                     SPECTRE PC RELEASE NOTES
                     ------------------------

Thank you for buying Spectre. This file contains any last minute
additions or corrections to the Spectre documentation. Please
read through this file before calling technical support. It may
save you the time and expense of a call. Also, be sure to check
the "Troubleshooting" section of the Spectre manual.

GENERAL
-------
If you are having trouble, we can not stress enough the value of
starting your computer with a "CLEAN DOS BOOT DISK". This is a
DOS system disk with no extra features added in the AUTOEXEC.BAT
or CONFIG.SYS files. Please refer to page 38 of the Spectre
manual for more information.

- SOUND DRIVERS: In rare instances, some network configurations
may disrupt the AdLib or SoundBlaster sound effects on slower
machines. If you hear a problem, you can switch to PC sounds.
If you prefer to stay with the AdLib or SoundBlaster effects,
feel free. These intermittent strange sounds should not affect
  the game.

- VIRUS CHECKERS: If you have a memory resident virus checker, and
it appears or beeps during Spectre, we strongly recommend
disabling it. Spectre's installation process is very secure.
If any of the Spectre files were damaged or infected, the
decompression process would not work, and Spectre would not
  install in the first place.

- FILE INTEGRITY TEST: The file test will check your Spectre files
to be sure they are not damaged or missing. If you run the test
on the original disk, the compressed archive will be tested. To
test the decompressed, installed files, you will need to copy
INSTALL.EXE and INSTALL.DAT to the SPECTRE directory on your
hard disk, and then run INSTALL.

NETWORK AND MODEM PLAY
----------------------

- When playing over a network, we strongly suggest having the player
with the fastest computer log into the network first. The first
player to log into the game becomes the "game master" and his
computer is responsible for sending certain information to the
other players on the network. Having the fastest machine be the
"game master" will make the network scenarios start faster.

- FAST MODEMS: If you have one of the newer high-speed modems (9600
baud or faster), you may find it easier to place a modem call
rather than answer one. Some high-speed modems may not correctly
slow-down to the speed of an incoming caller, or they may
incorrectly assume that the incoming caller has data-compression.
For best results, the slowest modem should receive calls.

If you are connecting to another high-speed modem, and you both
have data compression, you may need to turn the compression off.
These modems will buffer up data before sending it to the PC.
Spectre needs IMMEDIATE information on where your opponent's tank
is. If your modems buffer this data, it will come in too late
  to be of use.

- SLOW MACHINES: If you are running on a 80286/20 or slower, and
Spectre won't run or acts strange in network play, you should
be sure the line STACKS=9,256 appears in your CONFIG.SYS
file. Slow machines can not always process network interrupts
fast enough. Increasing the amount of DOS stacks may help.
This should cure any "Out of Stack Space" error messages you
  may receive.

WINDOWS USERS
-------------
Please run Spectre in DOS several times before attempting to run
it under Windows. Windows uses system resources which may
prevent Spectre from running properly on some machines. The
Windows interface is simply provided as a convienence.

- DMA BUFFER TOO SMALL ERROR: Some systems may print a DMA buffer
error when trying to use the SoundBlaster from Windows. Follow
the error message instructions and add DMABUFFERSIZE=021 in the
  [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI.

- If you can't run network play from Windows, you will need to
exit to DOS for Net Play. Windows may simply use up too much
processor time and not allow Spectre to run properly with the
  added overhead of networking.

                Thanks again for buying Spectre!
