.
   3. Choose Load to make it the current catalog.

You can also restore the data without using a catalog. This is
easier and quicker than using a catalog when you want to restore a
   whole backup set.

Q: Norton Backup is not using Norton Disk Doctor to scan the disk
before backing up, even though I selected that option.
A: Norton Backup looks for the ND environment variable to find
Norton Disk Doctor. Add the following statement to your
   AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

   	SET ND=C:\NORTON

where the "C:\NORTON" with the correct path name to Norton
   Utilities on your hard disk.

Norton Backup only supports QIC 117 interface type Tape Drives using
QIC 40 or QIC 80 tapes. QIC 02 or other interface tape drives are
not supported.

Supported Tape drives are listed below:

   Colorado DJ-10 (JUMBO 120, 40MB) or DJ-20 (JUMBO 250, 80MB)
The FC-10, TC15, and TC15M high speed controller cards are
   supported.

COREtape Light QIC 80: Some Core International software versions
may not be compatible with Norton Backup. Verify that you can
restore backups made with Core International software using Norton
Backup. You may want to keep the Core International software on
your computer in case you need to restore old backups made with
   that software.

   CMS Enhancement T2120/AT:
The T2120/PS2 is not QIC117 compatible at this time. For T2120
(AT), you must change dip switch 5 at the back of the tape drive
   from OFF to ON.

Iomega Tape250 (model number IO80FI): The Iomega Model IHA10P high
speed controller card is supported. The Iomega AccuTrak read mode
is not supported by Norton Backup. Follow the manufacturer's
installation directions carefully to avoid damaging the drive.

   Irwin 40sx and 80sx

   Irwin Hornet

   Maynard ArchiveXL 5240 (XT only), 5540, 5540e, 5580, 5580e, and
3580 (PS/2): Some 5240 drives have hardware incompatibilities.
Norton Backup only supports tape drives with serial numbers
starting with BB or above. Serial numbers starting with AA
   or AB are not supported.

Mountain 4000, 8000, 4740(PS/2): This drive can be installed as a
B-drive or you can use a "third connector" cable.

   Tallgrass FS120 & FS300

Tecmar QIC 40, Tecmar QT40i: To use the Tecmar QT40i, see the
   following section on Wangtek drives.

Wangtek QIC 3040F5 & 3080F5: The jumpers are factory set for use
as a B: drive. To configure the tape drive as the third device,
change the jumper at the back of the tape drive as described in
   the manufacturer's documentation.

Wangtek documentation refers to a unique setting for using Wangtek
drives (3080F5) as a third device on Compaq machines which does not
work with Norton Backup. Use the phantom drive setting instead.

Drives not listed above are not certified for Norton Backup. In
addition, Everex describes the 60F tape drive as QIC 40 compatible,
however it is only QIC40 formatted and not QIC 117 interface
compatible.

The Zenith Supersport has a DMA bus conflict condition with Norton
Backup. Norton Backup is not certified to run on this platform.

The IBM PS/2 model 40 is not supported when using an Archive 5240
configured as drive B:.

For best performance, a minimum of 512K of RAM is recommended for
Norton Backup.

SmartCan, Erase Protect, or File Save (Norton Desktop and Norton
Utilities) place all files marked for deletion in a hidden directory
called SMARTCAN or TRASHCAN, depending on the version of SmartCan,
Erase Protect, or File Save you are using. To exclude this
directories from a backup, deselect it manually or with exclude
statements.

PC-MOS is not supported.

Desqview needs to assign 640KB for installation. Set the advanced
settings as follows:

close on exit N/A use own color YES
allow close window command NO run background NO
use math coprocessor NO keyboard conflict 0
share CPU NO share EGA foreground zoom NO
can be swapped out NO protection level 0

** Settings not mentioned are not applicable.**
See notes in the paragraph on Scheduler concerning Desqview below.

Running in different operating systems or making changes to the
operating system forces Norton Backup to reconfigure.

If you use QEMM, set DMA=32 in your CONFIG.SYS file. QEMM needs this
line to handle the way Norton Backup uses DMA channels.

