HOW TO INSTALL ALL ADI-JUNIOR DISKS & APPLICATIONS ON A HARD DRIVE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Typed by: >>>>> Eek-a-Mouse <<<<< ~~~~~~~~~~~ Despite the manual saying you can only install on a hard drive if you have a PC, here's how to put it on an Amiga HD: Make a directory called ADIJNR in a hard drive partition. Go on, you might as well give it an icon at the same time, I suppose. Copy all files from the ENVIRONMENT disk (E1) and any application disks you have to this directory. Copy all the files from any application disks you have to the same directory. Write the following script file in a text-editor: Assign ADIJNR: (your partition):ADIJNR ADIJNR:kid lg_gb Save the file out as 'Start', and stick it in the same directory as the other ADI stuff. Find the file 'Start' you've just written with DirOpus etc, and make it a script file (use Opus - 'Protect' then 'script'; the shell, or another equivalent). Add an icon to 'Start' and make sure the default tool is set to 'Sys:c/IconX'. Save it, and you're nearly ready to go....open your partition and click on the icons. If the prgram isn't cracked you'll need to enter the correct codes from one of the booklets. I have typed these things out (see below - or in the other files, if this text has been split up by the docs disk chappies). Note: ADI Junior reading 6-7 wasn't cracked properly by LSD - only the first protection check was disabled. When using the reading Applications, you had to guess the code - and there's lots of 'em!!). On the main House screen you can click on most bits of the picture. Some of these play set animations and others open up an activity. These are easy for most young children to understand, especially if an adult helps them through things the first time around, so I won't bother to type out the manual for this screen. When your child wants to get on with the serious stuff, click on the door of the house to access the Applications. You must have the relevant reading or counting application disks to get any further. I have typed out the docs for these Applications (see below - or in the other files, if this text has been split up by the docs disk chappies). The first time you are asked to insert any 'user disk' or 'new disk' (ie, any Application disk), you'll actually have to stuff the relevant floppy into DF0:, then hit return. When you quit, it remembers which application disks you have, so next time you won't have to bother shoving in the floppies; press return then click on the relevant box and it will find them on your HD ('cos you copied ALL files to the ADIJNR dir, didn't you??!!). You must use the first Application disk in a series before using the second (ie, you must use disk R6 [for jnr reading 6-7 years] and wait for the prompt to insert disk R62 [a bit later]. As I said, once you've bunged in a floppy and quit, you can throw the disk away, as it will look an your HD from then on.... If you want to check your progress, ahmmmm..I mean your kids progress, press F10 at any time on the House screen to get a summary of how they're doing - you can click on each status line to get more detail and confirm they're as thick as you thought they were! If you press F10 when in an application, you'll get some instructions/explanations for the bit you're looking at. That's all I can be bothered with for now - I'm off to my pit. Have fun with your new toy. These are: speaking and listening, reading, writing, spelling and handwriting. Of all these targets, reading is the one which most people regard as fundamental. If children cannot read they cannot write or spell, because they have no knowledge of the written word or the letters making these words. The more children practise their reading and the more fluent they become, the easier all the other components of the National Curriculum in English will be. When working on written English, children will be able to concentrate much better on producing good written work if they can read and spell words fluently. If they work with adults and discuss their work with them, they will develop their speaking and listening skills, and then use these to improve their vocabulary and written English. The following table shows how Reading with ADI Junior relates to the National Curriculum in English: ATTAINMENT TARGET LEVELS 1 2 3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AT1 Speaking and Listening X x x AT2 Reading X x x AT3 Writing X x x AT4 Spelling X x x X - aspects of the ATs which are covered by Reading with ADI Junior 6/7. x - aspects of the ATs which are only partially covered by Reading with ADI Junior 6/7. JIGSAW WORDS: (click on apple on left) Parts of the word appear under the pictures. The child must make the word from the parts at the bottom of the screen. This develops reading and spelling skills through observation. Click on the part of the word and match it to the picture by placing it in the boxes. If you make a mistake click on it again and move it. When all the words are completed click on the Thumbs-Up icon and ADI Junior will check the words. PICTURES IN ORDER: (click on apple on right) Pictures appear and the child must create a logical story. This uses observation, logic and judgement to develop reading and comprehension skills. Level 1: Click on the next picture, at the bottom, which should continue the story started by the first picture. Level 2: You must decide which picture starts the story and then continue the story. If you make a mistake click on the picture again to return it to the bottom. Level 3: You must make a story that matches the picture by clicking on the appropriate phrase. If you make a mistake click on the phrase on the page. Click on the Thumbs-Up icon and ADI Junior will check the story. TRUE OR FALSE: (click on the bird) Decide whether the picture of phrase is true or false. This develops observation, logic and judgement. Look at the picture, if one is shown, and read the phrase. If it is true click on the true robot. If not click on the false robot. SOUNDS AND PLACES: (click on bridge) Different scenes are displayed and a question posed. This develops listening skills and also helps with reading and understanding. Levels 1 & 2: Click on the scene that the object or word shown at the bottom would be most likely to make a sound. Level 3: Click on the scene that answers the riddle. LEARNING WORD SOUNDS: (click on blue chimney pipe) Boxes appear with groups of letters in them. This teaches children to recognise common letter groups, and also develops reading and spelling skills. Click on the box at the bottom that contains the letter or groups of letters that can be heard in the word sound shown in the top box. THE MATCHING GAME: (click on red chimney) A memory game. Children use observation, memory and judgement to develop reading and spelling skills. Click on a card and a picture or word will be displayed. This must be matched to another card. They must all be matched up within the time limit shown by the burning candle. SYLLABLES AND WORDS (click on cloud) Words have been cut up and the child must restore them. This teaches children to recognise common letter groups. Click on the part of the word and match it to the picture by placing it in the boxes. If you make a mistake click on it again and move it. When all the words are completed, click on the thumbs-up icon and ADI Junior will check the words. THE ODD ONE OUT (click on door of white house) The child has to decide whether the phrase or picture does not belong. This uses observation, memory and judgement. It will also develop reading with understanding. Levels 1 & 2: Click on the picture that does not belong Level 3: Read the sentence and decide which phrase does not match. FIND THE ANIMAL'S HOME (click on door of blue house) A game of memory. Children use observation, memory and judgement to develop reading and spelling skills. Click on a card and a picture or word will be displayed. An animal must match to its home or vice-versa. They must all be matched by the time limit shown by the burning candle. WORD SHAPES (click on hay cart) Pictures and words of objects are displayed. This helps extend the child's vocabulary. Click on the picture of the object that matches the word that is shown in the green box. FIND THE MISSING ANIMALS (click on lilly pad) A picture of animals is shown and some will disappear. Uses observation, logic and judgement to develop reading skills. Watch the picture and remember which animals disappear. Click on the word or picture of the animals that have disappeared. CLick on the thumbs-up icon and ADI Junior will check the animals. THE HAPPY AND SAD GAME (click on pig) Pictures or sentences are shown and a decision has to be made as to whether it is a happy or sad picture. Children use observation and judgement to develop reading with understanding. Click on the laughing robot if the picture or sentence is happy or click on the crying robot if not. ANIMAL NAMES (click on cartwheel) Pictures of animals are shown along with the name of one of the animals. Teaches children essential reading and spelling skills. Click on the animal that is named.
