% In this lesson you'll learn how to connect to the Internet. Once you're connected, you'll begin to explore the Internet and the World Wide Web.


Click the Next button, above, to continue. %~% This lesson shows you how to connect to the Internet via a modem and through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). You must have a modem properly installed and configured to perform the steps in this lesson.
Tip! %~% The first step in connecting to the Internet is choosing an ISP. Double-click the Online Services folder on your desktop to view icons for several ISPs.

Show Me %~% The sign up process varies, depending on the ISP.

At this time, if you want to complete the sign up process, double-click the About The Onlines Services icon or the icon corresponding to the ISP in which you are interested. Your area may have other ISPs which are not included in the Online Services folder.
Tip! %~% Click the Close button on the title bar of the Online Services window.

Show Me %~% To complete the rest of the steps in this lesson, you must be connected to the Internet.

Once you've established an online connection, double-click the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop.

Show Me %~% In the Internet Explorer window, click the Address box on the Address toolbar, type www.microsoft.com/ and press the ENTER key. Note that the Microsoft Corporation home page opens.
Tip!

Show Me %~% In the Internet Explorer window, click the Internet Explorer News button on the Links toolbar.

If you do not see the Internet Explorer News button on the Links toolbar, click Links on the Links toolbar, and drag the Links toolbar directly beneath the Address toolbar. The Links toolbar now appears below the Address toolbar.
Tip!

Show Me %~% The Internet Explorer News Web site opens with the latest information about your Web browser. %~% To return to the previous Web page, click the Back button on the toolbar in the Internet Explorer window. To return to the Web site you just visited, Internet Explorer News, click the Forward button on the toolbar.

Show Me %~% To view the content on a different site, click Best of the Web on the Links toolbar.

A Web page with links to recommended Web sites appears.

Show Me %~% Move your mouse pointer over some of the images and text in Best of the Web. Your mouse pointer turns into a hand when it passes over a hyperlink. Click one of the text links.

You may need to scroll down the page to view the links.

Show Me %~% To return to your Internet start page, click the Home button on the Standard toolbar.
Tip!

Show Me %~% To close Internet Explorer, click the Close button on the title bar of the window. If your ISP prompts you to disconnect from the Internet, click Yes.
