How To Play

In Hover, you race against computer-controlled opponents over a desert racecourse. When you initially run Hover, you are presented with a demo race -- press any key to begin play.

You and your opponents pilot futuristic hovercrafts. These vehicles are agile, virtually indestructable, and ideally suited to the terrain of the course. The keyboard controls for your craft are below:

Left hand mAccelerate
comma / < Roll left
period / > Roll right

Right hand arrow keysTurn and pitch

Other keys cAdjust camera
F1View video options
ESCQuit current race and restart demo race
F12Exit Hover

Alternate left hand * vAccelerate
bRoll left
nRoll right
* Alternate controls are provided because certain key combinations do not register properly with some keyboards. If you find, for example, that you cannot turn left and roll left at the same time, try the alternate left hand controls.

The Game Screen

During the race, various information is overlayed on the screen:
  • Your current rank among the 7 other racers is displayed at upper-left.
  • Your elapsed race time is displayed at upper-right. A series of white dots indicate your current lap (out of 3 total).
  • The course map is displayed at lower-right. An arrow indicates your position, and white dots indicate the positions of other racers. Red and yellow dots designate the recommended route -- always head towards yellow dots and away from red dots.

Racing Tips
  • Watch the map at the bottom-right of the screen, and always head towards yellow dots.
  • Adjust your craft's roll (comma / < and period / > ) and pitch (arrow up and down) to land jumps smoothly. Over normal terrain, your craft automatically maintains an optimal, "nose-down" pitch.
  • You can adjust the camera (c) for a lower or higher view.

Troubleshooting

If you have any problem running Hover, or the game doesn't look correct, it is probably due to an incompatibility with your video card.

In some cases these problems can be resolved through the Video Options dialog box. Press F1 to access this while the game is running. Checking Render simpler vehicle shadows may correct problems with older video cards. You might also try selecting a different video mode, such as 640x480x32 instead of the default 640x480x16.