With Windows, you must run Norton Backup in Full screen as the only
application running. You should also add the line "DMABufferSize=32"
in the 386ENH section of the SYSTEM.INI file. See the note about
Windows in the paragraph on Scheduler below.

With Stacker, back up the Stacker drive instead of the STACVOL.xxx
file (usually found in the root directory). If you back up just the
STACVOL.xxx file, you cannot restore a particular file from your
Stacker drive; you must restore the whole drive. If you lose or
damage one disk containing the STACVOL.xxx file, you lose all the
data from your Stacker drive.

The Viewer on the Norton Backup Select Files screen does not support
graphic files.

The NSCHED.COM TSR should be the last TSR loaded. In most cases, the
scheduler detects a TSR loaded afterwards and disables itself. The
TSR program "NSCHED.COM" always loads in high memory unless no high
memory or insufficient high memory is available. Using QEMM to load
NSCHED.COM to high memory produces an error message "cannot load
high".

If you select the Norton Backup directory for backup, not all of the
files in the directory are backed up. Some dynamic files are exempt
from the backup process; such as *.sav, *.bak, *.slt, nbackup.log,
restore.tmp, backup.tmp and compare.tmp. These files do not need to
be backed up, because they are temporary files that change during the
backup and restore processes.

Norton Backup sets the DMA speed to low if you cancel the
compatibility test. Skipping the compatibility test leaves DMA speed
set to high.

Macros are only supported in the backup portion of Norton Backup.
Macros are not supported for the pull down menus. Do not use a macro
to load a setup file or for file selection; the results are
unpredictable.

A backup made from a floppy disk drive using the DOS path feature,
can only be restored through using the DOS path feature.

The Scheduler cannot schedule an event on the last day of the month
because there are 28 day, 29 day, 30 day, and 31 day months. To
schedule regular monthly backups, schedule them for the 1st day of
the month. The following programs disable the Scheduler: Paradox
3.5, Borland C++ 2.0, WordPerfect Office, and DOS PRINT. When
running Windows or Desqview, the Scheduler waits until you exit
that environment before making a backup.

Norton Backup does not back up the Norton Antivirus NAV_.SYS and
NAV&.SYS files because Norton Antivirus protects them. To address
this situation, use one of the following two methods:

   * Add NAV_.SYS and NAV&.SYS to the Copy Protected Files list in
the Special box in the Select Files screen. Then, Norton Backup
will not attempt to back up these files. If you need to
restore them, you can do so from the original Norton AntiVirus
disks. With this method, you can make unattended backups with
     Norton AntiVirus active.

  * Temporarily disable Norton AntiVirus by rebooting the computer, then
pressing and holding down the two SHIFT keys after you hear the
first beep. A message appears stating that Norton AntiVirus has
not been loaded. Release the keys and make your backup. Reboot
again to reactivate Norton AntiVirus. With this method, your
backup contains all of the Norton AntiVirus files selected for
    backup.

The NAV.SYS contained in versions of Norton AntiVirus before 2.0 is
not compatible with NSCHED. If NSHED interrupts the warning dialog
box of Norton AntiVirus 1.5 or earlier, you must reboot.

Ideally, you can back up 2046 directories and 65,535 files per drive,
but the maximum number of directories and files depends on the system
memory available for drive logging. If there is insufficient memory,
Norton Backup allocates 32KB for 1020 directories.

If Norton Backup cannot log a drive because it contains too many
directories or too many files in a single directory, you can work
around this problem as described below.

If the drive is a local drive (as opposed to a network drive), use
the DOS SUBST command to map the directory you want to back up to a
new drive letter. For example, to substitute the drive letter F: for
the directory E:\SOFTWARE\DOS, type:

	  SUBST F: E:\SOFTWARE\DOS

If the large drive is a Novell Netware file server, use the MAP
command with the ROOT option to map a drive letter to a subdirectory
on the volume. For example, to map the drive letter G: to a network
directory called SERVERA\VOLUME1\PATHNAME, type:

          MAP ROOT G:=SERVERA\VOLUME1:\PATHNAME

Each tape volume table can hold 256 entries, so Norton Backup can
save 256 backup sets to a single tape, if the save catalog to tape
option is turned off. With the save catalog to tape option on, the
maximum number of backup sets to a single tape is 128.
